Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (born 23 March 1953) is an Indian billionaire entrepreneur.She is the


executive chairperson and founder of Biocon Limited and Biocon Biologics Limited, a
biotechnology company based in Bangalore, India and the former chairperson of Indian
Institute of Management, Bangalore. In 2014, she was awarded the Othmer Gold Medal for
outstanding contributions to the progress of science and chemistry.She is on the Financial
Times’ top 50 women in business list.In 2019, she was listed as the 68th most powerful
woman in the world by Forbes.She was named EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year
2020.She is married to John Shaw.

Kiran Mazumdar was born on 23 March 1953 in Bangalore, Karnataka state,to Gujarati
parents.She was educated at Bangalore's Bishop Cotton Girl's High School, graduating in
1968. She then attended Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, a women's college offering
pre-university courses as an affiliate of Bangalore University.She studied biology and
zoology, graduating from Bangalore University with a bachelor's degree in zoology in
1973.Mazumdar hoped to go to medical school, but was not able to obtain a scholarship.

Her journey started 40 years ago because of gender bias. She call herself an accidental
entrepreneur. She started her company out of a garage. She knew it was going to be a
challenge but she had the determination to succeed. She was young, had no experience and
no collateral. She faced problems in recruitment because people were not ready for women.
She had a huge credibility challenge everywhere”,
However, she was soon joined by people who trusted her mission and supported her in the
same and made Biocon reach the position it is at today.

Kiran explained how when she started up, she faced a lot of difficulty in hiring people
because she was young, had no experience and was not credible. With time, she managed
to find the right set of people who helped her build and scale her business.

Women are entrepreneurial by nature


Shaw emphasised on the fact that women have entrepreneurship in their DNA. They need to
find courage to pursue it. She is a firm believer of the fact that women can double up the
country’s GDP if they materialise their entrepreneurial dreams.
“My journey has been of taking risks, leverage technical and innovative Indian talent base to
make global impact.” she said.

She takes a lot of pride in the fact that her business managed to create 10,000 jobs because
she believes that job creation is an important part of entrepreneurship.
Keep experimenting
She also opined that every entrepreneur should keep reinventing to stay relevant.
She said, “Ask yourself – What do I want to do with this business? What will I be
remembered for? What is my mission?”

Kiran highlighted the fact that she always believed in giving back to communities by
investing in them. “Your communities must enjoy the fruit of your prosperity”, she believes.
