    Softball originated as a variation of baseball between Yale and Harvard in the late 1800s. George Hancock is considered the father of softball, inventing it using a boxing glove and broomstick instead of a baseball. The first softball league outside the US was in Toronto in 1897. Softball is played with 9 players on each team on a smaller diamond field than baseball, involving batting, baserunning, pitching, throwing, catching, and fielding to catch ground balls, fly balls, and line drives.
