HOME ENRICHMENT READING ACTIVITY (Project HERA)

I.INTRODUCTION
Reading is a complex developmental challenge which is intertwined in many other
developmental accomplishments such as attention, language and motivation. It is not only a
cognitive psycholinguistic activity but also a social activity.

People wonder what reading test scores mean in terms of everyday achievement. What
does it mean if a child reads at his own level? Does it mean he or she reads well at his grade
level? Does it mean the child knows most of the words at sight?

Pupils are taught by the reading teachers to become instructional readers. A level at
which the reader stretches pupils thinking and manifest good reading skill that includes
comprehension. However, Independent level is a level at which the child reads with ease and
pleasure. On the other hand, frustration level suggests that the reader can’t or could hardly
read at this level.

It is in this premise that reading inventory is imperative to determine the levels of the learners
such instructional, independent and frustration.

Analysis of the level of performance of pupils provides an opportunity for teachers and
the school head to come up with necessary interventions and making instruction in reading
effective and other initiatives for such purpose.

The following are the levels of reading performance to wit:

1. INDEPENDENT- demonstrated by very good speed and accuracy. Assistance is not

appropriate.

2. INSTRUCTIONAL- demonstrated by fair speed or accuracy that requires minimal

assistance.

3. FRUSTRATION- demonstrated by poor speed or accuracy. It requires appropriate

reading interventions.

II. RATIONALE
In order to improve the reading comprehension and literacy level of pupils in the school,
the proponent has initiated the HOME ENRICHMENT READING ACTIVITY (HERA) which aims at
involving parents/guardians in the improvement of the reading ability of pupil. Every Thursday,
pupils from grades 1 were provided with reading materials for them to read at home and seek
the help of their parents/guardians in answering questions. Questions cited were varying in
levels from literal, integrative, inferential to critical.

Parents/guardians who help the child at home acknowledges such activity by affixing
his/her signature on the reading materials. HERA is a part of the school’s class program in
Grade 1 to 3 on both languages.
The school and its entity found such effective ensures the participation and the
importance of parents/guardians as partners in the education of their children.

III. OBJECTIVES
