CIRCLE
Circle

A Circle is a conic section that is

formed by intersecting a cone
with a plane that is
perpendicular to the axis of the
cone.
Circle
It is a set of all points that are
equidistant from a fixed point
called the center. The distance
from the center to any point on
the circle is called the RADIUS
of the circle, denoted by r,
where r > 0.
Standard form of the Equation of a Circle

The standard equation of a circle can be

derived using the distance formula.
𝑑 = 𝑥2 − 𝑥1 2 + 𝑦2 − 𝑦1 2

Let the center C of a circle be located at

point (h,k) and the radius be equal to r.
Also, let the point P(x,y) be any point on
the circle.
Standard form of the Equation of a Circle

Then the distance from C to P is r, that is

The standard equation of a circle can be
derived using the distance formula.
r= 𝑥−ℎ 2+ 𝑦−𝑘 2

Squaring both sides of the equation leads to

r2 = (x – h)2 + (y – k)2
Standard Equation of a Circle
Let’s try these!

Given the center and radius, it would be easy to determine the equation of the circle.

Example 1. Determine the standard equation of the circle given the

coordinates of its center and its radius.
a. Center at (2, -3) and r = 3
1 1
b. Center at , and r = 3
2 4
Solution
Example 1. Determine the standard equation of the circle given the
coordinates of its center and its radius.
a.Center at (2, -3) and r = 3
h k
Solution
Since h = 2, k = -3, and r = 3, then substitute these given information on
the equation of the circle.
r2 = (x – h)2 + (y – k)2
32 = (x – 2)2 + (y – (-3))2

(x – 2)2 + (y + 3)2 = 9
Solution
Example 1. Determine the standard equation of the circle given the
coordinates of its center and its radius.
1 1
a.Center at , and r = 6
2 4
h k
Solution
1 1
Since h = , k = , and r = 6, then substitute these given information on the
2 4
equation of the circle.
r2 = (x – h)2 + (y – k)2
1 2 1 2
62 = (x – ) + (y – )
2 4
1 2 1 2
(x – ) + (y – ) = 36
2 4
Solution
Example 2. Given the standard equation, find the coordinates of the
center and the radius of the following circles.

a. (x + 9)2 + (y – 1)2 = 25

(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2

Center is (h,k)

Thus, the center is at (-9,1) and r = 5

Solution
Example 2. Given the standard equation, find the coordinates of the
center and the radius of the following circles.

a. (x + 6)2 + y2 = 15

(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2

Center is (h,k)

Thus, the center is at (6,0) and r = 15

Your turn!

1. Determine the standard equation of the circle given the coordinates of

its center and its radius.
a. Center at (-1, 8) and r = 7
Solution
Example 1. Determine the standard equation of the circle given the
coordinates of its center and its radius.
a.Center at (-1, 8) and r = 7
h k
Solution
Since h = -1, k = 8, and r = 7, then substitute these given information on
the equation of the circle.
r2 = (x – h)2 + (y – k)2
72 = (x – (-1))2 + (y – 8)2

(x + 1)2 + (y - 8)2 = 49
