CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

There are words that are considered inappropriate and that people use to express

their feelings such as anger, loneliness and disappointment that are known as swear

words. People considered that swear words are bad or dirty terms, which is inappropriate

and should not be used in conversation. Swear words gradually creep into our

vocabulary without knowing until they become a natural response in a range of

circumstances. Using swear words is common in society, yet the impact of such

language choices on other people's perceptions is poorly understood (DeFrank 2018).

According to Finn (2017), understanding why people swear is important for

students in order to better understand the context and respond appropriately. People do

not use swear words to insult, hurt and put someone’s down but can be used for a variety

of positive causes and purposes. However, nowadays, swearing appears to be

increasingly acceptable and widespread in our society.

Swearing can give the image of a negative attitude or immaturity, as well as

signify a lack of control. It happens when people are experiencing a strong emotion or

when people desire to achieve a certain purpose by swearing.

Using foul language creates problems if people do not understand the meaning and

functions why people are uttering these words.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

2

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

According to Tuttle (2018), when movies utilize foul words, they risk alienating

viewers who might otherwise see the film; this is especially true of comedies and real

life situations. Hence, the researchers chose “Tililing”, another blockbuster movie from a

beginner director Daryl Yap and all the great casts of VinCentiments where intense

swear words and scenes are used in the movie employed by the characters.

Therefore, the researchers analyzed the swear words in one of the underrated

films of VinCentiments in 2021, Tililing, in relation to the theoretical framework, Steven

Pinker’s (2007) functions of swearing.

Background of the Study

Swearing in the media has become more common than ever before, and this

normalcy has become a public concern because people are concerned that swearing can

lead to moral deterioration. Since the early nineteenth century, this language has been

more common and loud than at any other time up to now (Nunberg 2012).

Day (2018) stated that swear words are all throughout media – television, social

media and music in recent years. These words seem to be inevitable. Swear words can

now be found almost anywhere on the internet and are unfiltered, making these words

lose their head-turning value. In the movies that people watch every day, people usually

hear swear words employed by the characters.

Tililing is claimed by its director Daryl Yap as “genre-bending movie of the year”

starring Baron Geisler, Gina Pareño, Chad Kinis, Donnalyn Bartolome, Candy

Pangilinan, and Yumi Lacsamana, follows three interns, Maricel (Pangilinan), Espie

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

3

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

(Bartolome), and Jessa (Lacsamana), who are assigned to an asylum. Interns

encountered three patients there: Socorro (Pareño), a comfort woman; Peter (Geisler),

an orphan; and Bernie (Chad Kinis), an arsonist, all of whom had heartbreaking stories

to tell. Together, attempting to escape before the patients kill the interns.

The main characters used swear word variations, which is a beneficial factor for

the researchers to obtain data from the movie. The fact that the “Tililing” movie

contains bad language, which triggered a lot of critiques for the explicit swearing

displayed, did not stop “Tililing '' and many more movies of VinCentiments in the

continuous successions of their movies.

Tililing was ranked number two in Vivamax films by Popularity Ascending in

2021, and ranked number four in this year 2022. We The Pvblic snagged an interview

with the phenomenon to talk more about VinCentiments, its humble beginnings and the

secrets of filmmaking success. The interviewee started with the question about what is

the top secret of VinCentiments’ successful films. The question was answered directly

by the director and says; their films are true to life situations, no one funds them so

therefore they are not tied. Daryl Yap also added that they cannot be tamed and can

handle “bastos”, their films are raw, uncensored and hard-hitting.

VinCentiments has become a legitimate hit among people due to its daring and

funny take on all-too-relatable themes of their works. This is mainly due to the genius of

its screenplays, which were written by director Darryl Yap. VinCentiments films are

rated SPG (clearly not for children) and the fact that all of the characters swear and use

offensive language, still the majority of the viewers are from minors. Also, despite the

fact that this film contained filthy and lewd content, nevertheless still entertaining and

appealing to viewers.

By exploring “Tililing” movie scripts as the object of the study, the current

researchers attempted to identify various aspects related to the use of offensive language,

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

4

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

which is swearing. The main reason for choosing this film was because the characters

utilized a lot of intense swear words in the characters’ interactions. VinCentiments is hot

trending and popular nowadays whether they release a film or just a short clip of series.

Moreover, Daryl Yap is part of the modern Philippine film industry as part as well

of the new generation to create such films that became popular quickly. In addition,

VinCentiments has a large circle of influence on all social media platforms such as

facebook, instagram and youtube, which are beneficial to researchers in obtaining datas.

Another reason was that Tililing is the first film of VinCentiments that deals

with mental illness, in exaggerated depictions of persons with tililing – meaning people

thought 'crazy,' and was blasted by famous celebrities, the Twitterverse, and even media

publications Pereña (2021).

Furthermore, the intriguing film immediately attracted the interest of viewers, as

the trailer received over one million views in less than 24 hours after being shared on

VinCentiments’ official Facebook page on Wednesday, February 10th, amid controversy

the film has faced over its poster. A lot of backlashes and criticisms appeared in the

comment sections about the depiction of the posted poster in all VinCentiments’ social

media platforms.

The opposition claims that it portrays people with mental illnesses as outright

lunatics, but Yap is adamant about the art of the film, as Yap has been in the past when

faced with controversy (Lasin 2021). When accused of disrespecting persons with

mental illnesses, the up-and-coming filmmaker took no offense and instead told its

critics that the poster would surprise viewers.

Objectives of the Study

This study is sought to:

1. Identify the swear words used by the main characters found in the movie “Tililing”.

2. Determine the functions of swearing uttered by the main character found in the

movie “Tililing” in terms of:

a) Dysphemistic swearing

b) Abusive swearing

c) Idiomatic swearing

d) Emphatic swearing

e) Cathartic swearing

3. Identify the motives or intentions of swearing uttered by the main characters.

4. To know the opinions of viewers regarding the use of swearing and swear words in

VinCentiments’ movie Tililing.

Significance of the Research

This research is expected to give knowledge about swearing to the readers in

general and increase their awareness that swearing does not only exist in real life daily

conversation but also has its functions and motives or intentions, in order to understand

the use of offensive language.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

6

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

As a result of performing this research, the findings provide readers with an

overview of swearing in motion pictures, which is said to be contentious in the country.

In addition, audiences of the right age are asked to view the film not only from an

artistic perspective, but also from a cultural and linguistic perspective.

To MTRCB – Although the Philippine Film Industry’s censorship board has continued

to allow "Tililing" and other VinCentiments’ films, this does not necessarily imply

that these are completely accepted in the field due to their censored themes or

notions. The MTRCB (Movie and Television Review and Classification Board)

is a quasi-judicial governmental organization under the Office of the President

responsible for reviewing and classifying television shows, films and promotional

materials. It has been institutionalized as a tool for censorship. This research can

serve as a basis and guide for the MTRCB to rank more films and limit audience

age when watching extremely censored films.

Filmmakers and Future Media Practitioners – Cursing appear to be increasingly

acceptable and widespread in our society. Therefore, this study is to raise

filmmakers' awareness as well as the Future Media Practitioners of specific

expressions in their regular contents that may be offensive or unpleasant to others in

viewing language censored films. The filmmakers and future media practitioners

will get new understanding about swear words as a result of this study,

particularly regarding the functions and motives of swearing. Furthermore,

filmmakers and future media practitioners must be aware of the responsibility in

selecting appropriate content for the appropriate audience.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

7

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

DLL Students – The research findings are useful in academic settings because it

provides a practical model for applying theory on swearing as a linguistic

phenomenon in terms of language propriety in terms of swearing functions. To be more

specific, the three objectives results provide information about swear words used by

the main characters in the movie, while the last objective's results provide a code for

analyzing swearing opinions. Furthermore, the results show how content analysis

and thematic analysis can be used to investigate swearing as a taboo language act.

Future Researchers – The research findings are beneficial in university contexts

because it provides a practical model of the application of theory on swearing to propriety

of language in terms of functions and motives. The findings also show how the content

analysis is utilized as an approach to investigate swearing as a bad

related to language. The future researchers who are interested in

words can gather information about swearing from this research and can be used as a

valuable reference in investigating the same subject. The future researchers can also

compare this study with their study in analyzing swear words.

Scope and Limitations

This study is to focus on determining the functions of swearing, motives or

intentions of swearing and viewers’s opinion about swearing in the movie “Tililing” of

VinCentiments directed by Daryl Yap.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

8

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

This study is limited only to Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Lucena English Major

Students during the Academic Year 2021-2022, starting in the first semester of

September 2021, until the end of the semester. Due to global pandemic, this study is

analyzed and the information needed are gathered using mainly the internet.

The researchers evaluated the frequency of usage of the swear words found in the

movie, based on the functions of swearing and the motives or intentions were discussed

using the result of the percentage. Six (6) participants ranging from 18 to 25 years old

from English Major Students were the subject of this study for Focus Group Discussion.

Definition of Terms

Dysphemism or dysphemistic – It is replacing a pleasant or harmless expression with

an unpleasant, insulting or offensive expression. In this study, dysphemism or

dysphemistic is used when the characters uttered swear words that does not

aimed at a certain person rather meant to describe a certain state or subject matter.

Abusive – Abusive is commonly defined as engaging in by cruelty and violence or

exteremely insulting and offensive. In this study, abusive is utilized when the

characters uttered swearing that aimed to offend or attack a person directly that

really meant what they said.

Idiomatic – It contains or denotes expressions that sounds natural to a native speaker. In

this study, Idiomatic expression is used when the characters uttered swear words

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

9

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

that does not aimed to offend someone or describe a certain state but rather to

express and grab listener’s attention to communicate in an informal setting.

Emphatic – Emphatic is defined on how people uttered words with strong emphasis or

expressing something powerfully and clearly. On the other hand, in this study,

emphatic is utilized when the characters in the movie uttered words which

emphasizing swear words that gives extra pressure in their statements.

Cathartic – It is releasing one’s strong emotions from the effect of a particular activity

or experience that provides relief from anger or physical pain. In this study,

cathartic is used when characters uttered swear words that response to misfortune,

trouble or pain. It is a kind of swearing that intended to give attention in

considering being worth paying attention to.

Bad Language – There are numbers of different classification for "bad language" from

a linguistic perspective, which is always evolving in all languages. Bad language

is the theme of this study to fully comprehend swear words or utterances

produced in the movie. On the other hand, in this study, bad language serves as

how the swear words employed to show off its function and intention, which is

the root objective of the study.

Cursing – Cursing is the use of words or phrases that deal with divine power to cause

harm to others. It can also be defined as a wish for bad luck, evil, calamity, or

other misfortunes to strike a person, group, or other entity.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

10

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Insults – It is commonly defined as a verbal attack that occurs when someone taunts and

abuses another person. In this study, insults are expresses by the characters’

contempt for others. When someone insult others, people might call them a slut

(pokpok) or a bastard (bobo) which is shown in the results and discussion.

Taboo –Taboo is forbidden usually against an utterances or behavior of a person.

Taboos are explicity banned by norm or religion. It is also about discussing sexual

practices in public, including some offensive topics like mental illness and

death. In this study, taboo is used on how people with mental illness uttered and

dealt with offensive language.

Obscenity – Words that are considered obscene are the most offensive. The usage of

sex- related terms, especially private human body parts, is characterized as

obscenity. In this study, obscenity is used that includes words like “p*ki

which were uttered by the main characters in the movie.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter explores the literature review contained theory that is used to

guide the process of this research. The discussion covers analysis, swearing, swear

words, and the functions of swear words. This research also describes the short summary

of Tililing movie and short background about VinCentiments as the objects of the

research and other topics that are related to the study. Moreover, the theoretical

framework, conceptual framework and conceptual paradigm of the research are also

provided.

Swearing

According to Nordquist (2020), a curse word is a word or phrase that is

considered profane, obscene, vulgar, or otherwise offensive by the general public. Bad

words, obscenities, expletives, dirty words, profanities, and four-letter words are all

terms used to describe these words.

Swearing or cursing is the act of using a swear word. Why do people use

swear words if they are deemed offensive or wrong? As it turns out, there are varieties of

reasons why people choose to use colorful curse words in speeches, and profanity really

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

12

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

performs a few important functions in society. Here are the opinions of experts on why,

when and how people swear.

Jay and Janschewitz (2012) stated in their article that swearing can be used to

express any emotion and can have both positive and negative consequences. So far, Jay

and Janschewitz’ research has shown that most swear words are not harmful. In two

authors’ experience, public obscenity has never led to physical violence. The majority of

public uses of banned terms are harmless or have positive implications (e.g., humor

elicitation).

Functions of Swearing

In this study, the researchers elaborates the use of Swear Words according to

Pinker’s (2007) theory in the book entitled The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window

Human Nature. There are five ways of swearing, namely dysphemistic swearing,

abusive swearing, idiomatic swearing, emphatic swearing, and cathartic swearing. Here

are the descriptions of each use of swear words:

 Dysphemistic swearing – It is the opposition of euphemism. It makes the

audience consider bad or provocative subjects. Dysphemistic swearing is one

of the most common types and it is the “you look like sh*t” kind. It is not

meant to be disrespectful towards a person; rather, it is meant to describe a

situation. “This tastes like sh*t” is another instance in which the swear word is

used to convey a certain condition of circumstances rather than to insult the

other person. (another example: He f*cks her!)

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

13

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

 Abusive swearing – It is primarily defined as being directed at a person for the

purpose of abusing, intimidating, or humiliating them. It includes popular

phrases like "f*ck you" and "you're a son of a b*tch." When it comes to

swearing, the context and intonation are extremely important. “F*ck you!” is

not automatically a “f*ck you”. “F*ck you” can mean, “leave me alone” or “I

dislike you”, but it can also mean “no way”. (another example: You

motherf*cking son of a b*tch! F*ck you assh*le!)

 Idiomatic swearing – Without actually addressing the subject, the words are used

to provoke interest, show off, and convey to peers that the situation is informal.

Example of idiomatic swearing is “holy sh*t”. It does not neither describes a

condition nor is it intended to offend anyone. Instead, it seeks to catch the

listener's attention, express coolness, or signal to the listener that they are in an

informal setting. (another example: “F*ck, man”)

 Emphatic swearing – It is swearing that emphasizes and highlights a point.

Emphatic swearing is by far the favorite kind, and the most common and

accepted form of swearing around. By strategically placing a few “fucking”

and “shit” in sentences, it gives some extra pressure to the statement.

Especially the word “fuck” and its derivatives is particularly useful when

wanting to make a point. (another example: “It was so fucking big!”)

 Cathartic swearing – It is used to reduce stress, boost one’s tolerance for pain, or

frighten or scare an enemy. According to one evolutionary theory, it is

intended to convey to the audience that someone is experiencing a bad

emotion. When bad news arrives or someone breaks something, this type of

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

14

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

emotional outburst occurs. In addition, people curse when anything bad

happens, such as coffee spilling or hurt that little toe by kicking that doorframe

and cursed “Aww, fuck!” this what it means. (another example: “Damn this

coffee!”)

Why Do People Swear?

Swearing has been associated with attributes like verbal fluency, openness, and

honesty, according to studies. It lowers tension, dulls the sensation of pain, develops

peer camaraderie, and is linked to traits like verbal fluency, openness, and honesty

(Orlando 2020).

People need to understand why people swear in order to respond appropriately in

context. Swearing can be planned or completely unplanned. It would be considered

planned if a person told a joke in taboo language. However, if a person injures himself

or herself and screams in pain, it is considered unintentional.

Swear words are thought to help people express their feelings. People who swear

uneasily can reduce the physical pain they experience when they are hurt, especially

those who do not swear often (Staedter, 2011).

Thus, there are two categories of swearing: Propositional and non-

propositional. Pinker (2007) mentioned in his book that propositional swearing includes

dysphemistic, euphemistic, abusive, idiomatic, and emphatic swearing. These kinds of

swearing are often used when speakers are aware of its use and ultimately have a

purpose.

Elsewhere, Krans (2021) stated that swearing could be actually good for your

health. First, cursing during a physically painful incident has been shown in studies to

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

15

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

help us better handle the pain. Second, according to experts, using swear words might

help us develop emotional resilience and cope with events over which we have no

control. Lastly, swearing can serve a variety of purposes, including creative expression,

relationship growth, and simply allowing diverse personalities to harmonize by

communicating that person is at ease around the other person.

Living in the midst of a pandemic has given people all reason to vent, whether it

is over the constant perplexing limitations or the fear of what can happen if a person gets

the coronavirus.

However, it turns out that periodic outbursts of cursing, cussing, swearing — or

whatever people want to call it — are a good method to process the turmoil of being

human in a world where so much is beyond people’s control when done wisely and

responsibly.

Film Industry in the Philippines

Filipino academics and critics often speak of the need to project Filipino values

and culture in their popular media. Current viewing and cinema content trends are

influenced by censoring laws and rules as well as popular taste. Understanding the

representations of the Filipino self in Philippine cinema requires first a knowledge of the

cultural and social context from which it has sprung.

Sarmiento (2013) stated that independent filmmakers seem to be quite keener than

others are. Free of commercial considerations, indie films pose much promise in making

good use of the cultural lens as it depict human condition with nuance and depth. Film

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

16

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

as a discursive genre offers great potential in portraying the human condition in the

anthropological sense, that is, the depiction of culture.

It is in the films themselves where audiences can see the stars portraying the

same personas in film after film. These film personas seem all the more real because the

other media and the actors themselves find it advantageous to support these portrayals

off screen.

As a result, the line between the film image and reality becomes very dim for

much of the audience and perhaps for the stars themselves. In fact, the stars are the

primary reason why most Filipinos go to the movies.

How Movies Influences our Society

In today's environment, movies are undeniably influential. The film industry is

arguably one of the most influential sectors of modern society. In addition, because the

benefits exceed the drawbacks, it is the filmmaker's responsibility to select the

appropriate content for the appropriate audience. Moreover, to shield young minds from

content that would taint their sentiments and opinions.

Every video and every film can reflect society and transform opinions. Every

movie is set and developed in a particular culture and everyone enjoys watching movies.

Thrillers, adventures, comedies, and horror films are all part of everyday life, and the

industry is expanding every day (Elezaj, 2019).

In many ways, a good film will entertain, educate, and inspire people. A lot of films

have plots that encourage the audience to get up every morning and face the world with

hope and optimism. Movies can make people laugh, cry and think. But more

importantly, films remind people the reason to live and why it is worth existing. It

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

17

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

reminds people that every day is a new opportunity to wake up, get out into the world, to

overcome challenges and make a difference (Hassan 2021).

Film has a significant influence on today's culture. According to Fairman (2016),

film is embedded in our culture, and the industry is evolving and expanding on a daily

basis. Movies mirror society, and movies, in turn, impact society through changes in

representations, moral challenges, and the transformation of viewers' ideas. Movies

shape culture and mirror culture – aside from film reflecting people's different cultures,

film has long shaped people's views and ideals. However, there are still negative and

positive impacts of watching movies.

Watching movies may have negative and positive effects that could be a challenge

for Parents. It's important to keep in mind that a child's beliefs and habits may be

influenced by a passive lifestyle that involves a lot of time spent watching movies and

television. When a child views violent, sexual, or unrealistic children's movies or

cartoons, these ideas and beliefs may be absorbed, leading to behavior problems at

school or at home. (Romita, 2019).

According to Elezaj (2019) sex is made to appear "cool" in romantic films. Lies

are made to appear calculated in crime films. Stealing and dishonesty are also

normalized in other genres. Teenagers can now view pornographic content on the

internet and listen to music that promote drug and substance misuse. The right kind of

TV shows instill social and environmental awareness in young people and even

encourage overall social, emotional, and cognitive development.

In addition, movies are an essential aspect of who people are as it reflects people's

values and how people interact as individuals. It is easier to discern everyone's concerns,

attitudes, flaws, and strengths in movies than it is to understand them from people's

everyday encounters.

Swearing in Movies

Consider how crucial it has been for filmmakers to include swear words in their

films throughout history. There has always been swearing in movies, even before sound

was invented. Because cinema is primarily about the human experience, it is only natural

that profanity be included in the representation of that experience.

Renee (2016) mentioned that swearing can be utilized in a variety of ways, and it

was recently used to highlight the issue of vulgarity in the media and censorship. Take

some time to consider whether or not someone’s project needs swear words before

eliminating or adding it to the screenplays or films. Perhaps people do. Perhaps people

do not.

According to Vertido (2001), in the last five years or so, three censorship agencies

have been founded and commissioned, each one gradually replacing the previous. The

Movie and Television Review and Classification Board is the most recent (MTRCB). It

has recently been afflicted by issues arising from anomalies in the application of its rules

and standards, particularly in the area of classification, and a scarcity of trained

reviewers.

This may seem self-evident, but when considered in the context of the

screenwriting process, the present rating system, and the potential economic

ramifications of earning an R, adding vulgarity in a picture is a far more considered

decision than people might think.

VinCentiments

VinCentiments was named after SAWAKAS editor/cinematographer, Vincent

Asis.’ but Daryl Yap stated that it could not use SAWAKAS name, given the content of

their films. The fact that it may cause academic and institutional affiliations, so the casts

decided to make another page, which is the start of VinCentiments.

'VinCentiments' is the most trending name on social media, owing to its funny

short films like 'Perstaym Taympers,' 'Kung Pwede Lang,' 'Jowable,' ‘Tililing’,

Elevator, The Cousins: Minsan sa Pinsan, and its sequel. VinCentiments' daring and

hilarious perspective on all-too-familiar subjects has earned it a real following among

netizens. This is mostly attributed to the genius of its screenplays, which were written by

its director, Darryl Yap (Lasin, 2018).

The issue is not just with Yap's odd storytelling, which heavily depends on

flashbacks, but also with the film's convoluted storyline, in which he appears to have

poured out all of his passionate thoughts about the gore theme of his film. To his credit,

he placed his characters in a beautifully created environment, which may be enough to

pique the interest of some filmgoers who enjoy this genre.

Hence, the researchers chose VinCentiments as the subject of this study because

of its wide popularity despite the fact that have just started a few years ago.

Tililing Movie

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

20

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Tililing is a 2021 Philippines black comedy film written and directed by Daryl

Yap that was released last March 5, 2021 by Vivamax. Vincent Del Rosario III and

Veronique Del Rosario-Corpus are the producers of the film. This movie involves some

famous Filipino actors such as Baron Geisler, Gina Pareno, and Candy Pangilinan.

The main plot of Tililing revolves around three mental health patients: Socorro

(Gina Pareo), Bernie (Chad Kinis), and Peter Pan (Baron Geisler). Three nurse interns

Espie (Donnalyn Bartolome), Jessa (Yumi Lacsamana), and Maricel (Candy

Pangilinan), were all displaying unusual habits that make them difficult mental health

patients. One night, the three interns went on duty to care for their individual patients

and diagnose them appropriately. They will complete their internship and pass the

course if they are successful. Unfortunately, the guard-on-duty suffered a heart attack

that night, and all of the patients were unintentionally freed from their cells. The incident

resulted in an outburst of chaos inside the asylum (whose main gates remain sealed),

prompting interns to approach the inmates. Espie, Jessa, and Maricel worked tirelessly

to neutralize their patients in any way they could in order to complete their internship.

Vilog (2019) mentioned in her article that the term "tililing" refers to mental

disease and is sometimes used in a derogatory or contemptuous manner: "Baka may

tililing 'yan," "Para kang may tililing," and, worst of all, "Wag kang lalapit d'yan, may

tililing 'yan." This is the kind of phrase that is often used to describe someone who is a

little strange or has a true mental problem but is dismissed as "mentally unbalanced". It

generalizes people with a wide range of mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder,

autism, and schizophrenia, to name a few.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

21

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

The problem is not only that it deviates from the norm or that it is likely to utilize

foul language in every chunk of speech, which is the VinCentiments trademark, but also

that it has a strange title.

Much controversy surrounding this new film from Darryl Yap—who is no

stranger to criticism—before its Vivamax premiere. Netizens have already chastised the

film's producers, who have also produced recent hits such as Jowable and Paglaki Ko,

Gusto Ko Maging Pornstar. Yap's most recent film poster has been interpreted as a

mockery of mental health patients. Yap, on the other hand, urged the people to watch the

film before passing judgment.

Tililing is a test of endurance according to Daryl Yap. Many films have

demanded patience outright, but they usually reward audiences with beautiful and

rational resolutions.

Moreover, it is also worth noting that this film has previously spoken out about

some of the cast members’ mental health, had acted in films about the subject, or have

family members with special needs. Someone can also argue that people who deal with

mental conditions could weaponized words like “tililing” the same way some queer

people have used words like “bayot” and “bakla” to fight discrimination and empower

the community.

Some individuals failed to recognize how this film takes a step backward in

VinCentiments' fight against mental health stigma. Think of the valuable lessons about

mental health from a movie called "Tililing." If people are supposed to be enlightened by

whatever nuance it has to provide after watching it, it has already failed to achieve that

goal.

It is not and will never be funny. It may be “just a movie” to some, but film has

the power to influence, inspire or shape mindsets like other creative platforms. Persons

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

22

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

with disabilities and mental illnesses deserve better films, particularly films that do not

use the conditions for clout (Lasin, 2018).

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Functions of Swearing by Steven Pinker’s Theory (2007)

This study focused on analyzing the phenomenon of swearing and the

researchers focused on the five functions of swearing using Steven Pinker’s theory

(2007) in his book The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature.

Steven Pinker is an experimental cognitive psychologist and a popular writer on

language, mind, and human nature.

Pinker said that swearwords may be identified depending on how they are

employed, or in other words, based on their function of aiming. The researchers

analyzed swear words uttered by the main characters in VinCentiments movie “Tililing”.

The functions include Dysphemistic Swearing, Abusive Swearing, Idiomatic Swearing,

Emphatic Swearing and Cathartic Swearing.

Descriptive-and-Interpretive Theory (Schutz. 1967)

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

23

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Thematic analysis is the search for themes that emerge as crucial to the description

of a phenomenon (Daly, Kellehear, and Gliksman, 1997). The process entails identifying

themes via careful reading and re-reading of the data (Rice and Ezzy, 1999). It is a type

of data pattern recognition in which emerging themes become the categories for

analysis. The method of analysis chosen for this study was a combination of qualitative

methods of thematic analysis, incorporating both Boyatzis' (1998) data-driven inductive

approach and the deductive approach.

Schutz's social phenomenology is a descriptive and interpretive theory of social

action that investigates subjective experience within the commonsense world of

individuals' daily lives. Schutz's theory places a premium on the spatial and temporal

dimensions of experience and social relationships. According to social phenomenology,

people in the world of daily life can ascribe meaning to a situation and then make

judgments. In this study, the subjective meaning of experience was the subject of

interpretation.

Boyatzis (1998), and Crabtree and Miller (1999) presented that the descriptive-and-

interpretive theory by Alfred Schutz have been used together as frameworks in this

study. As the supposed foundation of this study, these combined frameworks show the

relation of constructs that will lead to the answer on how the selected subjects of this

study came up to the opinion that they’re using. This will first introduce the descriptive

and interpretive theory by Schutz which can be rooted from code categories formed

from the code manual such as; the motives, social relationships, the meaning of social

action, systems of relevance, ideal types, and common sense.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

24

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

The researchers analyzed and examined the use of swear words in Tililing movie

as the subject. One of main causes why Tililing and other VinCentiments’ films gained

controversy is the existence of intense vulgar language.

Content analysis is used in this research, considering that content analysis is a

research method used to identify patterns in recorded communication. To conduct

content analysis, it systematically collects data from a set of texts, which can be written,

oral, or visual: books, newspapers and magazines, speeches and interviews, web content

and social media posts, photographs and films.

According to Harwood & Garry (2003), content analysis was employed to

analyze newspaper articles, periodicals, hymns, advertising, and other political speeches

during the nineteenth century. The content analysis method can be used to investigate

five different sorts of texts. The basic unit of analysis in content analysis can be a word,

a phrase, a sentence, a paragraph, an article, a picture, a video, an MMS, or a television

program, films etc.

Documents, artifacts, films, audios, and other types of communication text can all

be studied using content analysis. It refers to a technique for extracting useful

information from long, complex messages or text. It attaches meaning to the content

(messages) and draws important conclusions through content analysis (Showkat and

Parveen 2017).

One of the most effective methods is conducting unobtrusive research where the

research that does not collect data directly from individuals is content analysis. Rather

than studying individuals directly, content analysis can be used to examine material.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

25

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

The researchers used content analysis for the interpretation and examining the

material in the use of swear words and functions of swear words in Tililing film, which

is the main objective of the study. The researchers just analyzed and examined the

content of the film, which means it does not involve any individuals.

The researcher also used thematic analysis since this analysis is a qualitative

research method to a wide variety of conceptual frameworks and research questions. It is

a technique for identifying, analyzing, organizing, describing, and reporting on themes

discovered in a data set (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Boyatzis (1998) defined thematic

analysis as a translator between the languages of qualitative and quantitative analysis,

allowing researchers using different research methods to communicate with one another

using the Focus Group Discussion.

In connection of the analysis presented above, the researchers discussed the

responses of the six chosen participants and collected their ideas and interpreted the

following utterances to determine the themes of the responses that is shown in the

corresponding category which is presented in chapter four.

The researchers were able to learn the opinions of the viewers about swearing

and the use of swear words in the VinCentiments’ film "Tililing" based on the data

acquired in Focus Group Discussion.

Moreover, this research aimed to investigate two important points of the

objectives i.e functions of uttering swear words and intention or motive of uttering swear

words in Tililing movie. This research is conducted with unobtrusive research approach

under content analysis, where the research that does not collect data directly from

individuals.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

26

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

The researchers wholly analyzed the content itself; therefore, the researchers

were not biased in the study conducted using content analysis and thematic analysis to

support the data needed.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents procedures and working steps for analyzing and examining

swearing in the main characters in VinCentiments movie “Tililing” by Daryl Yap. This

section comprises (1) Research Locale, (2) Research Design, (3) Population and

Sampling, (4) Research Instrument, (5) Data Gathering Procedure, (6) Ethical

Considerations used as a guide to facilitate the data of this research.

Locale of the Study

This research was conducted via an online platform in order to collect data in

Focus Group Discussion. The researchers used Google Meet to collect the data.

Google Meet is a video conference available to everyone and can create an online

meeting with participants. It has the appropriate functions, such as audio and video

recording that can be used to collect data. This allows the researchers to play back and

examine the video recording recorded in Google Meet.

28

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Research Design

The researchers employed a mixed-method approach to achieve the research

goals dealing with swearing practices used in the movie. According to Gronmo (2020), a

mixed-method study is one in which qualitative and quantitative data are collected,

analyzed and interpreted in a study that looks at the underlying occurrence. A research

design that contains both philosophical assumptions and inquiry procedures is known as

mixed-method (Cameron, 2011).

Content analysis was employed in the first three objectives as a research tool to

determine the presence of specific words, categorization and discussion (Luo 2021). It is

the method that was applied in this study, as the researchers believed it was appropriate

method for textual investigation.

The researchers started by identifying the swear words uttered by the main

characters in the VinCentiments film Tililing and determining their functions using

Steven Pinker's Five Functions of Swearing within qualitative data.

Then idetinfyied the motives or intentions of using swear words within

quantitative data. As a result, the researchers could easily define the study they wanted

to explore by providing fixed percentages to give a clear explanation by offering

statistical work in the form of percentages. In this case, the researchers presented tables

and interpretations in order to have a clear discussion and presentation of the data

gathered.

Furthermore, as part of the fourth objective, the researchers conducted a Focus

Group Discussion (FGD) and data gathering approach in which small groups of people

discuss a topic or issue in depth with the assistance of a professional, external

29

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

moderator. Thematic analysis is also used in transcribing and interpreting participants’

responses.

Population and Sampling

The researchers gathered the data using mainly the internet and the recorded film

guided by the method of content analysis in order to answer the three first objectives.

Purposive Sampling is used as a sampling method in employing participants for

FGD. Purposive sampling method proved to be effective when only limited numbers of

people can serve as primary data sources due to the nature of research design, aims and

objectives.

Six (6) participants ranging from 18 to 25 years old were selected. The

participants should be aware of the VinCentiments’ films and know the meaning of

swearing.

Six participants were chosen to be interviewed. The researchers conducted an

informal survey using a Google form to determine the possible responses based on the

multiple-choices that provides more near-objective choices for respondents.

Research Instrument

Research instrument is a tool, which is designed by a researcher to collect data

(Ari, 2010). The researchers, themselves, were the main instrument in doing the content

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

30

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

analysis, where the researchers are able to observe mundane details while taking notes of

it- actively participating in the research process. Moreover, the tool deployed by the

researchers was in the form of a data sheet and served as the second instrument of the

study.

The data that have been collected were transferred into categorization system,

which was drawn to a table presented as Table 1. The categorization was about the

functions of swear words. The significance of categorizing data was to enable the

researcher to recognize and group data according to the similar features or patterns,

which the data possess. The researchers employed a data sheet for collecting and

presenting the swear words found in the movie Tililing and categorizing the data into

functions of swearing.

The first data sheet was created according to the swear words found in the movie

uttered by main characters while the second data sheet was illustrated according to the

functions of swear words. The motives or intentions of swearing uttered by the main

characters are based on the result of the amount of percentage and are explained in the

third date sheet.

Focus Group Discussion (FGD) is used in conducting interviews, reflecting on the

meaning of observation and interview data as recommended by Creswell (2012). FGDs

are a predetermined semi-structured interview led by skilled moderators or researchers.

The questions are Open-Ended which do not provide participants with a

predetermined set of answer choices, instead allowing the participants to provide

responses in their own words. The researchers’ goal is to generate the maximum amount

of discussion and opinions within a given time period.

FGDs typically in groups of four to six, in this research, hence, six participants

were selected to gather the data using interview questions to know the opinions of

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

viewers regarding the use of swear words in VinCentiments movie “Tililing” and

swearing itself. The researchers asked broad questions to elicit responses and generate

discussion among the participants.

The format of the data sheets are illustrated in the table below.

Data Gathering Procedure

Data collection is a method of gathering information from various sources in

order to understand a phenomenon (Rouse, 2017). The process of data gathering

includes data collection through note taking. Nordquist (2019) defines note taking as a

technique of writing down or otherwise recording important pieces of information and a

crucial step in the research process.

The researcher used the note-taking technique by carefully watching and

listening to the movie. Meanwhile, the following phases comprise the data collection

procedure.

Watching the film Tililing was the first step. It was required to do so since it was

important to understand the story's background and the attitudes of all of the characters.

It was also necessary to determine whether the film had sufficient data to help the

researchers in analyzing the issues.

The second step was the researchers wrote down pieces of information indicating

swear words that are collected from the Tililing movie and its utterances. The sources of

data employed were from a movie, which was already transcribed by Vivamax using the

English subtitle.

The final step was classifying and transferring dialogues containing swear words

into the data sheet.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

33

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

The researchers observed the data with their contexts of the utterances to

determine functions of swearing; checking the accuracy of the transcript; the researcher

categorized the data according to Pinker’s (2007) theory on functions of swearing. The

researchers explained the data narratively according to their functions for swearing in

Tililing with respect to the context of the utterances. Then, has drawn conclusions based

on the research findings for the first three objectives.

To answer the last objective, the researchers conducted Focus Group Discussion

(FGD). Before the FGD conducts, the informal survey was the first step in choosing the

six participants, using the google form online platform, then, interview questions were

asked to the participants to know their opinions and ideas relating to swear words and

VinCentiments’ Tililing movie that was conducted using Google Meet. Meanwhile, the

following phases comprise the data collection procedure in FGD.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the results of the research are presented in detail on the findings

and discussion section. The results answered the objectives of the research that are to

identify and determine the functions of swear words in Tililing movie. In addition, the

frequencies of the functions of swear words are explained. Further analysis of each

problem is presented in the discussion section.

The research on swear words used by characters in the film Tililing is discussed

in this section. The total number of data gathered for this study, 76, are shown in Table 2

following the discussion. The frequency of the functions and uses of swear words used

by the characters in the Tililing movie are displayed in the table. The following table

will show the outcomes, which are varied.

Corresponding to objective number one, identified swear words in

VinCentiments’ Tililing movie uttered by the main characters are presented in the table

above. Therefore, an attention is given to the swearing 76 expressions and their

accompanying utterances in order to understand the film’s intention or motive of the

utterances.

A character can be expressed through dialogue and physical movement.

People frequently enjoy a certain movie because they can relate to the characters. In the

movie Tililing, characters uttered swear ast it may directly address the ideas or they may

be disclosed in the point-of-view. According to Reich (2017) the concepts of the movie

might also be revealed through dialogue. Film dialogue plays a significant role in scene

design and serves a variety of distinct purposes. Expository information that is required

for the audience to comprehend the story can be conveyed through dialogue.

As per the table above, the three nurses played by Yumi Lacsamana as Jessa

Cawagas, Candy Pangilinan as Maricel Asuncion, and Donalyn Bartolome as Ezperanza

Balingit had the most swear words used in their lines and consequently received the

most screen time in the film. Chad Kinis as Bernie, Gina Pareno as Socorro and Baron

Geisler as Peter had a limited swear words used in their lines and due to their limited

screen time in the film. In addition, the three characters also used swearing, but it was

not as frequent and instense as the objective of this study needed.

Moreover, in relation to the second objective, swearing is categorized

according to the functions of swearing, which can be observed through the context of the

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

39

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

situation in which the swear words are deployed. Finally, to show that the findings

amount of the percentage for the first and second objective are related, research results

are displayed in Table 3.

Table 5: Data Sheet of Categorized Words with Utterances to its Functions of

Swear Words

A. DYSPHEMISTIC SWEARING

“T*ng-ina! San tayo pupunta?”

“Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t!”

“Hindi ako b*bo!”

“Mamamatay na tayong mga p*tang-inang panty niyo pa ang pinoproblema

ninyo!”

“Ano bang hapunan mo? t*e?”

“Halika dito dali! Oh, pumili kana ng isa.. Itae mo na ‘yan”

In the utterances above it shows that the main characters uses dysphemistic

swearing. Dysphemisms are exclamatory swear words that express irritation or anger

without directly aiming it at a person. In example above, one of the characters uttered

“Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!” in which the swear words are used to

talk about things or situations that irritates and frustrates them.

According to Steven Pinker (2007), it forces the listener to think about negative

or provocative matters. Dysphemistic swearing is among the most accepted kinds. This

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

40

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

function does not aimed in insulting someone as much as it is meant to describe a

person. In this matter, the main character in this movie employs this type of profanity,

which encourages listeners to consider bad or offensive topics. In other words, it used to

express that the speaker thinks of the topic and to persuade the listener to do so as well.

Dysphemism includes swearing, calling someone names, and making any kind of

hurtful remark intended to offend or cause harm to someone else. Dysphemisms are

exclamatory swear words used to express irritation or rage (Keith Allan and Kate

Burridge, 2006).

B. ABUSIVE SWEARING

“Anong mental? Bahay ko ‘to ul*l ka!”

“Papahiram mo din pala n*mo, t*ng-ina mo ka”

“Buksan mo ang pinto Felipe! Mahal ko, Felipe! T*ng-ina mo Felipe! W*lang

“Yung nakapatong yung bawal! B*bo! B*bo ka talaga”

“Alam niyo ba yung ano pa ang bawal dito? Yung mga b*bo’ng katulad niyo!”

“P*tang-ina mo din!”

“Tabi! P*tang-ina mo ka! E halos ipakain mo na nga sa akin tapos ngayon mag-

“E bakit nga daw ba ipapakita yan ni Ma’am Divine? T*nga!”

“Di ba?! alam nyo namang minamaltrato sila dito! Ang akala nila, kayo ang

“Tumahimik kayong p*tang-ina niyoooo!”

“P*tang-ina niyo, bitawan niyo ako!”

“Oh! Heto p*ki ng ina mo! Ha! Oh ito suotin mo panty ko!”

“L*ntik ka ha!”

“P*tang-ina niyo!”

“Huy ikaw! P*tang-ina mo ka!”

“Ay p*tang-ina mo! Panty ko yan magnanakaw ka! Panty ko yan!”

“Thursday suot kasi ninakaw mong h*yop kang bw*kaw ka ng ina mo!”

“Magnanakaw kang sh*ta ng ina mo!”

“p*ki ng ina mo”

The main characters in the movie, are more on uses of abusive swearing

with the definition as harsh or offensive language directed towards another person. In

example utterances above, the characters always used swear words with “ka” “mo”

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

42

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

“nito/ito” and “niyo” that signifies that the speaker intended to insult the person to

whom the speaker was talking. This function of swearing includes name-calling and

other cursing expressions that shows aggressive

behaviourhttps://www.lawinsider.com/dictionary/abusive-language  or lack of respect for

others.

Steven Pinker (2007) mentioned that when people insult or offense someone

directly, the speaker attacks them in any words that provoke hatred, mockery, or

disrespect towards any person, sex or group, race, tribe, religion, political or religious

affiliation.

In addition, Dutton (2007) argued that because swear words are nasty, harsh, and

disgusting, they have negative connotations. The most people regarded words like

"fuck" (mockery) and "cunt" (sexual) offensive, at least in part, and linked persons who

used them with bad traits.

C. IDIOMATIC SWEARING

“What the F! Oh Sh*t Ano yan?!”

“Pupunta tayo sa Tondo! P*kshit!

“P*tang-ina! T*ng-ina! T*ng-ina! Uggghh!”

“Alam ko na! Alam ko na! P*tang-ina!”

“P*kpok?! Muntik pa akong mapagkamalang na bibida sa porn”

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

43

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Just like dysmphemistic swearing, idiomatic swearing is also use without really

referring to the matter or aiming at a person. The words are used to raise interest, show

off, and express to peers in using idiomatic swearing. In the examples above, the

characters uses swear words expressions like “What the F!” and “PakSh*t” to catch the

listener's attention, express coolness or feelings, or communicate to the audience that

they are in an informal setting.

According to Steven Pinker (2007), idiomatic swearing does not describe a state

or aimed at insulting anyone. Instead, it used for no other reason than to indicate that the

discourse and interaction between the speaker and the listener is casual.

D. EMPHATIC SWEARING

“Hindi ako b*bo ha?”

“Oh sige, sunugin na nating yang bw*kanang inang shit na ‘yan.”

“Gustong-gusto ko ng umusad, guston-gusto ko ng makatapos ha?! Pero hindi

ko alam kung makakaalis pa ako sa p*tang-inang ‘to!”

“Ay p*ki mong may balbas”

“What the F? pinapatuyo mo ‘yong mga sh*t na yan??”

“Sunugin na natin ‘yang bwk*nang sh*t na ‘yan”

“Mamili ka! Buhol mo dyan sa may p*ki mo o buhol mo dyan sa leeg mo!”

“Ha? Ano ba ang k*ntot? Masarap ba ‘yon?”

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

44

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

“Kung gusto mo k*ntot nalang”

Emphatic swearing is used to emphasize and to show a point. For example ‘It

was so fucking big!’, it emphasized that something is big. In the example above,

“Sunugin na natin ‘yang bwk*nang sh*t na ‘yan?” it emphasized that ‘na yan’ is

defined as “bwk*nang sh*t” and because this utterance is example of emphatic

swearing, igives some extra pressure or highlight to your statement.

Steven Pinker (2007) stated that emphatic swearing is a swearing that underlines

and meant to call attention to something that is thought to be important. It is to

emphasize a word that has been used to describe an event or person in an unfavorable or

good way.

Characters in the movie tend to employ emphatic swearing since it serves the

purpose of emphasizing something they want to say but cannot convey linguistically.

E. CATHARTIC SWEARING

“Bitawan niyo ako! P*tang-ina! Aray ano ba!”

“Felipe! Mahal ko babalik ako! T*ng-ina! Tibayan mo loob mo!”

“Aking irog andito ako, ang minamahal mong si Socorro. T*ng-ina!”

“Sh*t anong gagawin natin?”

“H*yop! Ang sakit non!”

“Oh oh oh oh! T*ng-ina! Jessa? Jessa ba pangalan mo?”

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

45

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

“Aray! ang p*ki kong may balbas”

Finally, the characters utilized cathartic swearing in the movie, which means it is

a response to grief or tragedy. In the utterances above, most of the cathartic swear words

uttered by the main characters are to response in tolerance for pain and the rest are to

startle or intimidate an attacker or to someone that is the speaker’s speaking to.

According to Steven Pinker (2007) cathartic swearing is considered as neither

courteous nor impolite. Another of cathartic swearing is when bad news has come

around or someone has broken something, emotional outburst happens. For example,

when someone spilled hot coffee at your t-shirt while walking in the street, and you

respond “Aww f*ck! It hurts!.” It signifies that you respond a cathartic swearing to show

that you are in pain.

Corresponding to objective number two, this section described the findings of the

research on swear words uttered by the characters in Tililing movie. From the analysis

process, the total data collected in this research are 76 swear words expressions which

were categorized in its functions of swearing and are displayed in Table 2 above. Below

each table are the provided interpretations of the data collected to fully understand if the

utterances connect and relate to its functions of swearing.

The frequency of the occurrence of functions of swear words uttered by the

characters in Tililing movie and are displayed in the table below.

Table 6 shows the 76 swear words expressions from the movie of

VinCentiments’ Tililing. The researchers has found five functions of swear words which

used by the main characters in the movie, i.e. Dysphemistic Swearing, Abusive

Swearing, Idiomatic Swearing, Emphatic Swearing, and Cathartic Swearing according

to Pinker’s theory.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

47

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Corresponding to objective number 3, besides determining the functions of swear

words, the researchers also identified the motive or intention using swear words uttered

by the main characters. According to the result presented in Table 6, Abusive Swearing

has the highest percentage of occurrences in the context of utterances of the main

characters in the movie and Cathartic Swearing as the least.

As for the function of swear words, abusive swearing becomes the most

dominant function found in Tililing movie and has the longest lists of swear words

uttered by the main character. Steven Pinker (2007) argued that best expression to show

disrespect and insult toward other people is using abusive swearing since it is directed

and aimed to hurt someone.

In Tililing movie, the characters mostly uttered abusive swear words when they

wanted to show their dislike or rudeness toward someone. It occurs 35 times and gets the

percentage of 46.05%. It also includes name-calling and other cursing expressions that

are offensive like “Mga p*tang-*na nyo!” “h*yop kang p*ke ng *na mo!”. Then, to

emphasize their disrespect and insults, abusive swear words are chosen as the top way to

express their feelings.

Dysphemestic Swearing showed in the movie as another motive of characters’

swearing. It occurs 14 times and gets the percentage of 18.42%. Under this motive,

swearing is used by speakers in response to unpleasant psychological states like

irritation, tension, or frustration that does not aimed directly to a person.

Moreover, Idiomatic Swearing occurs 9 times ang gets the percentage of 11.84%.

Under this motive, characters swear because something or someone surprises them. In

addition, they aim to make their arguments in unusual ways, the characters in Tililing

use idiomatic swearing. Idiomatic swearing is a type of cursing that frequently uses an

idiom and whose connotative meaning makes it difficult to understand the expression's

meaning on its own (Ljung, 2011).

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

48

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Emphatic Swearing occurs 11 times and gets the percentage of 14.47%. Under

this motive, characters used swearing because they believe that in a given circumstance,

their messages need to be more emphasized in order for their views to be understood by

their interlocutors. Since the term is solely used to communicate a single emotion, this

cursing is therefore not intended to offend and is not addressed to a particular addressee

(Pincer, 2007).

Meanwhile, cathartic function becomes the least to occur in Tililing movie that

swear words appeared 7 time and gets the percentage of 9.21%. According to Steven

Pinker (2007) cathartic function occurs when something bad happens and is used in

response to pain or misfortune. In Tililing, only few cathartic words have found which

seems to be in response only when character is in pain like“Bitawan moko! Put*ngina!

Aray ano ba!” and “Aray! Ang p*ke kong may balbas!” are the examples. Under this

motive, the speaker swears because they are experiencing physical pain. In other words,

since both involve numbing pain, this form of cursing is comparable to stab-toe

swearing. In this situation, swearing acts as a pain tolerance mechanism by assisting the

swearers in coping with their suffering. Also, obscenity was exposed due to use of

sexual term specifically body part p*ki in the utterance of the character.

So therefore, functions and motives of swearing emerged in Tililing movie are

abusive swearing, emphatic swearing, idiomatic swearing, cathartic swearing, cathartic

wearing, and dysphemistic swearing.

Corresponding to objective number 4, the researchers conducted a Focus Group

Discussion to collect information from the respondents. Below is the presentation of the

results of the FGD in table form.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

The table above shows their opinion regarding the use of swear words in

VinCentiments’ films which is the “Tililing” movie directed by Daryl Yap using the

five functions of swearing by Steven Pinker’s Theory (2007).

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter conveys three different sections: summary, conclusions and

suggestions. In conclusions, two points are concluded from the results based on the

objectives of this research. In suggestions, some suggestions are given to some parties

related to the results.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

62

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

A. Summary of Findings

1. The first objective of this research is to identify the swear words uttered by

main characters in the movie. The researchers found out that each character in the movie

uttered different functions of swearing in their interaction with other characters.

2. The second objective is to determine the function of swear words in Tililing

movie. All functions of swear words appeared in the utterances spoken by the main

characters in Tililing movie. From the tables presented, it can be noticed that the most

dominant function used by the characters is abusive swearing which appears 35 times

(46.05%). Then, the second highest frequency is dysphemistic swearing, which appear

14 times (18.42%) and emphatic swearing which appear 11 times (14.47%). Finally, the

idiomatic swearing, which appears 9 times (11.84%) and the least to occur is cathartic

swearing which appears only 7 times (09.21%).

3. The third objective is to identify the motive or intention of using swear words.

Abusive Swearing becomes the most frequently used swear words because it is

considered as the most effective way to insult or offense someone. The least frequently

use of swear words is Cathartic Swearing.

4. The last objectiveof the study is to know the opinions of viewers about

swearing, swear words in films and swear words in VinCentiments’ Tililing which the

researchers conducted a focus group discussion. The researchers asked with open-ended

questions, fully transcribed it, and discussed it with no biased of participants’ responses.

B. Conclusions

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

63

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

Related in the formulation of the problems in Chapter I, the findings and

discussions in Chapter IV, and the content analysis approach employed in this study,

some conclusions can be shown as follows:

1. Different functions of swearing are utilized in the way the main characters

swear in VinCentiments films “Tililing” movie. The functions of swearing which are

found in the movie can be classified into five functions using Steven Pinker’s (2007)

theory. They are Dysphemistic Swearing (DS), Abusive Swearing (AS), Idiomatic

Swearing (IS), b Swearing (ES), and Cathartic Swearing (CS), from the findings of the

functions of swearing, it reveals that Abusive Swearing is preferred function of swearing

employed by the main characters in the VinCentiments movie “Tililing”.

2. The duration of the movie is 1 hour 27 minutes and 55 seconds and the

swearing expressions they uttered are in the form of their way of speaking, although the

functions of those swear words may vary.

3. The reasons for the main characters of VinCentiments“Tililing” movie is to

swear exist as the parameters to determine and to identify the motives or intentions of

swear words uttered by the main characters. The findings of this study shows that

abusive swearing was the most influential function for the emphasis of the swear words

uttered by the main characters in VinCentiments “Tililing” movie.

4. The main characters of the movie “Tililing” has been accustomed to use

swearing expressions in their interactions with the different characters in the

Thus, swearing has become their way of speaking. It causes them to swear all the time,

even when the swearing expressions are directed or not.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

64

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

5. Therefore, although abusive swearing are the most dominant function for the

main characters in “Tililing” movie to swear the existence of swearing expressions,

main characters also used the different functions of swearing in the movie. In employing

the main characters' utterances under the five functions of swearing they are used to

provoke matters, insult people, denote expressions, emphasize something, and express

strong emotions. On the other hand, those 76 swearing expressions are dominant

functions of swearing of the main characters.

C. Recommendations

1. There are many other characters whose swearing expressions and utterances are

also worth-analyzing, such as the swearing of the other characters in the films, and

also the use of swear words by male and female characters.

2. Focusing on a particular aspect of swearing not just functions of swearing but also

types of swearing to develop a more in-depth understanding of the behaviors of

swearing.

3. This type of study can use other relevant subjects and different approach to fulfill

the proposed theory and to have a deeper analysis.

4. The future researchers are expected to understand that analysis is not only about

linguistics features. Thus, they have to study language aspects deeper and gain more

in-depth information about swearing practices customs.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

65

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

5. Other researchers can use other approach like sociolinguistics approach to study the

connection between societal status and the usage of swearing. Swearing is not

occurring only in the films, it is also issued in social media, newspaper and radio.

6. Students of linguistics who are analyzing swear words would do well to focus more

on the words' functions, types and other aspects of swearing, which do not always

indicate that the speaker is trying to offend others. By calling one's name with

specific functions or types of banned phrases, they can be used to demonstrate

intimacy or to preserve a good connection in positive way.

7. Analyzing the story's context is imporant when researching language phenomena in

film in order to comprehend how culture affects language use.

APPENDIX E: FGD RESPONDENTS’ ANSWER

Participant 1
1. What is your opinion when people swear?
Sige, ano, ahhh for me when people are saying swear words like ganon is I feel
like it’s their personality like okay lang sakin kase it’s their personality eh parang
who am I to judge them, kung ang personality nila is saying swear words, kase for
me it adds the mood to a certain sentence or scenario, ganon.
2. What is your opinion about films that contain bad language and lewd
content?
ahhh for me ang opinion ko about films that having bad language is.. just okay

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

76

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

and it’s a good way of ahhh saying er.. it’s a good way of exploring things here in
the Philippines like one of the, one of the taboo issues here are ahhh the R18
movies like ganon, and kase ‘pag kase nag babad language or ang forte ay bad
language, it’s a indi film, it’s an indi film so for me kase mas pinag eeffortan ang
indi films nowadays and mas maganda sya. So, I feel like, that’s a, that a good
flatform for a.. alarm, ahh hindi ehhh for raising awareness of a certain taboo issue
dito sa Pilipinas.
3. Opinion upon the movie using swearwords like “Tililing”?
Next is, opinion upon the movies using swear.. ahhhh ito medyo ahhhh what do I
call this, I feel like using swear words in the film na sa tililing is for me it’s
inappropriate. Kase ahmm in sa tililing kase I believe na ang pinofocus ni Daryl
Yap is all about raising awareness when it comes to mental health, and for me kase
kung alam mo na ang nireraise mo is for mental health dapat you should be
sensitive enough to use words na pwedeng maka trigger dun sa tao like syempre
ang manonood non for example is a person who is suppering from, from a mental
health, and I feel like the moment that they heard a certain swear word, it might
attack their trauma and, I feel like its not appropriate for the movie.
Participant 2
1. What is your opinion when people swear?
Sige, for number one. Whats your opinion when people swear? So, for me actually
it depends on the situation. Example, kapag galit kayo nagmumurahan example
kapag galit yung partner mo tas minura ka, nagmumurahan kayo sometimes may
ano na nasasaktan ka kunwari ah minura ka nya “putang-ina mo!” “tang-ina ka
talaga, mamataya kana” masasaktan ka syempre kasi partner mo ‘yong nagsabi
sa iyo nun. Ah, another example is pag magfefriends kayo and you’re talking about
something or nagkukwento ng kung ano mang mga jokes or nagrereact “ah talaga
sis!? Ay shit tang-ina mo, oo nga sis!” mga ganon, it’s okay lang naman and ahh-
actually syempre ahh reaction lang naman ng ng tao yung magmura and I
considered that a reaction ng tao lang din. At tsaka.. so, ang pinakang answer ko
dito sa number one it always depend on the situation at tsaka it depends din sa
ano.. interpretation ng taong nakakarinig.
2. What’s your opinion about films that contain bad language and lewd
content?
Ah okay so number two, okay proceed na ako sa number two. Okay so, what’s
your opinion about films that contain bad language and led content? Okay! Sa akin
okay lang naman sa akin dito. Ah.. na..iconsider na.. yung mga ganitong klaseng
lines, yung mga swearwords sa kanilang mga dialogues. Ma-na ipapanuod din to
ng kunwari mga bata siguro it’s not appropriate na panuodin to ng mga under age
ng mga eighteen pababa or mga sixteen pababa, fifteen pababa, twelve pababa kasi
syempre mga bata pa naman sila, they need guidance pa. But, if adult naman ang
manunuod nito it’s okay lang naman kasi.. you know ahh.. naiintindihan nanaman
nila siguro ‘yong mga ganung klaseng mga swearwords kasi sa sinasabi din
nanaman nila ‘yon.

3. Opinion upon the movies using swearwords like “Tililing”?

Ah, next is.. opinion upon the movies using swearwords like “Tililing”? Dito sa
movies, sa movie na ito.. ah.. I think na.. ‘yong mga swearwords na ginamit nila
dito ay.. for me, it okay lang din, okay lang din.. ayun.. kasi dito sa movie na ‘to..
tulad nga nung ano, si.. Daryl Yap ay he is more on to ‘yong mga bagay na hindi
sya yung.. parang alam mo ‘yong tinatago ‘yong alam mo ‘yong anong term don
sa.. he’s not into sho-sugar coating kung ano talaga ‘yong mga dapat words na
sabihan nung isang tao, ‘yon talaga yung sasabihin, you know, yung tamang
words na hindi naman kailangan gamitin yung synonym na parang yung synonym
word non na parang di sya masyadong offended pakinggan, yung parang ganon,

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

77

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

siguro okay lang na iyun yung mga swear words dun sa movie.
Participant 3
1. What is your opinion when people swear?
So, what is your opinion when people swear? Ah.. dati.. dati kasi ah lalo na nung
mga nasa senior high pa ako.. ahmm, the typical reaction of me ay ano parang..
nagugulat, nabibigla tapos just like (name of the participant) ahmm.. when they
swear it reflects on their personality, pero nung naglipat ako dito sa Lucena and
ang bungad sa ‘kin ay (School name). Para syang ano parang naging swearing is
part of the daily basis of life, parang “putang-ina mo ang aga mo ah” ganon
parang nasa daily conversation na, parang palutungan ng pagmumura. And then,
nong lumipat din ako sa (School name), naging ganon lang din yung bungad sa
‘kin so, ano parang slowly, ay hindi naman parang slowly, agad-agad ko din sya
agad na- naabsorb na.. ano parang ganto it is a norm for people here na magmura..
na hindi sila.. hindi sila pinapagalitan magmura. Meron ding mga pinapagalitan
pero mostly hindi talaga sila pinapagalitan or never silang nakorekan kung bat sila
nagmumura. Kaya nagging reaction ko lang na salita ay “ah, okay” parang, you
can use or you can swear all day, you can swear kahit kausap mo ay kaibigan mo
sa ano.. sa kahit san, parang la- ‘yon nga sabi ko, parang nagging syang part ng
daily conversation na naging norm sya, na you can use it anytime, anywhere
wihout ah.. restrictions.
2. What’s your opinion about films that contain bad language and lewd
content?
Number two, what is your opinion about films that contain bad language and lewd
content? Ah, for me, films that contain bad language and lewd content is ano..
maganda sya para sa ‘kin but with moderation like halimbawa ay ano.. may
tamang patnubay at gabay ganon, ‘pag tayo’y naging magulang maggagabayan
ganon ‘di ba? Kasi ahmm pinakang nagustuhan ko din dito dati sa VinCentiments
lalo na ‘yong pinaka favourite ko sa kanila ay ‘yong movie na ano.. ‘yong kay- kay
Molina.. anong title non.. ‘yong Jowable, ‘yon yung pina-pinakang nakakuha ng
ano ng attention ko sa VinCentiments kasi.. it is a portrayal of real life
conversations na parang okay.. oo nga, like halimbawa nag-iinom ka wala naming
magsasabing.. para ba gang wala namang nag-nagmamalinis dito like parang
“putang-ina mo kaya nga ako nag-iinom e kasi wala akong jowa” ganon. Para
ba gang realistic line so therefore I understand na ah.. the main point of Daryl Yap
showing us films like this, videos like this, and movies like this is because ahmm..
he wants to portray reality and that is what people are getting. However, ahmm..
kumbaga’y ‘yon nga kailangan ng tamang patnubay at gabay ‘yon.

3. Opinion upon the movie using swearwords like “Tililing”?

Oh number three, opinion upon the movie using swearwords like “Tililing”? Dito
naman sa “Tililing”, ahmm.. just like (particiopant’s name) said.. inappropriate sya
sa movie na “Tililing” kasi there are people who are traumatized on swearing.. and
there are also people who gets.. ano.. triggered ‘pag nakarinig sya ng swearing or
kahit na konting mura. Ahmm, meron silang mga, lalo na ‘yong mga.. may mga
ano.. post ano mga ano.. post traumatic experiences ganon. Ahh.. kaya para sa
movie na “Tililing” parang inappropriate sya kasi ‘yon nga sa context palang
inappropriate na sya including our mental ano ahh.. illed patience.. unlike don sa
movie na ano Jowable like a real conversation with a friend na.. ayun nagmumura
ka.. nag-iinom tayo, nagmumura ka, tha’s fine pero pag dating sa mental health
ahh patience parang inappropriate sya.
Participant 4
1. What is your opinion when people swear?
So the first question is, what is your opinion when people swear? Of course my
first reactions is dun sa lugar na pinagmumurahan kase nga may lugar na for public

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

78

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

use and private use, pag shempre nasa school tayo at may nag mura, mapapatingin
2. What is your opinion about films that contain bad language and lewd
content?
Napakahalaga nito yung films na papanuodin kasi, hindi naman lahat ng audience
ay ah matatanda kaya meron tayong di ba ano bago ipalabas ang film bago
ipalabas yung, yung isang teleserye. Ano unlike other swearing meron tayong
Movie and Televsion Review and Classification Board o yung MTRCB, alam nyo
yung MTRCB sila yung nagsasabi, this movie is parental guardian, this movie is
applicable to all children, this movie is SPG strongly parental guidance kailangan
ng striktong patnubay, so gantong paraan magkakameron tayo ng ahm ahh yung
thinking kung ano nga ba dapat papanuorin natin so ito yung Tililing kasi hindi
naman sya basta pwede basta basta panuorin ng bata dapat may guide parin. Kaso
ngalang may nakakalusot since walang gabay ng parents or nakakatanda kaya yan
nagagamit rin na-a-apply rin ng mga bata.

3. Opinion upon the movie using swearwords like “Tililing”?

ganun.
Participant 5
1. What is your opinion when people swear?
So, for my number one answer is what is your opinion when people swear?
Ahmm, sa akin, for me it’s okay lang magswear pero depende yun sa tao o sa
context o conversation kasi yung paggamit sa pagmura may iba’t ibang..
according nga dun sa functions may iba’t iba syang gamit. So, yung pagmumura
mayroon din naman syang advantage tsaka disadvantages. So, for me, sabi ko nga
depende sya sa tao or okay lang sya sa mga tao kung kakilala mo ‘yon or sobrang
kilala mo na talaga yung tao pwede ka nang magmura sa kanya kasi para sa kanya
biro lang ‘yon, or.. or nagjojoke kalang, parang form of joke mo lang din yun sa
kanya or biruan tapos para sa ‘ken din ha? Kung nakakatulong din sya para para
makam-makaramdaman mo yung relief, alam mo yung for example, ang dami mo
ng problema sa sarili mo tapos parang ‘pag minura mo lang sya “tang-ina! Pagod
na ako.” yung ganun. Parang ano, masarap sa pakiramdam yung nailabas mo din
yung.. yung ganun na the way na nagmura ka, para ano.. parang mawa- parang
maaalis yung pain mo sa sarili mo, so ‘yon yung for me, kasi ‘yon yung sagot ko
sa ‘aken okay lang.

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

79

DALUBHASAAN NG LUNGSOD NG LUCENA

2. What is your opinion about films that contain bad language and lewd
content?
nagpipintig yung ano nila diba? ‘yong tenga nila kasi hindi sa kanila normal yung
mga ganung-ganung words. So, prang ano lang ito, yung-yung pagmumura is a is-
strategy din lalo na panahon ngayon mga millenials na.. na parang naaaccept na rin
nila yung mga ganung-ganung… tema, e kasi nga naman presidente nga naman
natin nagmumura, e ‘yong mga-yung mga ganun kaya di ba? Kaya ginagaya na rin
ng ibang tao, so parang nagiging normalize na din sya sa panahon ngayon.

3. Opinion upon the movies using swearwords like “Tililing”?

Sa number three, opinion upon the movies using swearwords like “Tililing”? for
For example, may nagmura sa ‘yo , yung
hindi yung nakakarinig nung mura anong mararamdaman mo? May mas-
madedeptress ka maiistress ka, magagalit ka, e paano kung nakasanayan mo na
‘yon, e diba parang balewala nalang sa ‘yo. So, may maganda din syang
naidudulot para sa ‘tin.
Participant 6
1. What is your opinion when people swear?
Okay number one, what is your opinion when people swear? Para sa ‘kin kahit
nagmumura ako masama pa din kasi ano hindi naman lahat ng ano, hindi naman
lahat ng pagsasabihan natin ng mura.. magiging maganda ‘yong reaction sa kanila,
kasi depende ‘yon sa magiging reaction ng sasabihan mo, masama pa rin kasi sa
‘kin kasi.. halimbawa, kinakasanayan na natin ‘yong pagmumura, kahit-kahit
kanino ‘yan masasabi mo basta sanay kanang magmura, kahit kaninong tao , kahit

sinabi ‘yon pwedeng magkagulo, pwedeng .. maging,, ahmm.. may masamang
mangyari, masamang mangyari, ganun. ‘Yon ang reaction ko and para sa ‘kin
masama pa rin talaga ‘yon.

2. What is your opinion about films that contain bad language and lewd
content?
And number two, what is your opinion about films that contain bad language and
led content?

3. Opinion upon the movies using swearwords like “Tililing”?

And number three, opinion upon the movies using swearwords like “Tililing”? ‘di
ba ang.. director nito ay si Daryl Yap? Ang- ‘yong mga.. ang tililing, isa sya sa
interesting movie na inilabas ni Daryl Yap, maliban don sa.. aside don sa mga
nabuviews na kanyang inilabas na movie kasi when Daryl Yap, dun sya madalas
nakikita, napapanuod sa TV pero nga as like ahm- as (participant’s name) said na..
hindi.. hindi lahat hindi lahatt ano? Hindi lahat.. hindi lahat.. parang pili lang yung
pwedeng panuodan, ‘yon nga kasi nga sa- siguro sa content nung palabas, sa mga
SPG or mga.. masasamang salita na mga binabanggit ganon, pero interesting talaga
yung “Tililing” kasi parang ninonormalize nya don sa.. sa movie na mga paggamit
ng swearwords pero.. sometimes ay nakakasama din ‘yon para sa mga batang
makakapanuod kasi nga ano marami ng pwedeng mapanuoran ngayon e, in just
one click in the internet you can watch the movie kaya ano.. guidance din dapat ng
mga magulang sa mga pwedeng makapanuod ng mga tulad ng mga bata.
