Concept Notes

Academic text refers to a text that ideas, concepts, and theories related to a specific
discipline.

Content Concepts and theories related to a certain discipline


Structure Introduction, body, conclusion, and list of reference
Style Express critical questions and issue; has objective point-of-view;
uses hedging; gives factual and reliable sources and evidences;
uses formal language

To efficiently read academically, readers should identify the purpose for reading, select
what to read, and read actively.
Critical reading involves practicing the strategies employed in each stage of reading.
(For the list of strategies for each reading stage, refer to pages 7, 8 and 9 of your book.)

SQ3R is a reading approach that stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review.

KWL is another reading method that guides you in understanding text by listing what
you know about the topic (K), what you want to learn (W), and what you learned (L)

Task 1. Identify if the text is academic or nonacademic. Write your answer on the space
provided before each number.

Task 2. Read the article entitled “A Study on Positive and Negative Effects of Social
Media on Society” using the SQ3R Critical Reading Strategy. Complete the table with
necessary details.

Survey Read the title, and the section title of the article. Turn these into
questions.

Question Ask yourself what questions would you want to answer from your
reading, how much do you know about the topic, and your goal in
reading the material.

Read
Read actively. You may reread it or reduce the pace of your reading for better
understanding.
Recite Write down the answers to the inquiries you created at the Question
part. Do this part immediately after reading. Write down also new
information you discovered.

Review Write the summary about the text. Please limit your summary within 5
to 10 sentences only.

Task 3. Using the same article in the previous activity, analyze the content, style and
structure of the text. Using a minimum of 300 words and maximum of 500 words, write
an analysis about it.
