what is softball?
softball
-The name "softball" dates back to 1926. The name was coined by
Walter Hakanson of the YMCA at a meeting of the National Recreation
Congress.
-Softball is a sport similar to baseball, and it is played with a larger ball
on a smaller field and with only underhand pitches permitted. Softball is
played competitively at club levels, the college level, and the
professional level. The game was first created in 1887 in Chicago by
George Hancock.
-These are some additional names for
softball: "indoor baseball" "kitten ball"
"diamond ball" "mush ball" and "pumpkin ball"

- The name softball spread throughout the

USA by the 1930s.

-In 1934, the Joint Rules Committee on

Softball collaborated to create a set of
standardized rules. Up until this point, the
game was being played with varied rules,
player positions, and ball sizes.

-The first British women's softball league

was established in 1952. In 1991, women's
fast-pitch softball was selected to debut at
the 1996 Summer Olympics.
