CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Research Design

The methodology that is used is an experimental research. Experimental

Research is a study conducted by manipulation that aims to find out as a result of

manipulation of observed individual behavior. In general Experimental Research

is a study conducted to determine the effect of giving a treatment or deal to the

subject of research. To achieve the aim of the study the researcher used the True-

Experimental Research approach.

B. Research Setting and Subject

1. Population

The Population of research is all of the student at SMPN 11

Lhokseumawe.which consist of 299 male students and 330 female students.

2. Sample

In this study there are two class as sample, the sample of research is a

student from first grade of junior high school (VII/4) as the Experiment class

it consist of 32 students, and (VII/5) as the control class that consist 33

students.

C. Research Procedure

The researcher has been through the following steps during the

research procedures and application .

1. Studied previous researches about English language teaching and

Hot Seating based learning and considered the drawbacks of each

research.

2. Held several meetings with specialist English teachers to discuss

Hot Seating strategy problems and difficulties.

3. Designed teacher's guide with lesson outlines that cover all the

sessions implemented in the study.

4. Designed the pre and post oral tests.

5. Taught students speaking skills by using Hot Seating technique.

6. Provided recommendations and suggestions based on the results

and findings of the study.

D. Data Collection Technique

1. Oral test

Oral test is a practice is a set of question to the student in spoken

form. The participant of the test was the student at second grade of SMPN 11

Lhokseumawe which class VII/4 as an experimental class.

E. Research Instrument

In quantitative research, all of process of collecting data was done based

on the researcher planning, and direct observation in the field. To achieve the

aims of the study, the researcher used tests of oral speaking skills test.

1. Oral Speaking Skills Test

The researcher prepared oral speaking skills test to measure

student's ability to speak English fluently; the test was used pre test and

post test.

F. Data Analysis Technique

The following ways had been taken by the researcher to analyze the data

took from the observation and test.

1. Pre requisite test

Before the researcher decides the sample, the researcher should

conduct a homogeneity test by choosing two as experiment class and

control class. This test conducted to determine whether the data are

homogenous or not. After conducted the test, data analysis was carried out

to find out the homogeneity of the sample. Here, homogeneity test are

employed.

a. Homogeneity Test

It is used to know whether experimental group and control

group, It is decided from population that has relatively same

variant or not. It was meant to get the assumption that sample of

19

research came from a same condition or homogenous. The writer

used the formula as follows:

If the calculation result of count F is lower that table F (

countF <table F ) by 5% degree of significant so Ho is accepted, it

means the data is homogeneous or both of groups have the same

variance.

2. Hypothesis Test

To respond to the objectives of the study, the researcher examined

the data in the following steps that was to prove the researcher hypothesis

about the difference of students' vocabulary achievement between students

who had been taught using picture word inductive model and those who

had been taught using the traditional technique (explanation only).

a. Score the post test. After giving the post-test to the students, the

researcher scored its result.

b. Compare the result of the test of the two groups. This step was

done to prove the research hypothesis. Here, the t-test formula is

used. In this case, because the group size is the same, the formula

for computing the t-test value is like this.
