lives

What is Science?

Science is a systematic and logical study towards how the

universe works. Science is a dynamic subject. Science can
also be defined as the systematic study of the nature and
behavior of the material and physical universe, based on
observation, experiment, and measurement, and the formulation
of laws to describe these facts in general terms.

Science is one of the greatest blessings to the mankind. It has

played a major role in improving the quality of living of the man.
Science is omnipresent and omnipotent in every walk of our life.
In every inch of our body, science is the protagonist.

There are different types of science:

1. Physical Science : Physics, Chemist ry, Ast ronomy and Eart h science are branches of physical
sciences.

2. Life Science : Biology and Social sciences are branches of life sciences.

3. Applied Science : Engineering and Healt h care are branches of applied sciences.

Science is involved in cooking, eat ing, breat hing, driving, playing, et c. The fabric we wear, t he
brush and past e we use, t he shampoo, t he t alcum powder, t he oil we apply, everyt hing is t he
consequence of advancement of science. Life is unimaginable wit hout all t his, as it has become
a necessit y.

Basic science concepts behind few daily applications of science

Cooking : Heat energy is t ransformed t o t he cooking vessel in t he form of radiat ion, conduct ion
and convect ion. Aft er t he heat energy is passed t he various ingredient s like, salt , sugar or any
edible mat erial st art s breaking bonds and forms new bonds which gives us delicious food.
Therefore, physics as well as chemist ry is involved. In order t o prepare t he perfect delicacy, t he
perfect proport ions of t he ingredient s are very import ant . Hence mat hs plays a major role t oo.

The food which we consume, when ent ering int o our body, undergoes many chemical react ions
which is t he reason for our energy. The chemically react ed food int eract s wit h various cells
present in our body and t hese cells t ransfer t he prot eins, carbohydrat es and fat s present in t he
food t o our body t hrough various mechanisms. Biology as well as chemist ry is involved in t his
process.

Vehicles : The fuel in t he vehicles are burnt in order for t he vehicle t o get energy. The concept
involved in t he burning of t he fuel is combust ion. The conversion of heat energy int o elect rical
energy and mechanical energy t akes place. Hence chemist ry and physics are involved.

Household appliances:

Mixer / Juicer :It convert s t he elect rical energy int o mechanical energy. It uses t he principle of
cent rifugal force.

Refrigerator : Elect rical energy is convert ed t o heat energy where cooling t akes place.

Air Conditioner : It keeps us cool in summers.
