About the Course
Since men and women are biologically different it is believed that they have different capabilities needs
and desires. Accordingly, society has attributed the gender roles, what is expected, allowed and valued in
women and men in a given situation. Society perceived women as biologically and physically weaker
sect. Right from the brought up in the family, girls are treated inferior to boys. While girls are groomed to
be tender and submissive, boys are taught to be bold, tough and dominating. This sociological
conditioning has resulted in discrimination, violence and other negative consequences for both the sexes.
Hence, it is important to understand and develop sensitivity towards gender issues. This course is
designed to give an overall understanding of gender issues from socio-cultural-political and economic
perspective.
Who can attend this course?
An understanding of women issues is important to both men and women to appreciate the role and contribution of
women in the realization of their rights and to foster active participation of women in the process of development.
The learners aspiring to undergo the course should fulfil the following prerequisites -
· Learners should possess minimum Intermediate or Plus 2 qualifications
· All the learners should have access to good Internet connectivity, Laptop or smart phone or Desktop or
other digital device
Learning Outcomes
'Gender Sensitization' course aims at reducing the gender gap prevalent in the society. Upon completion, participants
will be able to –
· Distinguish the concepts of sex and gender. Participants will be acquainted with the changing role of
women through the ages and the impact of tradition and culture in defining gender roles.
· Define Socialization and explain the process of bringing up of boys and girls according to the cultural
norms of the society.Examine the influence of gender stereotypes and different agents of socialization.
· Understand the issues relating to gendered division of labour and discrimination in employment in
organized and unorganized sectors.
· Discuss Gender and power relations andexamine Patriarchal power in family, Personal and corporate
power, Struggles of women for political representation from gender perspective.
· Analyse the various forms of violence with the help of case studies explain and the legal and constitutional
provisions to deal with such violence.
· Discuss gender equality in education, employment, property issues and health. Examine the concept of
heterogeneity and discuss the problems faced by Dalit Women, Tribal women, Minority women because of
their caste and class identities.
· Examine the various conventions on human rights, special provisions of CEDAW, CERD, Human Rights
and the Indian Constitution
· Discuss various gender related issues and challenges in the contemporary world.
Course Syllabus Course Format
The course consists of eight modules spread over eight weeks. Course is developed in four quadrants. Every week students will be expected to view 5 video lectures
which are about 15 - 20 minutes each and read the Self Learning Materials. Every week students can
