Firmware update guideline for 611, 615 & 620 Series control and
protection relays

Preparations

During the updating process the Relay must be continuously powered, and the related bay/cubicle must
be taken out of service.

ABB Relion Series relays has been designed in such a way that testing of the relay is not required after
the update. However, it is recommended to visually check that there are no abnormal indications and after
the bay energization that the relay measures voltages and currents as expected.

Tools and requirements for updating the relay

Product information, tools and files required for updating relay firmware version are specified at each
firmware update Release Note document.

Procedure for updating the relay

Assuming you already have required tools, files and PCM600 project with object(s) created for the IED(s),
please follow the steps below:

1. Use PCM600 to connect to the relay through the front or rear port.
2. Ensure that you have the latest configuration data of the relay in the PCM600 project.
3. If not, mouse right click on your relay object in the PCM600 project and select "Read from IED" from
the popup menu.
4. When all the data has been read successfully, mouse right click again on the IED object in the
PCM600 project.
5. If using the rear port with other IP address than the default 192.168.2.10 it is considered as a Remote
update and must be enabled in the IED. Enable it in the IED by setting the parameter
Configuration\General\Remote Update to “Enable”.
6. Select from the popup menu "Update IED" to start the Firmware Update Tool.
7. In the first popup dialog you will see information about the IED to be updated.
8. Read the information provided and then press the "Next >" button.

9. If you have Disturbance recordings in the IED, a popup dialog will be seen which informs you that the
recordings will be deleted during the update. Press the “Yes” button to continue or “No” button to
cancel the update and upload the recordings if needed. If the update is cancelled it can be started
again from point 6.
10. In the next popup dialog press the "Browse" button to browse for the relay update file which you have
saved on your computer.
11. Relay update file is ” *.bin” file type and named according to product type, series, standard
configuration and firmware version.

12. Select the required relay update file and press the "Open" button.
13. In the popup dialog you will now see the information about the firmware update. Press the "Next >"
button to continue.
14. Select the Network Interface Controller to be used.
15. In the next popup dialog, the program is ready to start the updating of the IED. Note this is the last
chance to cancel the update!
16. Press the "Next >" button to start the updating of the IED.
17. If using the rear port with other IP address than the default 192.168.2.10 it is considered as a Remote
update and the tool will wait 30 s before the update will start. During this time the update can be
cancelled from the IED by pressing the “ESC” button.
18. In the popup dialog you will now see the progress of the update.
19. Finally, when the IED is updated a popup dialog is seen with the text "Firmware update completed
successfully". Press the "Close" button. (If it is seen in the popup dialog that the update has failed,
please try to update again by starting from paragraph 6.)
20. Mouse right click on your IED object again and select "Write to IED" from the popup menu to write
back the actual configuration data.
21. When the configuration data has been written back to the IED successfully, the updating is ready.

To clear the LCT indication which will be shown on the LHMI after the update follow the steps below:
22. Click right mouse button on your IED object in the PCM600 project and select "Lifecycle Handling"
and then “Collect IED Composition Data” from the popup menu to get the data collected from the IED.
23. In the next popup dialog, it is possible to select what LCT data to be collected from the IED. Press the
"Ok" button to collect the data.
24. An Info Dialog will be shown confirming that the data was collected successfully, continue by pressing
the "OK" button.
25. The LCT indication should be disappeared from the LHMI.

Relay firmware update procedure is completed.
