NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATION ARRANGEMENTS

1. To attain the National Qualification of MASONRY NC II, the candidate must


demonstrate competence in all the units listed below. Successful candidate shall be
awarded a National Certificate signed by the TESDA Director General.

2. Assessment shall focus on the core units of competency. The basic and common
units are assessed concurrently with the core units.

3. The following are qualified to apply for assessment and certification:

 Graduates of formal, non-formal and informal including enterprise-based


training programs
 Experienced Workers (wage employed or self-employed)

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE COMPETENCY ASSESSOR

1. Group the candidate by two’s. Each candidate shall be rated individually


2. Prepare tools and materials to perform masonry works. Instruct the candidates
to perform the following tasks within six (6) hours.

A. CHB Laying – 3 ½ Hours


 Layout and install guide post
 Cut, bend and install RSB (10mm dia.)
 Mix mortar
 Lay 5 layers of CHB x 3m. span

B. Plastering – 2 ½ hours
 Layout plaster thickness
 Mix mortar
 Plaster wall surface (1 m x 3 m)

3. Assessment shall be based on the units of competency in the Training


Regulations and Evidence Plan and shall focus on the evidence
gathering method below:

 Observation / demonstration with oral questioning

4. Final assessment shall be your responsibility as Accredited Assessor

5. At the end of the assessment, you shall provide the candidate feedback on
the assessment results. The feedback shall indicate whether the candidate is:

 COMPETENT
 NOT YET COMPETENT

ANSWER: Ask your supervisor for a working platform to be installed. If none, you
must erect one
16. What would you do if you found out that the concrete block used in
wall construction is defective?
ANSWER: Sort, separate and report for replacement. Proceed to work with
acceptable materials
17. Name some of the common PPE used before getting started to work?
ANSWER: Safety shoes, helmet and body harness
18. What fall protection system aside from scaffolds are
used? ANSWER: Ladder, Guardrails and Safety Harness
19. What would you do if an accident occurred in your work area?
ANSWER: Administer first aid then report immediately to your supervisor.
20. How are heavy materials and hand tools brought above ground or on a
higher level?
ANSWER: By using a chain block, crane or rope and pulley

21. What would you do if the mortar bedding has initially set before laying CHB?
ANSWER: Remove and replace with a freshly-mixed mortar
22. When can you say that a constructed wall is acceptable?
ANSWER: Plumbness of 1mm / meter height
23. What is the standard gap or measurement between blocks being laid?
ANSWER: 10 mm
24. What would you do if the area to be plastered is uneven?
ANSWER: When the difference between the highest and lowest points is less than half
the plaster thickness, use plumb guide and take the highest point as the
reference to measure plaster thickness. However, if the difference is greater,
grind the highest point until the required difference is attained.
25. What would you do if the scaffolding you were using is short of height in line
with job requirement?
ANSWER: Do not use. Look for a longer size to fit the height.
26. What would you do next after plastering concrete or masonry
surface? ANSWER: Perform curing
27. How frequent do you carry-out water curing?
ANSWER: Depending on the weather condition, If surface is dry, spray
water intermittently
28. When mixing mortar with the one-bagger mechanical mixer, what is the
main reason why water is always placed to the mixer first.

ANSWER: to attain the proper workability of the mix


29. What are the different types of joint finishes used in block laying?
ANSWER:
 v-joint
 concave joint
 flush joint
30. What should be done first before establishing horizontal guide prior to
CHB laying?
ANSWER: Measure the actual height of blocks to determine the spacing between layers

The quantity of tools and equipment to be used for the conduct of assessment for this
Qualification shall depend on the number of candidates. The most important consideration
is to make sure that tools and equipment are adequately provided to all candidates when
needed.
