in Factual and Personal Recounts

1. Procedural text
It gives information and instructions on how to make or do something.
Visuals, such as diagrams, photographs, or illustrations, may be used to make
instructions easier to follow. Recipes and science experiments are examples of
procedural texts.

In giving instructions, use imperative sentences. Imperative sentences are


used to give commands or requests.

2. Explanation text
It tells how something works or why something happens.

Example of Explanation:

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of corona virus. ‘CO’ stands for


corona, ‘VI’ for virus, and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as ‘2019
novel corona virus’ or ‘2019-nCoV.’ The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same
family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and some types of
common cold.

3. Narrating Events
Recount is a narration of a past event. There are two types of recount:
factual and personal.
Factual recount – shows recorded events where the speaker or writer was not
involved.

Personal recount – describes events that the speaker or writer was personally
involved.

How to Use Appropriate Oral Language?

When giving information and instructions, explaining, and narrating factual and
personal recounts, you need to learn how to use sequence markers. These are words
that signal sequence or chronological order of events.

Here are some of the most commonly used sequence markers:

second after as soon as
next meanwhile finally
when eventually then
while subsequently afterward

In the designing of the flag, several considerations were taken into account: first,
the white equilateral triangle of the Katipunan; second, the golden sun symbolizing
liberty, championed by the first eight provinces to revolt; then, the general outline of
the Cuban flag, as anticipated and interpreted by General Gregorio H. del Pilar; and
finally, the three stars to represent Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

How to sequence steps or events correctly?


● Start by carefully reading the words, phrases, or paragraphs that describe them.
● Determine which should come first, second, and so on.
● Use sequence markers like first, when, later, afterward, then next eventually and
finally to signal the chronological arrangement of steps or events.
● Finally, rewrite the paragraph, noting the correct sequence of ideas.

When you instruct, explain, or narrate, observe the following:

1. Give clear instructions, explanation, or narration of events.


2. Provide examples to further illustrate your points. Demonstrate whenever
possible.
3. Speak at the right speed. Pause to give your audience time to digest the
information.
4. Involve your audience. Ask them questions as needed.
5. Use open gestures, such as upward-facing palm gesture. If you’re standing, bring
out your hands where the audience can see them, usually over the belly button.
By doing so, you will exude confidence when speaking.

Good body gestures and attitude you should observe and incorporate to oral language
skills:
● Have a positive posture, relaxed and open facial expression.
● Avoid unnecessary gestures or distracting mannerisms.
● Maintaining eye contact helps you gauge audience’s attention and adjust your
language, volume, or the organization of speech. This will help you better
understand, communicate more clearly and successfully interpret nonverbal
cues about their clarity.
● Be natural, spontaneous and conversational.
● Speak loudly and articulate clearly.
● Remember how tone of voice—which includes pitch, volume, speed, and
rhythm—can change the meaning of what you say to avoid misunderstanding.
● Listen attentively when someone is speaking or giving instructions.
● Let your body mirror your feelings.
