CALCULATIONS

Basal Heave Analysis in Cohessionless Soils The height of excavation H = 1.225 m

Fs = 2Nγ2 x (ɣ2/ɣ1 ) x Ka x tanΦ1 for Φ1 = 30 (take the lowest friction angle)

0.523599
where Nγ2 = bearing capacity factor at the soils underneath for Φ2 = 30 (CDG)

Cases:
1 If Groundwater is at a depth of B or more below the base
ɣ1 and ɣ2 are taken as moist unit Weights

2 If Groundwater is static at base of cut

ɣ1 = Moist Weight, ɣ2 = Submerged Weight

3 If seepage is moving upward to the base of cut

ɣ2 = ( Saturated Unit Weight ) - ( Uplift Pressure )

Analysis Cases (1, 2 or 3): 3

If Analysis Case is the third one, Uplift Pressure = 167.7 kPa (from seep/w analysis)
The increase in pore pressure ΔP = 50.97 kPa
The hydraulic gradient i = 0.43

Assume Groundwater is static at base of cut

ɣ1' = 9.19 kN/m3

ɣ2' = Ƴ2 - Ƴw x (1+i) = 4.97 kN/m3

Adopt Figure A2 from GeoGuide 1

Bearing Capacity Factor:

Nc2 = ( Nq - 1 ) cot Φ2
Nγ2 = 2 ( Nq + 1 ) tan Φ2
Nq2 = exp ( π tan Φ2 ) ( tan ( π/4 + Φ2/2 ) ) ^2

For Φ2 = 30

Nq2 = exp ( π tan Φ2 ) ( tan ( π/4 + Φ2/2 ) ) ^2

= 18.40

Nγ2 = 2 (Nq + 1) tan Φ2

= 22.40

So, The factor of Safety Fs

= 2 x 22.4 x ( 4.9717 / 9.19 ) x (1 + sin 30 ) / ( 1 - sin 30 ) x tan 30
= 4.66 > 1.5, OK!
