STEM 434/534 Lesson Planning Template Spring 2021

(Complete answers in Purple font)

Name: Sydney Stevens Grade: 2nd Grade Topic: Solid Liquid Gas
Brief Lesson Description:
In this lesson students will learn that matter can exist in different phases (solids, liquids, and gases), and these phases all have different
characteristics.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
 Know that matter can exist in different phases
o Solid, Liquid, Gas

 Know the characteristics of these phases

How did this lesson develop as a result of your examination of research and data about employing culturally sustaining pedagogical
strategies? (Think equal opportunity, student interests, race, gender, disabilities etc.)
This lesson can be used by all students there will be interactive hands on activities and visual aides to use that will help students learn about
these things. This lesson plan will include different types of work that will allow all students to thrive and gain the proper knowledge
needed.

Narrative / Background Information

Prior Student Knowledge: Students should apply their knowledge from section a of this standard along with the things they learned
about matter in the first grade. The things they should previously know is:
 Matter has mass and takes up space
 Standard 1.3
o The student will investigate and understand that objects are made from materials that can be described by their
physical properties. Key ideas include a) objects are made of one or more materials with different physical properties
and can be used for a variety of purposes; b) when a material is changed in size most physical properties remain the
same; c) the type and amount of material determine how much light can pass through an object

Science & Engineering Practices: (You must tie engineering practices into your plan)

Planning and carrying out an investigation

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:

 The students could not know the different properties of a solid liquid and gas

DAY 1
10 Minutes
We will watch the YouTube video linked below to get an idea of solids liquids and gases, then take a few minutes to discuss examples of
what a solid liquid and gas are.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ4WduVp9k4

30 minutes
Oobleck Activity is it a solid or liquid
We will pair up in groups of two to make oobleck and work on our charts, the document below has all of the questions on it. Then we will
go over that this substance along with a few other things have properties of both a solid and a liquid.

DAY 2
Solid Liquid Gas Stations
30 minutes
Around the room I will have different stations anywhere from 9 stations these stations will either have describing words, pictures or
demonstrations of solids liquids and gases around the room and the students will go around the room and write on their sheet of paper
telling what they think the station was about either a solid a liquid or a gas.
Station 1 Gas -Water vapor from boiling water
Station 2 Solid- book
Station 3 Gas- (the picture of what the gas particles look like)
Station 4 Liquid- water
Station 5 Solid- Describing words and the definition of a solid.
Station 6 Liquid- The picture of liquid particles
Station 7 Gas- the definition of gas and describing words
Station 8 Solid- Picture of what solid particles look like
Station 9 Liquid the definition and describing words of a liquid.

After they go to each station we will sit and discuss why they thought the stations were what they answered and what the correct
answer was and why it was the correct answer.

As a exit ticket on this day we will be talking about healthy snacks that can be a solid or a liquid like an apple a smoothie, apple sauce,
and many different ones and as long as there are no allergies we will be turning a healthy solid snack into a healthy smoothie.

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:

DAY 3
10 Minutes
Watch the YouTube video linked below and discuss what is being talked about in the video.

Worksheets (45 Minutes)

We will do these worksheets individually to see if students understand the material, that way I can figure out whar exactly
needs to be targeted during our groups in day 4

Vocabulary:
Matter Solid Liquid Gas Mass Shape Size Volume

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

DAY 4
15 Minutes
To begin class I will break the students into two teams to play this game on the smart board. We will play this 2-3 times.

30 Minutes
After seeing who struggled with what I will take kids into small groups for small group instruction. While I am working with the students
in small groups the other students will be working on IXL any topic in section B, while they are waiting to go into small group. Link below

DAY 5
Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report) (Include a rubric):
For this summative assessment I will take questions from each of these worksheets to form a 15 question summative assessment of the
material we have covered in the week.

Plan for differentiation: (Be sure to specifically address the following learners)

 Students with high-incidence disabilities (e.g., autism, ADHD, mild learning disorders)- We will be working with some sort of slime
in one of the lessons. I know that some students with disabilities can have trouble with getting their hands dirty. If a student is
sensitive to this I will partner them up so they can watch the experiment to keep from causing any problems. I also have them
placed in the classroom for the best learning for them while watching a video or going over something aloud.

 ELL- I will be keeping up definition words in the classroom for this lesson solid, liquid, gas, and matter are a few of these words. I
will also make sure to add pictures to describe these words because 2 nd grade is still a good grade to add pictures to things.

 Gifted learners- I will have extra things for them to work on, books to read, and some fun interactive worksheets they can have
to challenge themselves. I would also allow them do some artistic extra work, drawing, creating comic books (related to the
science topics we are covering) etc.
Elaborate Further / Reflect: Enrichment:
 How will you evaluate your practice? I will evaluate my practice by seeing how students are doing in class on their assessments
and how engaged they are during the lesson.
 Where might/did learners struggle in the lesson? They could struggle learning what makes a solid liquid and gas different from
each other and what their specific characteristics are.
 How can the lesson be strengthened for improved student learning? To strengthen this lesson I could break these into different
days solids one day liquids on day 2 and gases on day three then continue with an assessment over the three at the end of the
week.
 Did the lesson reflect culturally sustaining pedagogies? If not, how can this be enhanced? The only way I can think of making this
lesson reflect culturally sustaining pedagogies is to find books about kids from different cultures learning about solids, liquids, and
gases.
