Problems

Pr.1 One face of a copper plate 3 cm thick is maintained at 400ºC, and the other face is
maintained at 100 ºC. Determine:
a) The heat flux transferred through the plate.
b) The heat transfer rate through the plate if its area is 2 m2.

Pr.2 Air at 20ºC blows over a hot plate 75 by 50 cm maintained at 250ºC. The convection
heat transfer coefficient is 25 W/m2. ºC. Calculate the heat transfer rate.

Pr.3 Air at 20ºC blows over a hot steel (1 %C) plate75 by 50 cm and 2 cm thick
maintained at 250ºC. The convection heat transfer coefficient is 25 W/m2. ºC. A 300
W is lost from the plate surface by radiation. Calculate the inside plate temperature.

Pr.4 If the radiant flux from the sun is 54E+6 W/m2, what would be its equivalent
blackbody temperature?

Pr.5 Hot vertical plate is suspended in cool still air. The cooling process is a function of
time. Knowing the surface temperature TS and the value of dT/dt, formulate an
expression for the heat transfer coefficient h. Calculate h using this expression.
Data: , , As = 0.3X 0.3 m, Cp = 2770 J/kg.K, M = 3.75
kg, dT/dt = 0.022 K/s.

Pr.6 A long conducting copper rode of diameter D, electrical thermal resistance per unit
length R’ and emissivity ε is under steady state conditions. An electrical current I
is passed through the rod. The ambient air and the surrounding temperatures are
equal. Develop an expression to show the variation of rode temperature as a
function of the electrical current.
