History
In 1947 dire necessity of establishing a state owned zoological
garden was felt. A zoo park was being started at High court
premises of Dhaka with a limited number of spotted deer, monkeys
and few other species of animals. A master plan was approved with
a view to establish a zoological garden at Mirpur in 1960.

Established : June 23rd 1974


Area :186-acre (75 ha)

The name of Zoo has been changed 5th February 2015 from Dhaka
Zoo to Bangladesh National Zoo

It is a center for healthy recreation of peoples of all
ages and corners. Calm environment of the zoo
attracts people to gate relief from the bustle and
monotony of urban life. About 4 million visitors visit
Bangladesh National Zoo every year.
Zoo Activities

A particularly popular activity at Dhaka Zoo is going for an


elephant-back ride, or for those who have a fear of heights,
horse-back rides are also available. A visit to Dhaka Zoo is
not only entertaining, but educational too, as visitors get to
know more about animals found in Bangladesh, as well as
animals from other parts of the world.

Earning Source
Earning source is mainly Entrance fee, Zoo museum entrance fee, Car parking fee, Film shooting in the Zoo
premises, Fishing, Picnic spot, Sale of Zoo Animals and others Presently spotted deer are sold on cost of
Tk. 70,000/-BDT per animals and Peafowl per pair Tk. 50,000/= after getting permission from CCF (Chief
Conservator of Forest). Jackfruits and other seasonal fruits are also sold in auction.

Future Development

Bangladesh National Zoo is undergoing a


comprehensive master planning process.The
Facilities Master Plan will guide the Zoo's
facilities renewal, which will help the Zoo
achieve its mission of providing leadership in
animal care, science, education, and
sustainabilit
The zoo is currently home to 2,150 animals from 134
species.
58 species of mammals, including elephants, cheetahs,
rhinos, zebras, waterbucks, otters, hyenas, deer,
giraffes, impala, black bears, tapirs, hippos, lions, many
species of monkeys, chimpanzees, baboons, and Animals
Bengal tigers. More than 1500 birds representing 91
species, including peacocks, rhea, African gray parrots,
cassowary, owls, ostrich, emus, teals, finches, babblers,
owls, vultures, and eagles. The two lakes at the zoo
also.host migratory water birds each winter.
13 species of reptiles including snakes and crocodiles,
28 species of fish.
