seats.

You’re welcome, class.

How are you feeling today? We’re fine, ma’am.

It’s nice to hear that! So am I. Are you all set Yes, we are!
for today’s class?

Great! Let us first check your attendance.

3. Attendance

Okay, I’ve noted all the absentees.

4. Classroom Rules

Just a few reminders: as much as possible,

please avoid getting in and out of the
classroom when class is going on.

B. Motivation

Now, we’ll watch a video clip. Please pay

attention.

*Teacher plays video) *Students watch a video

https://youtu.be/C8w6spCSbNg https://youtu.be/C8w6spCSbNg

Alright, what is the video all about? I think that Catriona is sharing her experience
Yes, Klint? and ideas.

Very good, Klint! You have the point. How

about Gerald? The video is all about Miss Catriona Gray's
questions and answers during the Miss
Universe 2018 Pageant.
Perfect! Thank you, Gerald.

And now, with your pair, please answer the

following questions.

1. What do you know about Catriona

Gray? Describe her in complete
sentences.
2. Do you think her answer to Steve's
question is convincing? Why or why
not?
3. What do you think is the speaker’s
stand in this line?
“I work a lot in the slums of Tondo,
Manila, and the life there is very poor
and very sad. Is this the reality in
Tondo, Manila right now?

You have 1 minute and 20 seconds to

brainstorm. After that, I will ask some
volunteers to share their ideas.

Alright! Time is up! Who would like to share

your answers?

Yes, Liezel! You are raising your hand. Our answers are:
1. Catriona Gray was crowned Miss
Universe 2018 in December.
2. She has a boyfriend.
3. She is very beautiful.

Very good, Liezel! Your answers are all

correct!

Let us proceed to the second question.

Okay, Ysabelle! I think that her answer is convincing because
she was able to touch the hearts of her fellow
Filipinos like me.

Thank you, Ysabelle. Can I have another

hand?
Yes, Jade. No, because she is just concerned about
Tondo, Manila, and not the whole Philippines.

Thank you for your answers. Ysabelle said

yes, while Jade said no. Anyway, we may not
always have the same view on certain things.
We just need to respect each other’s ideas.

How about your answers to question number

three?

Alpha Mae, what is your answer? I think that Miss Catriona is telling the truth
about Tondo, Manila to awaken the Filipinos
that we need to help each other for the
progress of our country.

Very good class! Let us give ourselves a round

of applause.

C. Presentation

Based on the activity, what could be our

lesson for this day?

Yes, Sharame! I think that our lesson for today is all about
telling the truth and giving opinions.

You have an idea there, Sharame! In other

words, we are going to tackle facts and
opinions.

D. Discussion

Today, we are going to learn about facts and

opinions. Please pay close attention and feel
free to ask questions if you have any, because
by the end of this session, you should be able
to recall key facts and opinions from the
previous literary selection you've read;
identify statements as fact or opinion from the
given selection; and finally, demonstrate
appreciation for distinguishing fact from
opinion by extracting facts and respecting
others' opinions.

Are you up for all the tasks? Definitely, ma’am.

That’s the spirit!

Let us first unlock the two most important

words.

Can anyone define what a fact is?

Okay, Mylene. You are raising your hand. A fact is something that is always true.

Correct! Everybody, please read the *Students read the definitions from the guide
definitions. of the teacher.

Fact Fact
● A fact is a statement that can be ● A fact is a statement that can be

● It contains data and research. ● It contains data and research.
● Includes numbers, dates, and ages. ● Includes numbers, dates, and ages.
● Can be proved through experiment or ● Can be proved through experiment or
observation. observation.

Thank you, class! A fact can be proven true or

false. It is also an event known to have
happened or something known to have
existed.

Facts are statements that can be proven by

reliable authority or information, such as
based on statistics, scientific law, history
books, and many others.
Facts signal words:
● Verified
● Peer-reviewed
● Statistics
● Proven
● Confirm
● Discovered
● Demonstrated
● Evidence

Examples:

Cats need food and water to survive.

Why is it considered a fact?

Yes, Venus! This is always true. You will find this
information in a book or on the internet.

Very well said. Let’s proceed to the second

example.

Another example:

Andres Bonifacio is known as “The Father

of the Philippine Revolution.”

Why do you think this is considered a fact?

Yes, Lennalyn! It is considered a fact because it is based on
the history of the Philippines.

Exactly! Looking back at Bonifacio, we can

see that Andres Bonifacio is known as "The
Father of the Philippine Revolution."

Alright, let’s have more examples. *Students read the examples from the guide

Do you have any questions? So far, none, ma’am.

Now, let us also define what an opinion is. *Students read the examples from the guide
Please read the definition. of the teacher

Opinion Opinion
● An opinion is a belief, impression, ● An opinion is a belief, impression,
judgment, or view of a person. It is not judgment, or view of a person. It is not
always true. always true.

Thank you. On the other hand, an opinion is

something that you believe to be true but
might not be. This can be an attitude or
judgment that cannot be proven true or false.

Example:

The girl has beautiful hair.

Who can explain it? Why is it considered an

opinion?
Go ahead, Juliet! This is an opinion because it is just what the
speaker personally thinks. Just because
someone thinks the girl has beautiful hair
does not mean that she actually has beautiful
hair. We cannot prove this to be true.

Another example;

President Rodrigo Duterte is the best

president of the Philippines.

Do you agree? Yes/No ma’am

Even if everyone agreed with this statement, it

is still an opinion because it is not provable.
Well, an opinion is not necessarily wrong; it is
merely not a provable fact.

There are also some words or phrases that will

help you recognize that you are being given an
opinion rather than a fact.
Opinion signal words:
● Think, feel, believe
● Claim, argue
● Always, never
● DGood, better, best
● Should should not
● In my point of view
● In my experience

Let us have more example sentences. Please *Students read the examples from the guide of

Is everything clear? Yes ma’am!

E. Application

'Sort me out' Fact and Opinion

Let us divide the class into five. Follow your

permanent groupings.

Okay, are you now in your group? Yes, ma’am

At this time, I will give you these flashcards

with mixed facts and opinions, and all you
need to do is to sort them into facts and
opinions. After a minute, please have one
representative in each group to present the
sorted facts and opinions. Did you get it? Yes, ma’am!
*The teacher distributes the flash cards *Students sort the flash cards.

F. Generalization

To sum up the discussion, let us call Shane to

give us her understanding of today’s lesson.

Okay, Shane, can you please differentiate fact Fact is a true statement and it can be proven
and opinion? while opinion is a feeling or belief and it
cannot be proven.
Very well said. Now, How to identify a fact
from an opinion?
Yes Annie! To identify if the statement is a fact or
opinion, we will look for the opinion-marking
signals and the key word for facts.

Great answer! Class let us give them a Correct

ni Kris Aquino clap.

Do you usually listen to the radio or watch

television or scroll down your newsfeed on
Facebook for news or updates? Yes, ma’am

Just heads up that some of that news is fact

and some are just opinions based on their
source.

Now, another question. How is it important to

learn how to distinguish fact from opinion?

Yes, Novem! Through that skill we know how to filter ideas

that are acceptable or not and to avoid
misunderstanding.

Exactly!
The most important thing is that we should be
able to interpret the information intelligently.
For example, as you check your Facebook
account, you’ve read your friend’s post of her
opinion about having no class and you
considered it as fact. Then you informed your
other classmates about it. The next day, your
teacher reprimanded the whole class for not
attending the class. Perhaps your classmates
will blame you and you consider you a liar
and they might not believe you anymore when
you will announce something. That’s the
bottom line there. Understood? Yes ma’am!
Now let us test if you’ve really learned
something. We’ll have a short test. Is everyone
ready to take? Yes ma’am!
