The purpose of this document is to present the basic principles governing the
MIMICS function of Controlog operator station, together with the standard rules used
in the animation of screen-based mimic views.
- The ergonomics of the MIMIC function and its associated windows section 2.
- The standard representation methods using symbols that are or are not animated.
Section 3, 4 and 5.
- The standard control windows. These are used to transmit remote commands or
setpoint to the process. Section 6.
The present document takes part in the complementary specification quoted below.
The Mimic function screen workspace of ALSPA HMI comprises 4 main areas:
Title bar
Top frame
Central region with:
a. Explorer
b. Work area
c. Configuration window – this window is not opened at the startup.
Status bar
The figure below shows the components of the ALSPA HMI workspace:
The title bar of the ALSPA HMI workspace provides the information about the
screen and the control over the size and the display of the screen.
The figure below shows the title bar of the ALSPA HMI:
The top frame of the ALSPA HMI workspace provides access to viewers,
administration tools and to the alarms associated to various parts of the plant etc.
The figure below shows the top frame of the ALSPA HMI:
Home icon
Set alarm bar
Company icon
Date and time (optional)
Last alarm band (optional)
Shortcuts tool bar(optional)
The home icon of the top frame provides the main menu to access ALSPA HMI
functions, to configure the operator settings and servers using administration tools,
to get help on ALSPA HMI etc.
The central region of the ALSPA HMI workspace provides access to the functions
and the data of the plant, to the viewers and the Configuration window etc.
a. Explorer
The Explorer of the central region allows to navigate and to access the data and
functions of the plant (E.g., Historic data of variables, Trend, Mimics, Sequence
monitoring functions etc).
Favorites: explores all the shortcuts and the key shortcuts lists
The Explorer also provides a small window called Clipboard at the bottom of it. The
clipboard temporarily holds the variables.
The work area of the central region allows to view the different viewers opened.
The opened viewers contain the following components in common:
Viewers tabs bar: help the operator to navigate through various opened
viewers
The figure below shows the work area with the trend viewer opened:
The standard viewer tool bar helps the operator to display and manage the opened
viewers.
The standard viewer tool bar is associated to a viewer. It is visible only inside a
viewer.
The standard viewer tool bar contains:
Navigation of groups
c. Configuration window
The Configuration window is displayed as tab at the right of the central region when
the operator selects the default settings or the operator settings in the main menu.
The status bar provides the server information and error information, connection
information, configuration information of the operator interface settings, of the
ALSPA HMI etc.
Information to show the status of the server connection, the ALSPA HMI station
number, error details, date and time.
The figure below shows the status bar of the ALSPA HMI:
IEC 617-7 based standard symbols are used in mimic-views to give graphic
representation of the plant's equipment (see section 4, Standard Symbols Library),
and when needed, to show their actual physical state (see section 5, Standard
Animations). Symbols are classed into 2 types: the static and the dynamic
symbols.
Static symbols are not animated and are used to represent equipment having no
information attached to their operational real states. However, their presence in a
circuit brings a true and logical image of a functional system.
a) Static electrical symbols are shown with the colours of the single line diagram.
Dynamic connecting devices are represented with colour coded animations, e.g.:
Two types of dynamic symbol represent the non-commandable and the remotely
commandable devices.
In addition to the function described above, commandable devices give the operator
access to control windows enabling him to send remote commands.
NON-COMMANDABLE COMMANDABLE
Data linked with dynamic objects to graphically show the equipment states are
handled by Controlog system in the following ways:
INHIBITION OF AN INFORMATION
In case of maintenance or when an equipment becomes non-operational, the
operator can choose to ignore the state of a variable or a variables group so that to
avoid the apparition of false or repetitive alarms. For this purpose, a standard
function called inhibition has been made available to the operator.
A dynamic object whose associated variable has been inhibited is displayed with a
white background, e.g.:
- A controller fault
In case of invalidity, the dynamic object is displayed with a grey background, for
example:

This kind of commands can be used to send direct orders such as: emergency stop,
validation of a configuration…
A simple click on buttons placed in mimic views displays quickly the views having
close relation with the one currently on screen. Their functions are clearly indicated
on the buttons, as shown on the examples given below:
The standard buttons can easily be customised to suit the specific needs of a project.
Graphic object with the appearance of a push-button, onto which the operator
designates by clicking with the mouse to execute an action such as displaying a
mimic view or opening a control window.
