Introductory Message

Welcome to TVL – IA (Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC I)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Kabankalan City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is a self-directed instructional material aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TVL – IA (Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC I) Activity Sheet will help
you facilitate the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential
Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between
you and the learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TVL – IA (Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC I) Activity Sheet is

developed to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning
material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent
learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then
perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

II. Background Information for Learners

SMAW TERMINOLOGIES

 Tack Weld- a Weld (generally short) made to hold parts of an element in

proper alignment until the final welds are made.
 Electrode- is another name for welding rod
 Correct Current- is the amount of current used based on diameter size of
electrode manufacturer recommend current appropriate for the size of
electrodes.
 Arc Strike- is caused by striking the arc either scratching for tapping method.
 Single Pass- pertain to one pass weld from the joint.
 Layer Pass - a multiple passes weld which applied to groove and fillet weld.
 Pass- a single longitudinal progression of a welding operation along a joint or
weld deposit. The result of a pass is a weld bead.

1
 Backing- are materials (metal, asbestos, carbon) place at root side of the
weld to facilitate the welder in obtaining a sound and good root penetration,
may be strops, backing rings (for pipes) and etc.
 Close Butt Joint- joining two pieces of metal with no gap to its edges.
 Open Butt Joint- joining two pieces of metal having gap to its edges equal to
the diameter of the electrode you are using.

1.2.1 Plate with Groove Preparation and fit-up

Learning Objectives
After reading this Information Sheet, you must be able to:
 Prepare and construct standard joint on section of mild steel plate
purposely following welding procedure in plate welding training.

1. Preparation
The joint is prepared by making a bevel as indicated in the figures.
Note: Remove burrs by grinding or filing

2. Fit-up

2.1 Rest two plates on the workbench with

the beveled edge. Place a spacing wire
of 3.2mm diameter on the beveled
edges. Align the two plates to form the
desired joint preparation.

2.2 Misalignment must not

exceed 1.6mm.

2
3. Tack weld

3.1 Tack weld by laying 12mm to 20mm tack weld. The tack must
penetrate the root so as to form a bead with penetration of 1.6mm high
at both ends.

3.2

Preset the Butt joint before

welding to counter distortion during welding.

3.3 Preset the Tee joint before welding to counter distortion during welding.

1.2.2

Perform Tack Welding

3
Identify the two kinds of tack weld

In carrying out some welding operation, very often the pieces have to be tack
welded. Tack welds are simple shorts section of weld beads measured ¼” to ½”
long used to maintain the proper root opening between the sections of metals being
welded (These tack welds are spaced along the seam and must be firmly fused into
the

joints.)

KINDS OF TACKING

1. Permanent tacking- is a type of tack weld measured about ¼” up to ½”

length. It used fir up temporarily the pieces of heavy metal being joined.
2. Semi-permanent Tacking- is a tack weld done only a very short bead. It
used to fit up temporarily the two light pieces of metal to be joined.
3. Bridge Tacking- is a method of tacking using stiffeners or backing plate to
keep both plates aligned.

In performing
tacking weld you must consider the following:

4
 Correct Electrode the choice electrode invoice such items; as position of the
weld properties of the base metal, diameter of electrode, types of joint and
current value without the right choice of electrode almost impossible to get to
result desired, regardless to the welding technique used.
 Correct Arc length as a rule, the length of arc should be approximately equal
to the diameter of the electrode. For example, an electrode 1/8” in diameter
should have arc length about 1/8’
 Correct Electrode Angle and Speed of Travel. Upon tack welding, the
welder should maintain a stable/ uniform speed in the portion of the metal to
be tacked weld together with proper travel angle and work angle.
 Correct Current. The welder must consider the current setting in order to
have good performances. If the current is set too high, the electrode melt too
fast and molten pool will be large regular and irregular on the other hand. If the
current is set too low, there is not enough heat to melt the base of metal and
the molten pool will be small. The result will fill up and will be irregular in
shape. More current is required for thick and heavy pieces than for light
sections.
The Properties of Base Metal. A top quality weld should be as strong as the parent
metal. This means that electrode to be used must produced a with approximately the
same mechanical properties as the parent metal.

1.3 Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The observation of health and safety precautions in welding operation is of

greatest importance. Your life and that of the others are more important than the job
you are doing.

1. Face shield welding is used to protect our

face and eyes from the arc rays and heat,
and the spatter from molten metal. The arc is
viewed through a filter which reduces the
intensity of radiation but allows a safe
amount of light to pass for viewing the weld
pool and end of the electrode.

1.1 Hand-held shield

allows only one hand
to work freely.

2. Leather jacket is made of chrome leather

and prevents the entry of sparks between our
clothes and body.

3. Leather apron is made of chrome leather and

provides a welder with complete protection of
his chest to mid calf from sparks and hot
metal.

6
4. Welding gloves/gauntlet is made of chrome
leather and protects our hands from heat,
spatter, and radiations.

5. Clear face shield is best for general protection

because it can be worn under an arc welding
helmet

6. Leggings are made from leather to protect

the legs and feet.

7. Protective sleeves are made from leather to

protect the arms.

8. Protective cover all are made from light

asbestos coated with aluminum to protect
the whole body during welding.

7
9. Welding cushions are made from
leather for sitting and kneeling beside the
work piece as protection against cold.

10. Welding spats are made of chrome

leather and protects our feet from
spatter.

11. Safety Shoes-have heat resistant soles

and impact resistant toes. Some safety
shoes have metal in soles, while others
protect workers from different types of
electrical hazards.

12. Safety goggles- are used when grinding

and chipping off slag.

13. Respirators- is an apparatus worn over

the mouth and nose or the entire face to
prevent the inhalation of dust, smoke, or
other noxious substances.

Full face respirator
