A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
- Know what is “A Shawl for Anita” all about.
- Determine the moral of the story “A Shawl for Anita”.
- Narrate events (EN7RC-IV-b-10.5)

A. Preparatory Activity
- Greetings
The teacher will greet the students a good morning.
- Prayer
The teacher will ask one student to lead the prayer.
- Cleanliness of the classroom
The teacher will ask the students to pick up the pieces of paper and sit properly.

B. Developmental Activities
Motivation
The teacher will introduce the game called “Code It”. The teacher will be flashing
a number code, each number in that code is equal to the letter from the alphabet. For
example, is 1 is equal to the letter A and 2 is equal to the letter B. under each code has a
given meaning. The task is, the students need to know what the hidden words behind that
code are.
Activity
The class will be divided into 5 groups. Each group will present their
activity:
Group 1: choose a scene from “A Shawl for Anita” and make role playing.
Group 2: Summarize the “A Shawl for Anita” then sing it, choose a tune from an
existing song.
Group 3: Illustrate the moral of the story.
Group 4: Make a short poem about the characters of the story.

Analysis
 Why does the mother keep on knitting a shawl for Anita?
 Why does Anita keep on requesting something from the mother despite
her mother’s condition?
 Among the characters, who is the impatient and jealous? Why?

Abstraction
 Who narrates the story?
 Who are the characters in the story?
 What actions did the mother does?
 Who is the child that the mother take care of the most?

The story “A Shawl for Anita” is all about the love of a mother to her children.
The narrator of the story is the middle child who is jealous of her sister Anita because her mother
has a soft heart especially to Anita because Anita is a sickly person. Then when their mother
became old and Anita is married, her mother never stopped pampering Anita. One day, Anita
asked her mother to knit a shawl for her, the middle child heard it and she became angry because
she thinks that it is a burden to their old mother to knit a shawl. Until Anita said to her that “I
did it for Mother, that shawl is giving her a reason to live. She was wasting away, didn’t you
notice? She felt so useless because shad nothing to do, no matter how small. Mother is one
person who prefers to live her life working. If she stops working, she will stop living.” Now, the
middle child understands why her mother is keep on knitting a shawl for Anita even though she
is old.

Direction: Arrange the following sentences according to the story “A Shawl for
Anita”. writ
________1. She was good at knitting. Her job tided us over until the eldest got a
diploma of teaching.
________2. She was sickly, and Mother willingly indulged her. My sister’s
whimpers never irked her.
________3. My mother who had always been a frail woman was much thinner
now. Anita who was married by now had never stopped being pampered.
________4. My heart went out to her every time I saw her painfully knitting the
needles into the yarn.
________5. I never wanted to see Mother lift a finger. She was too old to work,
and we wanted to save the burden of doing even the lightest household chores.
________6. Knitting the shawl might have been an agony for Mother, but she
never showed any pain.
________7. Anita touched my arm and in a gentle voice she said, “I did it for
Mother, that shawl is giving her a reason to live. She was wasting away, didn’t you
notice? She felt so useless because shad nothing to do, no matter how small. Mother is
one person who prefers to live her life working. If she stops working, she will stop
living.”
