CLASS: IV
Ls.11 Water Notes

I. FILL IN THE BLANKS.

1. The glaciers trap more than half of the fresh water present on the Earth.
2. Rivers are the largest source of fresh water.
3. Liquid water becomes ice when it freezes.
4. The rivers Ganga and Yamuna flow from the Himalayan mountain ranges.
5. Artificial canals bring water from reservoirs and rivers to the agricultural fields.

II. NAME THE FOLLOWING:

1. The process by which water changes into water vapour on heating. Evaporation
2. Large waterbodies bounded on all sides by land. Lakes
3. The water bodies that are located deep below the Earth’s surface. Underground
Water
4. Electricity generated with the help of flowing water. Hydroelectricity
5. A disease caused due to water pollution. Typhoid
6. A natural source of water found in desert regions. Oasis

III. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

Q1. What are the various sources of water?

A. The different sources of water are rain, rivers, lakes, ponds, seas, oceans, snow,
glaciers, wells, tube wells etc.

Q2. What is the difference between fresh water and saline water?

A. Water on earth can be classified as saline and fresh water:

Fresh water is the water found in lakes, rivers, ponds, streams, well etc that has much
lower amount of salt .

Saline water is the water found in seas and oceans which contains high amount of salt.

Q3. What is potable water?

A. The water which is suitable for drinking is called potable water.

Q4. What is water pollution? List its causes.

A. When water becomes unsuitable for use due to various human activities and other
factors, it is called water pollution. Main causes of water pollution are as follows:
 Industrial wastes, agricultural wastes like pesticides, fertilizers etc and domestic wastes
dumped into water bodies.
 Bathing, washing clothes and utensils in water bodies.
 Spilling of oil into the sea from oil tankers .

Q5. What are the different states of water?

A. Water can be found in three states: solid, liquid and gas

 Ice: Ice is the solid form of water

 Water: Water is the liquid form and has no definite shape.
 Water vapour: Water vapour is the gaseous form of water.

Q6. Draw and explain water cycle.

A. The change in the state of water occurs continuously in nature.

*Due to the heat of the sun water from different water bodies like lakes, rivers, ponds,
oceans etc changes into water vapour. This process is called evaporation.

*The water vapour rises up in the air. When it comes in contact with the cooler air, it
changes into tiny water droplets. This process is called condensation.

* Theses tiny water droplets join together to form clouds.

*When the clouds become heavier with water droplets, they fall down as rain, snow or
hail. This process is called precipitation.

*The rainwater flows back into the lakes, ponds, rivers, oceans etc.

This continuous process is called water cycle.
