LECTURETTE:
What is Self-Awareness?
► Self-Awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and
how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don’t
align with your internal standards (Forsey, 2018).
► Self-Awareness is having a clear perception of your
personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts,
.
beliefs, motivation, and emotions. It allows you to
. understand other people, how they perceive you, your
.
attitude, and your responses to them at the moment
.
(Pathway to Happiness, 2005).
.

.
Two Categories of Self-
Awareness
a. Internal self-awareness-
represents how clearly we see
our values, passions,
aspirations, fit with our
environment, reactions
(including thoughts, feelings,
.
behaviors, strengths, and
. weaknesses), and impact on
.
others.
.
b. External self-awareness- how
others view yourself

Self-awareness and Mental
Ability
• Mental ability is manifested through the intelligent behavior
of an individual. The individual with average intellectual
ability will have the capacities of observing,
understanding, learning, thinking, remembering, and
dealing with situations effectively.
• It is the ability to understand the facts and significance of
your behavior.
• It can be well understood with its two different kinds:
.

. 1. Primary Mental Abilities

. 2. Secondary Mental Abilities
.

.
Kinds of Mental Ability
Primary Mental Ability - are groups of related intellectual skills organized into
constructs. The following constructs are:
1. Verbal Ability demonstrated skill to comprehend and communicate effectively with words.
2. Word Fluency the ability to list words rapidly in certain designated categories.
3. Numerical Ability as involved in solving arithmetic computation problems and relatively
simple word problems.
4. Spatial Intelligence the ability to mentally manipulate objects in space and to imagine
them in different locations and positions.
. 5. Reasoning thinking in which logical processes of an inductive or deductive character are
. used to conclude from facts or premises.
.
6. Memory the ability to retain information or a representation of past experiences.
. 7. Perceptual Speed individual’s speed in comparing figures or symbols, scanning to find
. figures or symbols, and performing other simple tasks involving visual perception.
.
Kinds of Mental Ability
Secondary Mental Ability - are broader intellectual skills that include and organize
the primary abilities (Fitzgibbon, Lashley, & Golden, 2020). It has two kinds which are:
1. Crystallized Intelligence – includes the ability to display comprehension, expressive thought,
and understanding is often tested by verbal measures such as vocabulary, analogies, and
comprehension questions. The higher this score is, the more likely the individual has been
able to integrate knowledge in an advanced manner.
2. Fluid Intelligence – includes the ability to understand patterns, discover relationships and
foresee implications of those patterns and relationships. Problem-solving, reasoning, use of
induction, and intellectual flexibility are hallmarks of this type of ability.
.

.
Fluid Intelligence is extremely useful when the individual is faced with new situations and
.
scenarios. At the same time, Crystallized Intelligence is often believed to be strongly
.
impacted by the individual’s education level, life experiences and exposers, and culture.
.
How to Improve Your Mental
Ability?
As a student, keeping your mind sharp and staying focused are vitally
crucial for successfully passing the course. Here are some ways you can try
to improve your mental ability:
1. Learn a new activity. The brain loves a challenge, and learning a new activity that requires
concentration is a great way to strengthen your cognitive abilities.
2. Focus on one task at a time. Your brain is capable of bouncing between one task and
another, but it is unlikely that it will be fully focused on either task.
3. Keep your body healthy. A healthy body makes for a healthy mind!
4. Read more, watch less TV. Many studies have shown that reading improves memory recall,
empathy, concentration, and creativity. It expands your knowledge and vocabulary too.
. 5. Repeat, repeat, repeat. The surest way to remember something is to repeat it – over and
.
over again.
.
6. Think positively. The average human brain has around 50 000 thoughts per day, so your way
of thinking can have a huge impact on your mental outlook and emotional wellness.
. 7. Treasure your relationships. Your relationships with family and friends are key factors in
. keeping your mind sharp.

Self-awareness and Emotional
Intelligence (measured by EQ)
▪ Emotional intelligence can be defined as the cluster of abilities that
allow us to recognize and regulate emotions in ourselves and others
(Goleman, 2001).
▪ According to the Emotional Intelligence Theory, there are five
components of it: Self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills,
empathy, and motivation.
.

. ▪ Self-awareness is the building block upon which the rest of the

.
components are built. It is the first step to build your emotional
intelligence.

The Emotionally Intelligent
Person
Emotionally intelligent people engage in several habits and
behaviors, and here are some:
✓ pay attention to what they are feeling.
✓ understand how other people feel.
✓ are able to regulate their emotions.
✓ are motivated.
✓ have great social skills.
. ✓ are willing and able to discuss feelings with others.
. ✓ are able to identify the underlying causes of their emotions
. correctly.
. Check out these key things that emotionally intelligent people do so that you can try to
make some of these a habit in your own day-to-day life.
.

.
1. Write down your thoughts to help you improve self-awareness.
2. Commit to being accountable.
3. Practice being calm. Think before you act or say anything.
4. Stay hopeful and optimistic.
5. Try to see other people’s perspectives.
6. Pay attention to the unsaid words – body language.
7. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes.
8. Improve your communication skills
9. Learn to take criticisms and give praise due to others.
.

. It is essential to improve your emotional intelligence because emotions guide

. every decision we make. In a study of Ph.D.’s from EIConsurtium, social and
emotional intelligence were significantly more critical to professional success and
.
prestige than Intelligence Quotient (IQ) alone and has been consequently linked to
.
persons with successful careers.

.
what motivates you. Knowing your interests can lead you to the
careers and educational possibilities that are most meaningful for
.

.
you.

• Social Interest: Those interests by which a person’s sphere increase
outside the home and neighborhood. He comes to contact with
more people.
• Recreational Interest: Recreation contributes to mental health,
and healthy people have this kind of interest. Most adolescents
have this kind of interest.
• Personal interest: Every person, whether boy or girl, adult or old,
.
has some kinds of personal interests.
.

.
• Vocational Interest: Vocational interest is when people choose
their vocation or want to take such a vocation. The area of
vocational is vast. A person alone cannot acquire all kinds of skills.
.

Skill differs from person to person.

Importance of Self-Awareness to
Once Success
1. It can make us more proactive, boost our acceptance, and encourage positive self-
development (Sutton, 2016).
2. Self-awareness allows us to see things from the perspective of others, practice self-

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

.
Synthesis
• Self-awareness becomes woven into the fabric of who you are and
emerges at different points depending on your situation and personality.
• Self-awareness can be obtained from how we view ourselves and how
others view us.
• Self-awareness is the first step to build emotional intelligence.
• Self-awareness includes identifying one’s interest that is the basis of a future
career and educational possibilities that are most meaningful for you.
• Self-awareness is important because when we have a better
understanding of ourselves, we can experience ourselves as unique and
separate individuals. We are then empowered to make changes and build
.
on our areas of strength and identify areas where we would like to make
improvements.
.

A little extra self-awareness can be of great benefit to anyone with the will
.

. to improve.
.

.
OUTPUT
• Refer to the Four Self-Awareness Archetypes diagram
(Slide 8) and evaluate what archetype you are and why.
Just write 3-5 sentences to explain yourself. Then, share
your answer here on this google form link:
https://forms.gle/wccBiQAERdSvVUeF8.
• For example, “I assess myself to be a SEEKER for I am still
discovering more about myself and how others see me,
this makes me feel ______”
• Be honest and be yourself to be reminded of this session.
.

.
Key Message:
“Being self-aware is not about identifying
all your faults, but about understanding
your motivators, your impact, what you
do well, and where you struggle.
Ultimately, self-awareness is the gateway
to personal power, satisfaction, healthy
.
.
relationships, and success. And the more
.
self-aware you are, the less self-
.
.
conscious you will be.”
.
Source: https://deodentalgroup.com/self-conscious-vs-self-aware/
Key Message:
Since you can understand and accept
yourself, it will be easier for you to adjust to
different situations, overcome your
weaknesses, and use your strengths to cope
with your daily struggles in life. Self-
.
.
awareness is a dynamic process.
.

.
Key Message:
According to the story of the Green Tail, if somebody says
you have a green tail, that person is crazy. If two people say you
have a green tail, it is a conspiracy. If seven people say you
have a green tail, you turn around and look. It does not mean
they are correct. It’s just that they must have a reason in thinking
the way they do, and you need to explore that reason.
Feedback must be constructive in any value. Its purpose is
. to help, not to hurt. It should be specific and focused on
. behavior that can be changed. Feedback should also be
.
clarified to avoid misunderstanding. It must accentuate the
. positive and eliminate the negative.
.

.
Key Message:
The capacity to learn is
a gift; The ability to
learn is a skill; The
.
.

willingness to learn is a
choice. – Brain Herbert
