Viaduct Revitalization Icaro Diniz | Arquitetura & Urbanismo

LOCATION | City, State, country

Serra Talhada | Pernambuco | Brazil

SUMMARY
The city of Serra Talhada - PE is located in the center of a micro-region,
where it becomes the hub of several surrounding municipalities and has the main
access by road BR-232 through the viaduct in question.
The viaduct had characteristics of abandonment and vandalism. At night, it
offered risks to pedestrians who, in addition to the lack of signage for mobility,
did not have the necessary artificial lighting to obtain a greater sense of security
when crossing to the other side under the viaduct. The project to revitalize this
equipment aimed to establish a link between people when they return to the city
or who eventually cross the state via the viaduct. To create this link, we sought to
insert elements of the northeastern culture into the project that could promote a
sense of belonging, such as the florals that are present in the clothes of the old
cangaceiros, which were used as a reinterpretation to compose the landscaping.
The anthem, as one of the most relevant symbols of a municipality, was also used
to represent the nobility of our place, where it states: “[...] as a princess of the
sertão you have the royal title and of Pernambuco you are certainly the heart!” ,
engraved on both sides, on the side of the track on the viaduct.

In art, we also represent the characteristics of the northeastern hinterland

and our particular history of foundation. The aesthetic concept for the painting
was born as a way of representing the sun, our great protagonist and antagonist,
in which it is aligned on the east/west axis with the BR-232.
The viaduct in question is located in an area that is the intersection between BR-
232, which runs through the entire state of Pernambuco, a state road that gives
access to the municipality of Triunfo-PE at PE-365 and Av. Afonso Magalhães
which is the arterial road of Serra Talhada and goes to the city center passing
through several neighborhoods.

This equipment caused inconvenience to both pedestrians and the vehicles

they use to enter and leave the city or travel to the neighborhoods separated by
it. In addition to being a nodal point for destinations, with the interventions
presented, it now becomes a visual landmark in the city's landscape. (Attachment

PROJECT DETAILS

Mobility
The illustration above represents the path designed for pedestrians, which offers
mobility and safety when crossing the lanes, with accessibility and the walkway
being redone on the four corners. The flowerbeds were also redesigned to
facilitate the path of vehicles and the passage of pedestrians.
The interventions for this viaduct show that spaces like this can become an
environment that benefits all the inhabitants of the city. In addition to making
its function possible with harmony, it aims at an urban aesthetic and gives life to
equipment that are usually abandoned by the public
authorities. (Attachment 06)

Landscaping
The vegetation was designed to resist the climate of the hinterland, being
Moréia and Crino Roxo shrub species that are complementary to the existing
grass for forage. (Attachment 07)

Lighting
Lighting was one of the biggest problems that were solved with a new pole in
each bed and eight reflectors that point to the vegetation in the extension of
the viaduct. (Attachment 08)

Culture
The panel above will be painted by the team of Juber Graff and other local
artists on one of the retaining walls of the viaduct, which represents our
foundation history, directly linked to the religious history in the construction
and development of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Penha. In addition to this,
other panels will represent the fauna and flora of the caatinga and the culture
with all representation of Xaxado (regional dance style) and historical figures of
the Cangaço and Lampião. (Attachment 09)
