1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 This work procedure has been developed in order to outline the main work
operations and performance of associated quality control activities during concreting.

7.3.5 Preparation

7.3.6.2 Deformed reinforcement bars shall be fabricated to the shapes and dimensions
indicated on the Construction Drawings and in compliance with applicable
provisions of ACI 315, ACI 318 M-83 and CRSI Manual of Standard Practice.

7.3.6.3 Plastic (PVC) chairs, spacers and hangers shall be spaced in accordance with ACI
315 and ACI 318 M-83.

7.3.6.4 Fusion bonded epoxy-coated reinforcement may be moved as required to avoid


interference with other reinforcement steel, conduits, blockouts, or embedded
items. If reinforcing is moved more than one bar diameter or enough to exceed the
specified placement tolerances, the resulting arrangement of the reinforcement
shall be subject to review by the CLIENT’s representative.

7.3.6.5 Reinforcement shall be installed so that the following minimum concrete cover
shall be provided for reinforcement.:
 Against ground or exposed to weather. 75 mm
 Not exposed to ground or weather, beams, girders and columns. 50 mm
 Slab and walls. 25 mm

7.3.6.6 Dowels or reinforcing bars left exposed for connection with future work shall be
FBE coated. Damaged coatings shall be repaired. When placing new concrete,
dowels or bar extensions shall be cleaned of loose grout, concrete particles or
other covering which might weaken the bond by saturating with water and washed
with the mortar of no leaner consistency of that of concrete to be placed.

7.4 Pre-Pouring

7.4.1 When a structure is ready for pouring the Civil Engineer shall issue to the QC
Department a Request for Inspection approximately 24 hours prior to pouring. The
Engineer shall ensure that the items listed on checklist are checked prior to the
inspection time stated.

7.5 Blinding Concrete

7.5.1 Pre-Blinding Activities

7.5.1.1 The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall check and make sure that the following
pre-blinding activities have been fulfilled prior to placement of blinding concrete.
 Check Base Compaction QC Released.
 Check setting out complete and screed rails installed.

7.5.2 Inspection of Blinding Operations

7.5.2.1 Routine surveillance inspection of transport, placement and leveling operations


shall be carried out by the Civil Quality Control Inspector to ensure that they are in
accordance with the specifications requirements.

7.6 Inspection of Embedded Items in Reinforced Concrete Structures.


7.6.1 The Civil Engineer shall check the placement and position of all embedded items
against the current construction drawing. The Civil Engineer is also responsible for
checking the position of the embedded items after concrete placement to ensure
no displacement has occurred.

7.6.1.1 The Civil Quality Control Inspector and the CLIENT’s representative shall inspect,
at the Pre-Pour inspection, all embedded items to ensure that the approved type
and number are installed within the specified tolerances and record their approval
by initialing release on to signify final inspection release for the structure to be
poured. The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall liaise with the
Mechanical/Electrical Quality Control Inspectors to assure that all required tests
and inspections on any embedded pipes and electrical conduits are completed and
are in compliance with standards and codes.

7.6.1.2 The Civil Foreman shall issue to the Civil Engineer a pouring schedule stating all
relevant information required by those on the distribution list and shall be submitted
not later than 48 hours prior to the pour, taking place.

7.6.1.3 Giving a minimum period of 48 hours prior to the intended pour taking place, the
Civil Engineer shall issue a copy of the concrete pouring schedule to the site
parties identified below:
 Construction Manager
 Supervisor (Civil)
 Quality Manager
 Controls Manager
 Ready Mix Batch Plant

7.6.1.4 On receipt of the concrete pouring schedule the QC Department shall supply the
CLIENT with a copy, together with a Request for inspection (RFI) as notification of
intended concrete placement

7.6.1.5 Notes:
 Wall or column forms should not be closed until the Civil Quality Control
Inspector has inspected the steel reinforcement.
 Cleaning of tie wires, nails and wood shall be checked prior to any
concrete placement.
 Excavation shall be kept dry during the progress of the works, except for the
wetting required prior to placing concrete.
 Reinforcement at the time concrete is placed shall be free from mud, oil,
loose mill, rust, scale and from any coating which may destroy or reduce the
bond between concrete and steel.
 Form oil applied prior to pouring shall be a non-staining type, which shall
allow field applied paints to adhere to concrete surfaces without failing.
 All formwork releasing agents shall not effect bonding of any materials to be
applied to the concrete surface at a later stage.

7.7 “ Concrete Pour Card”, Sampling and routine Testing

7.7.1 Concrete Pour Card


7.7.1.1 No concrete shall be mixed until the Quality Control Department has released
installation works and the Civil Engineer has been notified.

7.7.2 Concrete Receipt

7.7.2.1 The Civil QC Inspector assigned to a specific site pour shall check the truck
Delivery Note to establish that the correct delivery has been made (i.e. mix type
and location)

7.7.2.2 The 3rd party field technician shall monitor concrete receipt, conduct the necessary
field tests sampling of fresh concrete and record the result.

7.7.2.3 The 3rd party field technician shall immediately report any field test that indicates
that the concrete may be deficient to the Civil Quality Control Inspector and shall
reject said concrete delivery.

7.7.3 Sampling for Concrete

7.7.3.1 The 3rd party field technician shall obtain samples from a different batch of concrete
on a random basis, avoiding any selection of the test batch other than by a number
selected at random prior to commencement of concrete placement.

7.7.3.2 Samples of fresh concrete shall normally be obtained form the chute of the truck
mixer during discharge, unless otherwise instructed by the Civil Quality Control
Inspector. Slump and cylinder test samples shall be taken at the discharge point of
the concrete placement hose when concrete pumps are used.

7.7.3.3 Referring ACI-301 clause 16.3.4.4. each sample set shall represent 35 cubic
meters (50 cubic yards) of poured concrete. 0.3 M 3 of concrete is a recommended
volume of one sample set to prepare the following testing samples:-
 Air content test (if required) one sample
 Concrete strength and cube density seven cylinders
 Slump and concrete temperature two slumps and take average
temperature
 Concrete density one sample

7.7.4 Field Testing

7.7.4.1 The field tests for slump, concrete temperature, concrete density, ambient air
temperature and air content (adopting ASTM-C231 method with type B meter)
tests shall be performed by the 3rd party field technician on site to the required
testing standards mentioned in the Testing Matrix clause 7.7.5 below and the
results shall be recorded.

7.7.4.2 Concrete cylinder sample set of seven cylinders shall be marked with the pour card
number, the casting date and approved designated reference number for each
cylinder sample of the set. Such samples shall be transferred to the laboratory for
curing and testing as per the Testing Matrix clause 7.7.5 below.

7.7.4.3 Additional testing shall be carried out as and when instructed by the Civil Quality
Control Inspector. Such samples and tests shall be additional to the routine
samples and tests.
7.7.5. The Samples and Testing Matrix

7.7.6 Frequency of Sampling and Testing

7.7.6.1 The frequency of sampling and testing for all tests mentioned in clause 7.7.5 shall
be initially at the rate of one sample set per 35 M 3 of poured concrete. After 15 test
results have been obtained, then the 95% confidence range shall be calculated,
providing the maximum values obtained in the confidence range are less that the
specified values then the frequency of testing shall be reduced to one test per day
for the quantity produced of that type of concrete.

7.7.7. Laboratory Testing

7.7.7.1 After sampling and initial on-site curing, the cylinders shall then be transported to
the laboratory with the minimum vibration and moisture loss possible.

7.7.7.2 The concrete cylinder samples obtained on site shall be tested for compressive
strength in the laboratory as per the Testing Matrix indicated in 7.7.5.

7.7.8 Testing for Compressive strength of concrete cylinders samples.

All cylinders shall be tested for density and compressive strength at an age of 7
and 28 days in accordance with ASTM-C39. The actual test results from laboratory
shall be attached to report.

7.7.9 External Laboratory Testing (Optional)


7.7.9.1 The following tests are to be carried out at an 3 rd party testing laboratory due to the
testing complexity:-

 Testing of chloride content in concrete shall be carried out in accordance with


ASTM-C1152. The external testing certificate of the results shall be attached to
and the results recorded in the boxes provided.
 Testing of sulphate content in fresh concrete shall be carried out.

7.7.9.2 In accordance with BS-1881 part 124 the testing certificate(s) issued by the 3 rd
party testing laboratory shall be attached and the results recorded and will be
provided.

7.7.9.3 The results of all concrete tests recorded together with the test certificate
attachments shall be maintained on site by the QC department. The frequency of
these tests shall be at the discretion of the Civil QC Inspector.

7.8 Structural concrete

7.8.1 Concrete Placement

7.8.1.1 All concrete shall be deposited as close as possible to its final position, and shall
be brought up in layers approximately parallel to the construction joint planes.

7.8.1.2 Concrete shall be vibrated in layers of approximately 0.30m with each layer being
no thicker than can be effectively compacted with the equipment being used.

7.8.1.3 Layers shall not be placed so that they from feathers edges, or placed on a
previous layer, which has taken its initial set. To comply with this requirement, a
layer may be started prior to completion of the preceding layer.

7.8.1.4 All the concrete in a single bay or pour shall be placed in a continuous operation,
and shall be carefully worked around and between cast-in-items, rebar, etc.

7.8.1.5 Particular car shall be taken at areas containing high concentrations of rebar, using
smaller diameter vibrators where necessary.

7.8.1.6 All works shall be completed on each batch of concrete until initial set commences.
The concrete shall not be disturbed after it has set.

7.8.2 Discharge

7.8.2.1 Care shall be taken to avoid segregation of concrete during discharge. This shall
be prevented by use of chutes, down pipes, trunking, baffles or other appropriate
equipment (such equipment shall not be made of aluminum).

7.8.2.2 Concrete shall not be dropped freely where reinforcing will cause segregation nor
shall it be dropped freely more than 1metre.

7.8.3 Interruptions to Placing


7.8.3.1 Unforeseen or unscheduled interruptions in the placement of concrete shall call for
the following actions to be taken:

 The Construction Manager, in liaison with the CLIENT, shall assess the
situation to decide whether or not to stop the pour and form a construction joint.

7.8.3.2 Before concreting is resumed, all damaged, un-compacted concrete, featheredges


and other undesirable features shall be cut out to leave a clean sound surface.

 The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall inspect construction joints before
concreting is allowed to restart.

7.8.4 Placing of Concrete In Hot Weather

7.8.4.1 Hot weather concreting shall apply when anticipated maximum daily job site
temperature is higher than 85 0F (300C). In no case shall the temperature of
concrete when placed exceed 900F (320C).

7.8.4.2 The above activities shall be performed in accordance with AC1-305 R.

7.9 Form Striking, Concrete Surface Inspection and Repairs

7.9.1 Formwork and prop striking times.

7.9.1.1 The minimum formwork and prop striking times shall be as per the requirements of
the project specifications, providing that curing operations start immediately. The
Civil Engineer shall keep the civil Quality Control Inspector informed with the
formwork striking program.

7.9.2 Concrete Surface Inspection

7.9.2.1 After removal of the formwork and subsequent wetting, the Civil Quality Control
Inspector shall inspect the concrete surface and promptly notify the Civil Engineer
of any areas requiring remedial works.

7.9.2.2 The concrete structure shall be repaired and re-inspected as and when required.

7.9.3 Concrete Surface Repairs and Release

7.9.3.1 No repairs are to be made until the Civil Quality Control Inspector has inspected
the surface after form striking. Major repairs with exposed steel reinforcement shall
be conducted prior to the completed curing period.

7.9.3.2 Areas requiring remedial works and repairs, shall be repaired as per chapter 9 of
ACI-301.

7.9.3.3 In progress inspection during the application of repair materials, shall be conducted
by the Civil Quality Control Inspector, who shall sign the final release when the
surface repairs are complete and conforming to the project specifications.

7.10 Curing and Protection


7.10.1 Lean mix shall be cured for a period of 2 days. Curing and protection to structural
concrete shall conform to the requirements of the project specifications and the
relevant standards referred to in section ‘4’.

7.10.1.1 The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall immediately notify the Civil Engineer of
any corrective actions. The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall issue a corrective
action for all curing deficiencies, the Quality Control Manager shall close such
actions after deficiencies have been corrected.

7.10.2 Concrete Floor Finishes and Sealant

7.10.2.1 Finishing shall be carried out using power or hand trowels depending on the finish
required and the area involved, additional trowelling shall be completed by hand
after the surface has sufficiently hardened.

7.10.2.2 The surface shall be thoroughly consolidated by hand trawling operation. Shall be
free from any trowel marks, and uniform in texture and appearance.

7.10.3 Joints/Sealants

7.10.3.1 Where movement joints are indicated on the approved construction drawings, an
approved flexible joint filler shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s
recommendations.

7.10.3.2 The type of filler shall be as recommended by the joint compound manufacturer for
condition of use.

7.10.3.3 Joint sealant shall conform to the requirements of project specification

7.10.4 Execution

7.10.4.1 All surfaces shall be cleaned of dirt, grease, oil, loose materials and any other
contaminations that will affect bonding of the compound.

7.10.4.2 Facing surfaces adjacent to joints shall be protected prior to applying joint
compounds.

7.10.4.3 Compounds shall be applied with an air gun to form flexible sealed expansion
joints, as indicated on the approved construction drawings.

7.10.4.4 All excess compounds shall be removed from surfaces after curing.

7.10.4.5 The Civil QC Inspector shall carry out visual inspections of all sealant joints, results
of this inspection shall be recorded.

7.10.5 Application of Coating to Concrete Structures

7.10.5.1 The Civil Engineer shall check that the surface is satisfactory for coating
application.

7.10.5.3 All concrete surfaces shall be coated in accordance with the requirements of the
project specifications.
7.10.5.3 The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall make in-process inspections to assure that
the coating is applied in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations and
the requirements of the project specifications.

7.11 Finishing/Final Inspection

7.11.1 Site shall be cleaned of debris and construction materials etc. Civil QC Inspector
shall carry out finishing / final inspection.

7.11.2 The results of these inspections shall be recorded.

8.0 RECORDS

8.1 All records relevant to the above procedure shall be retained by the Quality Control
department in the site office, for the duration of the project, before being handed
over to the CLIENT in accordance with the requirements of the contract
documents. Copies of all records shall be made and transferred to the Head Office
where they shall be retained for the guarantee period of the contract.

9.0 SAFETY

9.1 Ensure work permit is valid if applicable.

9.3 Ensure areas of excavation are properly identified at night.
