NOTE: Your goals must relate to acquiring or improving a skill, not getting a job. You must list 3 different goals that you want to work on. You can
outline goals that are immediate to your actions for term break, practicum, or long-term.
GOALS 1:

My first primary goal is to upgrade my existing skills that are required in the Canadian marketplaces, and this can be achieved in the
practicum.

GOALS 2:

The job profiles in which I am interested demand good communication skills and the ability to work in teams. I know very well that
communication skills are one of my strengths and want to make advantage of it.

GOALS 3:

Lastly, I want an entry-level position that will help me to enhance my problem-solving skills during my practicum and this will help me in
my long-term career.

STEP 4 – CREATING A GOAL SETTING PLAN “SMART GOALS”

Here you plan the steps you need to take to put your plan into action.
Use all you have learnt about your skills, interests and values together with the information you have gathered about the world of work to create
your plan. NOTE: You will need to set goals for 2 of the 3 goals you listed above. Each goal should have a minimum of 3 action in order to achieve
it.
Begin by asking yourself:

JULY 4, 2022 CAREER CAREER PLANNING TEMPLATE 6

• What actions/steps will help me achieve my work, training and career goals?
• Where can I get help?
• Who will support me?
• At the end of this step you will have:
• a plan to help you explore your options further (e.g. work experience, or more research); or
• a plan which sets out the steps to help you achieve your next learning or work goal.
• Decide which step is relevant for you right now and start from there.

A SMART goal is specific, measurable, achievable, results- focused and time-bound.

Specific goals must clearly state what is to be achieved and by whom. You should ask yourself: why, where and how it is to be achieved?

A measurable goal should answer the question: How will you know that you have accomplished your objective?

Goals should be challenging and a stretch, yet achievable given your knowledge, skills and abilities.

SMART goals should be results-focused on short- or long-term outcomes (not activities) that are aligned with the end career goals.

A time-bound goal should create a practical sense of urgency and should dictate when the goal should be completed by.
