Class 9 IS MATTER PURE ?

SYNOPSIS – 2

22) The SIMPLE PHYSICAL Separation METHODS i.e., the methods we use in our day-to-day life
are:
• Handpicking
• Sieving
• Filtration
• Winnowing etcs.,

23) With the help of a neat labelled diagram, explain Sublimation.

Diagram: Textbook Page No. 46

Procedure:
• Take one tablespoon of Common salt and one tablespoon of Ammonium chloride and mix them.
• Take the mixture in a china dish.
• Take a glass funnel which is big enough to cover the dish.
• Plug the mouth of the funnel with cotton.
• Invert the funnel over the dish.
• Keep the dish on the stand of a stove and heat for sometime.
Observation: Initially you find vapours of Ammonium chloride.
Then solidified Ammonium chloride is seen on the walls of the funnel.

24) With the help of a neat labelled diagram, explain Evaporation.

Diagram: Textbook Page No. 46

Procedure:
• Take a beaker and fill it to half its volume with water.
• Keep a watch glass on the mouth of the beaker.
• Put a few drops of ink on the watch glass.
• Heat the beaker and observe the watch glass.
• Continue heating till you do not observe any further change on the watch glass.
Observation: We observe the residue of ink on the watch glass.

25) How can you separate Salt from Salt water?

1
Procedure:
• Take a china dish.
• Fill it half with salt water.
• Place it on a Tripod stand with a wire gauze.
• Heat the china dish with a Bunsen burner.
• Observe the China dish.
• Continue heating till you do not observe any further change.
Observation: We observe the residue of salt in the china dish.

26) Write the differences between Miscible and Immiscible Liquids.

S.No. Miscible Liquids Immiscible Liquids

Definition A liquid is said to be miscible if it An immiscible Liquid is one which
dissolves completely in another liquid. doesn’t dissolve but forms a layer over
another liquid and can be separated
easily.
Example Alcohol and water Oil and Water, Kerosene and Water
etc.,

27) With the help of a neat labelled diagram, explain how you can separate a mixture of Kerosene
and water?

Diagram: Textbook Page No. 48

Procedure:
• Take a separating funnel and pour the mixture of Kerosene and water in it.
• Let it stand undisturbed for some time.
• Separate layers of Oil and water are formed.
• Open the stopcock of the separating funnel and pour out the lower layer of water carefully.
• Close the stopcock of the separating funnel as the Oil reaches the stop-cock.
Principle:
The principle is that the immiscible liquids separate out into layers depending on their densities.
