What I Need to Know

This module was written and designed to make learning easier especially as we are in
the “new normal” situation. As an educational tool, this module about the Physical
Fitness Activity Pyramid for Young Learners challenges you as a learner, to become
creative, resourceful and independent. The scope of the module provides a variety of
activities that will stimulate independent and self-guided learning experience. Lessons
in this module are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course to ensure
effective learning continuity, make the experience more meaningful, effective and
relevant to life situations.
Throughout this module you are given adequate knowledge and activities that develop
movement skills. It will also help you become skillful movers in a variety of situations
in order to maintain your fitness level.

Physical fitness is not just the absence of sickness or disease. It also involves the ability
to do daily tasks and enjoy leisure activities without undue fatigue in this new normal
scheme. Physical Activity Pyramid is a visual representation demonstrating how to
increase physical activity until it becomes a part of daily routine. It helps a lot for
teachers to identify the different opportunities and activity integration & organize a plan
to meet the recommendation for daily physical activity in schools.

The Physical Activity Pyramid for Young Learners is to help the learners to be active. It
is originated from the Pyramid Guide which is composed of physical activities. Physical
Activity is any type of body movements that releases energy. It is also divided into 4
levels, wherein each level has its own activities to work with.

FOUR LEVELS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PYRAMID


Level 1: Lifestyle Physical Activities
- Everyday lifestyles can contribute
significantly to good health, fitness and
wellness.
- This can be done as part of everyday work
- They reduced risk of diseases
- It has wellness benefits
- They are performed daily

• Get at least 30 minutes a day of level one activities

Level 2: Vigorous / Intense Activities


- It includes Active sports and aerobics
- It offers additional health and fitness
benefits
- It is performed fewer days per week 2 to 3
week

• These activities that can be performed for a relatively long period of time
and elevates the heart rate significantly.

Level 3: Flexibility & Muscle Fitness


- Contributes to improved performance
- Associated with reduced risk of
osteoporosis
- Contribute to reduced rate of injury

• These activities are important to promote flexibility & muscle strength &
endurance.

Level 4: Rest & Inactivity

- Some types of inactivity are


necessary (e.g. playing video games)
- These are limited on all days per
week.

• Sometimes to relax is important to all of us as well as 8 hours of uninterrupted


sleep.

Safety Precautions in Doing Physical Activities

1.Take time to warm up, cool down, & stretch.


2. Start slowly & build up to more intense activity.
3. Stop the activity if you feel pain.
4. Drink plenty of water.
5. When you are active outdoors, wear lightweight clothes.
6. Put sunscreen or wear sunglasses or hat for sun protection.
7. Wear shoes that fit well and are right for your activity.

Skill – Related Physical Activities
Agility - it is the ability to move and change directions quickly.
Ex. Basketball players, softball players possess good agility.

Balance – it is the ability to keep an upright posture while one is standing still or
moving.
Ex. People with good balance will most likely become good in activities such
as gymnastics and ice skating.

Coordination- it is the ability to use the senses together with the body parts, or to
use two or more body parts at the same time
Ex. People with good eye-hand are good at hitting or kicking games such as
baseball, soccer, and golf.

Power – it is the ability to release maximum force very quickly.


Ex. Throwing events like shot put, javelin throw are good examples of
activities which develop power.

Reaction Time – it is the time it takes to perform an action once a person realizes
the need to act.
Ex. People with good reaction time can make fasts in track in field or
swimming or even in karate & fencing.

Speed – it is the ability to perform a movement or cover a distance in a short period


time.
Ex. Running or Walking
