III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. ENGAGE
1. Drill
I have several pictures of
objects here. Read the words
I indicate as I show them to
you
Am I clear?
Yes Ma’am!

But before we begin, could

you please tell me what you
know about matter?
(The student raised hand)
Ma’am matter is anything that has mass and
Very Good! takes up space.
(And the teacher starts showing the
pictures)

The students will read the words written on

the pictures.

2. Review
(The teacher shows the real
objects)
I have here the real objects
of solid, liquid, gas. And
identify it whether it is solid,
liquid or gas, okay?
Yes Ma’am!

What form of matter is this?

Solid

Very Good!
How about this, what form of matter?

Gas

Can you identify what form of matter is

this?

Yes Ma’am! It is a solid

Good job! Is the water solid, liquid or a

B. Explore
1. Motivation
Play “Guess the Object”. I have
three boxes here named solid,
liquid, gas. And I have here a
box that contains different
objects. Each of you will pick
an object inside the box and
classify if it is solid, liquid or
gas. The students will pick an object
inside the box and after which they will
identify whether it is a solid, liquid or a
gas.
What do you observe about the
objects you classify?

It’s the things we see everywhere

Very Good!
Now I tell you, anything you saw are
matter.

2. Presentation
Today we will identify the
properties of matter based on
their function.

3. Pre- Activity
Our activity for today is going
to be.5 groups will be formed
from the class. You decide who
will lead your group and present
to the audience from among
yourselves.

May I remind you of your roles,

Leader - ensure that the group

completes the task

Presenter –report the outcome of

your ideas and answers.

Member- sharing of ideas and

brainstorming sessions for
appropriate answers.

Remember these rules before

we begin the activity. I'll recite
them one at a time, and you'll
repeat after me.

Listen to the instruction Listen to the instruction,

Cooperate & Participate cooperate & participate,

Minimize your voice
Work respectively Minimize your voice,
And respect each other.
And respect each other.

I want you to follow these

rules as you go through
today’s activity.

4. Activity Proper
I am going to distribute the
worksheets per group. There
will be assigned place for you
to work in. then you will
brainstorm come up with an
appropriate function on a
certain property of matter. You
will do this for 10 minutes.
Then I will give another minutes
for the presenter of each group
to report their answers in front.

Who understood the

instructions?
The pupils raised their hands.

Any questions?

None ma’am

If none, let us start the activity

C. EXPLAIN
1. Group Reporting
I’m glad that you all cooperate in the
activity that I gave. Now, it’s your turn
to choose one volunteer per group to
share their answers Infront based on
your activity about the appropriate
function on a certain property of
matter Matter can be identified by its different
properties.

That’s correct. Let’s give the group a

2. Discussion
We start our lesson entitled matter
and Its properties. Are you excited to Yes ma’am
learn about this?

So, matter is anything that

occupies space and has mass.
Everything is made of matter: the Yes ma’am, we understand
food you eat, the clothes you wear,
the water you drink, and even the
books, magazines, and gadgets you
use. Do you understand what is the
matter?
Ma’am properties are the external and
Now, let’s talk about the internal characteristics of an object
properties of matter. But before
that what is the terms of
properties?

That’s fantastic! Properties can also

help us to identify materials based on
their appearance, taste and shape.

So let’s move on the properties

of matter, first is physical
properties – are characteristics of Yes Ma’am!
matter that can be observed or

measure without having to change
its composition. These include
external characteristics such as
color,shape, size and texture.
Okay?
Yes Ma’am,such as red, green, blue, yellow
and violet.
COLOR refers to the combination
of lightness, hue, and saturation.
Can you tell me what color this ball
is?

Very Good!

SHAPE is the property that

describes the outline of external
appearance of an object

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

What is the ball’s shape?

How about the box’s shape?

The ball has a circle around it.
Lastly, what is the shape of
volcano? The box is square

The volcano has a triangle shape

Excellent students!

SIZE describes how big or small an

object is. For Example “The ant
and cat” Which of the two is
smaller?

Ma'am, an ant is much smaller than a cat.

Very Good!

TEXTURE refers to an object's

smoothness or roughness.
For Example “ Smooth is silk, and
rough is sandpaper”.

Yes Ma’am
Do you understand what I'm saying,
students?

We can now proceed to the next

topic, which is chemical
properties. These refer to the
internal structure of matter and
include properties such as
flammability and reactivity.

FLAMMABILITY is the ability of an

object to get burned by fire or
other strong chemicals. Wood is an
example of flammable materials

REACTIVITY is the ability of matter

charge in composition as
manifested by changes in it’s
physical properties, such as it’s
color and it’s form.

Yes ma’am ! The physical properties

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

Do you understand the difference include external characteristics such as
between physical and chemical color, shape, size and texture while
properties? chemical properties is refers to the
internal composition of matter and
include as flammability and reactivity
ma’am .

Excellent, that is correct!

Let us now proceed to

Distinguishing between the useful
and harmful materials.

Useful materials are very useful to

people are metals, plastics, wood
and textiles.

First is METAL, a strong, hard, and

shiny material that can be formed
into various shapes and is an
excellent conductor of heat and
electricity. It is commonly used in
coins, dinnerware, and automobile
parts.

Maam, it is commonly used in

kitchenware and containers.

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

Very Good !

So, now it's your turn to give an Ma'am, furniture and even houses are
example of a metal that is commonly made of wood.
commonly used.

Very Good!

Second is PLASTIC, which also

made from various chemicals and is
used in items such as water
containers, kitchenware, toys, and
many more.

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

Yes Ma’am

Okay!

The third material is WOOD,

which is made from the riots and

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

trunks of trees. It is tough,
flexible, and long-lasting, making
it an excellent all-purpose
material. A material that is
commonly used in construction
and musical instruments.

Tables, chairs, and even houses, Ma'am

Can you give an example of

something that is commonly
made of wood?

Very Good!

So let’s move on, TEXTILE is

made from woven natural or
man-made fibers and is used to
make a variety of items.
Clothing, bags, carpets, and
curtains are examples.

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

Let us now move to the hazardous
Materials. Some materials that
people use every day can be
harmful if not used correctly. Some
of this can result in injuries.

It is used for plastics, glasses, and metals,

ma'am.

Can you give me some examples of

made-up scissors and knives?

Okay correct!

Now let's talk about corrosive

materials. materials can damage Yes Ma’am
or destroy the outer layer of
other materials.

Have you seen this picture

before, class?

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

Yes ma'am, it is really effective for

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

removing stains.

Okay class, is muriatic acid very

useful to remove stains from tiles?

Okay very good!

However, when applied to metals, it
corrodes the metals.

Now, let’s move to flammable

materials, it can easily catch fire
when when exposed to heat.

Ma’am, It can be difficult to ignite, but

once acrylic catches fire, it burns
vigorously.

Examples: gasoline, acetone,

toluene, diethyl ether, alcohols.

Okay question what can easily

use in this picture?

Very Good!

Aside from gasoline and

lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol,

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

nail polish remover, hand
sanitizer, and wart remover
may also catch fire.

Let’s now proceed to reactive

materials. It causes a chemical
reaction when they are
combined with other chemical.
And too much reaction of
materials it leads to over
production.

Yes ma’am! The chemicals in the mixture

can be forcefully ejected and get into your
eyes and cause irritation.

The chemical reaction produces heat.

For example, when you mixed

baking soda and vinegar it will Goodbye and thank you ma’am!
cause bubbling and fizzing.

Okay class, are they both

chemical or which are
indicators or a chemical.

Very good! Which kind of

reaction can cause burns

Downloaded by Ellen Canja (e.e.ellen30@gmail.com)

Okay class, that’s the end of
our lesson for today. And I hope
you learned a lot.

D. ELABORATE
1. Generalization
What are the general properties of The General properties of matter are
matter? mass, volume, and density.

What are the special properties of The special properties of solid are
solid, liquid and gas? porosity, ductility, brittleness,
elasticity, malleability, and
flexibility. While liquid are fluidity,
viscosity, capillarity and surface
tension. And the special properties of
gas are diffusibility and compress.
The teacher makes a concept map on
the board to summarize the properties
of three (solid, liquid, and gas)

2. Application
What is the importance of knowing
the states of matter in our daily life?

Chemical energy contained in

food is the most significant source
of energy for maintaining life.
Matter and energy travel together
in food along food chains, hence
having the three states of matter
(liquid, solid, and gas) is critical.
Matter isn’t something that only

exists in a lab; we come into

contact with its hundreds of times
every day. Knowing how matter
works can help you appreciate the
intricate processes that underpin
even the most basic of objects.
