TAIL STRIKE INDICATION PRESENTATION


GENERAL
The Tail Strike Indication (TSI) indicates a rear fuselage ground contact during
take−off or landing to the flight and maintenance crew through the ECAM.
This system prevents the crew from continuing the flight and ensures proper
maintenance action after a Tail Strike occurs.

BITE Test
The Flight Warning System (FWS) observe the discrete inputs from the Tail-
Strike Indicator (TSI) permanently (Monitoring test).
In case of a TSI detection the System Data Acquisition Concentrator (SDAC)
stores it as Built−in Test Equipment (BITE) data in an Electrically−Erasable
Programmable Read−only Memories (EEPROM).
The FWS reports the BITE data to the Onboard Maintenance System (OMS).

DETECTION AND WARNING IN FLIGHT


The TSI consists of two frangible wires mounted in an antenna shaped hous-
ing. They act as detection circuits in case of rear fuselage chafes or loads on
the ground during take−off or landing.
Each wire transmits a ground discrete signal to both System Data Acquisition
Concentrators (SDACs).
The SDACs send the TSI condition via an ARINC 429 data bus to the Flight
Warning Computers (FWCs). FWC 1 & 2 process SDACs data as ”ground” to
indicate the normal system configuration and ”open” circuits as a Tail Strike.
When one or two discrete signals change their status from ”ground” to ”open”
during take−off or landing phases, a level 2 amber caution is generated by the
FWC during flight phases 5, 6 and 9.
In addition, the message ”STRUCT. TAIL STRIKE’’ is displayed on the EWD
warning area and a ’’LAND ASAP’’ message is also displayed on the EWD
memo part.

DETECTION AND WARNING ON GROUND


When one or two discrete signals change their status from ”ground” to ”open”
during flight phases 1, 2 and 10 (different from take−off or landing phases) it is
assumed that it is not a tail strike.
In this case, a level 1 amber alert is generated by the FWC : ”STRUCT. TAIL
STRIKE DET FAULT” is displayed on the EWD.
In addition the message ”TAIL STRK DET” is displayed on the INOP SYS part
of the SD status page.
In this case, FWC 1 generates the appropriate message to the Central Mainte-
nance System (CMS).
