Care of Infants and Children

Learning Log
Unit V: Care of a Child with Infectious Process

Week 6

Direction: Complete concisely and honestly each statement corresponds to this week lesson
topic.

I used to think that this course will help me on how to give care in children, infants and other
stages of being a child, specially to give care to a child with infectious Process.

Now I know that Mono, or infectious mononucleosis, refers to a group of symptoms usually
caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It typically occurs in teenagers, but you can get it at any
age. The virus is spread through saliva, which is why some people refer to it as “the kissing
disease.” Maternal passive immunity, or natural passive immunity, is immunity passed along
from mother to child. Before the child is born, antibodies are passed through the placenta to
protect the child from illness.

Roseola infantum is caused by human herpesvirus-6. Typical symptoms include high fever that
begins suddenly and sometimes a rash that develops after the temperature returns to normal.
Two to three days after you first notice measles symptoms, you may start to see tiny spots inside
the mouth, all over the cheeks. These spots are usually red with blue-white centers. They’re
called Koplik’s spots, named for pediatrician Henry Koplik who first described the early
symptoms of measles in 1896. Koplik’s spots should fade as the other measles symptoms
disappear.

Mumps is a viral infection that primarily affects saliva-producing (salivary) glands that are
located near your ears. Mumps can cause swelling in one or both of these glands.
Mumps can sometimes affect other glands in the body, namely the nervous system and the
testicles. The most common complication of mumps is testicular inflammation. This
inflammatory condition, medically called orchitis, affects boys (who have been through puberty)
or adults.

Causing an intense need to scratch, pruritus is described as an unpleasant sensation that has a
large impact on patients’ quality of life. It is a common and distressing symptom of many
dermatological, systemic and psychological disorders. Tetanus is different from other vaccine-
preventable diseases because it does not spread from person to person. The bacteria are usually
found in soil, dust, and manure and enter the body through breaks in the skin — usually cuts or
puncture wounds caused by contaminated objects.

However, I am not sure if I can understand all the topic for this course. There are some topics
that for me very hard to understand. But by repeating reading, little by little I understand other
topics.

I hope/plan to read constantly the unit V module that given in canvas, for me to learn a lot

I found the activity downloading my module easy because of the good internet connection.

I found the activity making my case study for this week difficult because I need a lot of source to
write the rationale. It is hard also for me to understand the topic for this week.

I hope there would be a change in this kind of learnings because its hard to adjust and to
understand the topic by my own understanding.

Overall, I feel blessed and satisfied because I am able to understand and to comply my
requirements on time, even there are many hindrances like internet connection and understanding
the topic.
