Introduction
Entrepreneurship is the engine that drives any successful
industry or economy. In the rapidly evolving hospitality,

tourism, and leisure sector worldwide this is particularly

true. The tourism industry plays important role in
business development, hospitality, and leisure industries,
in the first place based on entrepreneurship.

What is a Tourism Entrepreneur?

• A Tourism Entrepreneur is a person who undertakes a risk to start up their own
business. This risk could end up making a profit or dishing up a loss.
• An Entrepreneur usually has a vision, dream, or idea which, with a lot of hard work,
they try and make work. A Tourism Entrepreneur, therefore, will have an ‘idea’ that
will hopefully work in the tourism industry.

Types of Entrepreneurs
1. Innovative Entrepreneurs
These are the ones who invent new ideas, new products, new production methods or
processes, discover potential markets, and reorganize the company’s structure. These are
the industry leaders and contribute significantly towards the economic development of
the country. They are always ready to take a risk because they enjoy the excitement of a
challenge, and every challenge has some risk associated with it.

2. Imitating Entrepreneurs
The imitating entrepreneurs are those who immediately copy the new inventions made
by the innovative entrepreneurs. These do not make any innovations by themselves; they
just imitate the technology, processes, methods pioneered by others. These entrepreneurs
are found in places where there is a lack of resources or an industrial base due to which
no innovations could be made. Thus, they are suitable for the underdeveloped regions
where they can imitate the combinations of inventions already well established in the
developed regions, to bring a boom in their industry.

3. Fabian Entrepreneurs
These types of entrepreneurs are skeptical about the changes to be made in the
organization. They do not initiate any inventions but follow only after they are satisfied
with their success rate. They wait for some time before the innovation becomes well
tested by others and does not result in a huge loss due to its failure.

Entrepreneurial Traits and Skills Required to be a Successful Travel and Tourism

Entrepreneur

In entrepreneurship in travel and tourism, the skills and knowledge required are the following:

1. Opportunity recognition – Opportunity recognition is how entrepreneurs identify the way of

introducing new services or products to customers (Sepúlveda, and Bonilla, 2014.). In travel
and tourism passengers mainly expect safe and comfortable traveling economically. For
achieving this organization should increase the vehicles provided and make the price of
traveling more economic than other travelers are provided.

2. Strategy Development – For starting any business sufficient strategy is a very important
factor. Entrepreneurs should set a strategy to make their business more effective and leads
to development more with time. In tourism and traveling competition is increasing very
rapidly. Thus, it is very important to identify the competition and make a strategy
accordingly.

3. Assembly of Resource and Financing – It is very important for an organization to know

available resources and financial conditions. Travelling and tourism is a sector that involves
a large number of resources and money. If an entrepreneur knows available resources and
ideas then it becomes easy for the organization to arrange more resources and money if
required.

4. Strong People Skills – It is very important to have strong people skills to communicate with
more people and to motivate employees. This skill is very important because it helps in the
motivation of employees. Successful entrepreneurs generally have this skill. As motivated
employees can work more efficiently thus entrepreneurs should be able to motivate their
employees.
