2. What is the message being shown in the picture?
3. What kind of social inequality is being manifested in the picture?
4. How will this affect the living condition of many Filipinos?

Let’s Explore

Society consists of different people who hold different characteristics and are born indifferent.
They also have characteristics, as well as varying levels of strength, wealth and prestige. This could
adversely affect the equality of the society's members.
For example, social inequality represents inherent differences among individuals, their varying
abilities and efforts. Someone may have remarkable intellect or talent or may have worked very hard to
attain their wealth and reputation. In the four corners of our social world this can be seen. This is often
referred to as Social Stratification. It could be said that social inequality is the heart of sociology. By
following it, the discipline is able to confront social pressures that are born from the many social forces
driving people in all kinds of directions.
Accessibility and availability are two separate topics that require clarity at the beginning as they
describe the center of inequality as a social problem. Availability refers to the appearance, absence or
lack of social desires; thus accessibility refers to the actual forms and means of resource availability.
Traditionally, three significant social desirables are power, wealth, and prestige. Possession of these
determines individual’s social status relative to others. Social standing represents the importance of
individuals and their access to social, political and symbolic capital — in other words, their position as a
class. Various sociologists have varying ideas about what constitutes a social class. Karl Marx studied it
in terms of the wealth produced in relation to the ownership of production means. Wealth may refer to
capital, assets, and tangible related resources. On the other hand, Max Weber differentiates these into
three: money, strength and reputation. The social status of individuals can be assessed, all at once,
based on their relative access to these three. (Contreras, 2016)

Let’s Elaborate
