1. Objective:
The World Health Organization has made the assessment that COVID-19 cab be characterized as a
pandemic. However, this is the first pandemic in history that could be controlled. Therefore, there are
steps that can be taken by construction site managers to protect themselves and those onsite during this
coronavirus crisis.
Summary:
A novel (new) strain of coronavirus which originated in Hubei Province, China in 2019 can cause a respiratory
disease called COVID-19. It is important for all Katerra workers and Managers to identify and manage work
health and safety risks including the exposure to COVID-19. Katerra plans to respond to cases of COVID-19 at
work in line with advice provided by Saudi Ministry of Health and Katerra Management.

Planning and preparing

Planning and communication are key when it comes to effective project management. Although dealing
with the Covid-19 outbreak is unchartered territory for managers, speaking with workers, letting them
know what is happening and ensuring them that their safety is the top priority is extremely important
moving forward.

The most important steps - following HSE advice on construction sites

Whilst it is crucial that you are prepared for delays and disruption to projects, safety should be at the top
of your list as project manager and leader. Follow and keep up to date with the official advice from
Ministry of Health. To protect yourself and others from coronavirus, it is so important to know how the
virus is spread.

Spreading of COVID-19:

COVID-19 spreads from person to person in a similar way to the flu:

1. From close contact with an infected person

2. From touching objects or surfaces contaminated by the sneeze or cough of an infected person and then
touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

“Coronavirus is spread in sneeze or cough droplets. To infect you, it has to get from an infected person's
nose or mouth into your eyes, nose or mouth. This can be direct or indirect (on hands, objects, surfaces).
Keep this in mind. It will help you remember all the things you need to do to protect yourself and others
from the virus.”

Document No: KAT-HSSE-Z-DOC-005 Developmental Housing Project of Saudi Arabia

Date: 07/04/2020 Revision: 0

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health have issued important advice on how to stop the spread of coronavirus.
Managers should follow this as strictly as possible and communicate this advice with workers so that they
are following more hygienic procedures onsite and are more protected from the disease. The official
advice includes:

 Washing your hands properly and often.

 Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough and sneeze.
 Not touching your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
 Putting used tissues into a bin and then washing your hands.
 Cleaning and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
 Avoiding close contact with people who are not well.
 Not sharing objects that touch your mouth such as bottles, cups etc.
 Staying at home if you are sick to help stop the spread of whatever infection you may have.

Site managers must meet with workers and discuss and implement these procedures onsite. Similarly,
there should be an in-depth discussion of coronavirus symptoms and the plans that are in place if workers
should display any symptoms. It can take up to 14 days for these to appear. The most common
coronavirus symptoms include:

COVID-19 Symptoms:
 Any kind of cough
 shortness of breath
 breathing difficulties
 Fever (High temperature)

4
Document No: KAT-HSSE-Z-DOC-005 Developmental Housing Project of Saudi Arabia

Date: 07/04/2020 Revision: 0

If you or anyone else onsite should show any of these symptoms and has been to a place where there is
spread of coronavirus in the kingdom the advice you need to follow and give to others can be
found below. Similarly, anyone with these symptoms who has been in close contact with a confirmed case
in the last 14 days should follow the official advice from reputed hospitals.

People at high risk of COVID- 19:

People at increased risk of serious illness include the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions
(e.g. diabetes, heart and lung disease) or a weakened immune system.

It is important to remember that most people who become ill with respiratory symptoms at work are likely
suffering from a cold, the flu or other respiratory illness – not COVID-19.

2. Overview

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It's caused by a virus called coronavirus.

Symptoms of coronavirus

It can take up to 14 days for symptoms of coronavirus to appear. They can be similar to the symptoms of
cold and flu.

Common symptoms of coronavirus include:

 a fever (high temperature - 38 degrees Celsius or above)

 a cough - this can be any kind of cough, not just dry
 shortness of breath (breathing difficulties)

5

For people who get infected with coronavirus: (who Records)

 80% will have mild illness and make a full recovery within a few weeks
 14% will have a more severe illness
 6% will have a critical illness

Protect yourself and others from coronavirus:

Keep maintain social distancing during working hours on site.

It’s important to practice social distancing and wash your hands properly and often.

Restricted movements and self-isolation:

To help stop the spread of coronavirus everyone has been asked to restrict your unnecessary movement.

Work in one place don’t collapsed with other workers and advice same for your colleague.

You may need to either:

 restrict your movements further

 self-isolate ( if you feel sick)

You do these things to stop other people from getting coronavirus.

Testing

Visit nearest Saudi Arabia government hospital.

Treatment

Adequate treatment will be provided by health care centers.

At-risk groups:

There are some groups of people who may be at risk of serious illness if they catch coronavirus. This is
similar to other infections such as flu.

People in these at-risk groups immediately report to hospitals and Administrator should follow the case.

6

Date: 07/04/2020 Revision: 0

Cocooning:

Cocooning means protecting people over 70 years of age, people who are extremely medically vulnerable
they should stay at home. If you are in one of these groups, you must take extra care to reduce
interaction with other people. Do not go outside your home and garden.

Pregnancy and coronavirus:

When you are pregnant, your body naturally weakens your immune system. This is to help your
pregnancy continue successfully. It means that when you are pregnant you may pick up infections more
easily.

All pregnant women should get medical advice even if staying in home.

Children and coronavirus:

Around the world, very few cases of coronavirus have been reported in children. Children can sometimes
get the virus. But they seem to get a milder infection than adults or older people do.

Children may also play a big role in spreading the virus. That’s why they should stay away from at-risk
groups, such as people over the age of 60. This is because older people, or people in at risk groups, might
have a harder time fighting the virus.

Encourage your child to wash their hands regularly and properly.

Site Worker must stay away from the kids when you are going to home from the offices.

Travel and coronavirus:

No travel encourages.

If you have symptoms of coronavirus:

Inform your site Manager and Administrator wait for emergency services.

Summary of Coronavirus per the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
A novel (new) coronavirus is causing an outbreak of respiratory illness that began in the
city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. This outbreak began in early December 2019 and
continues to grow. Initially some patients were linked to the Wuhan South China Seafood
City (also called the South China Seafood Wholesale Market and the Hua Nan Seafood
Market). Chinese health officials have reported thousands of cases in the city of Wuhan
and severe illness has been reported, including deaths. Cases have also been identified in
travelers from Wuhan to other parts of China and the world, including the United States.
We expect more cases to be confirmed. Person-to-person spread is occurring though it’s
unclear how easily this virus is spreading between people at this time.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. There are several known coronaviruses that
infect people and usually only cause mild respiratory disease, such as the common cold.
However, at least two previously identified coronaviruses have caused severe disease —
severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus and Middle East respiratory
syndrome (MERS) coronavirus.

Signs and symptoms of this illness include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. This
novel coronavirus has the potential to cause severe disease and death. Preliminary
information suggests older adults and people with underlying health conditions or
compromised immune systems may be at higher risk of severe illness from this virus. Many
characteristics of this novel coronavirus and how it may affect people are still unclear.

In response to this outbreak, Chinese officials are screening travelers leaving the city of
Wuhan. Several countries and territories throughout the world are reported to have
implemented health screening of travelers arriving from Wuhan or mainland China..

On arrival to the United States, travelers from Wuhan may undergo health screening,
including having their temperature taken and being asked to fill out a symptom
questionnaire. Travelers with signs and symptoms of illness (fever, cough, or difficulty
breathing) will have an additional health assessment. Travelers could be subject to potential
quarantine in China or the USA.

Travel
CDC reports that there could be limited access to adequate or Western medical care in
affected areas, so Katerra recommends the following:
• Travelers to avoid all travel to mainland China.

katerra.com
Memo • Travelers to avoid all nonessential travel to Hong Kong. If travel is required, written
approval from your Supervisor and Global Security Manager, James Thomas, is
required.
• Information for travelers is available at wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/watch/novel-
coronavirus-china.
• If you recently have been to or are in an affected area, been in contact with
someone from the affected areas or have any of the symptoms listed above, please
notify your Supervisor, Global Security, Health & Safety to make them aware and
plan to work from home for a minimum of 2 weeks.
• Prior to travel check all Travel Advisories and Alerts. Monitor all changing
conditions in destination cities.

animals (such as uncooked meat).
• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-
based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
• Older adults and travelers with underlying health issues may be at risk for more
severe disease and should discuss travel to Wuhan with their healthcare provider.

If you traveled to Hubei Province, China, including Wuhan, in the last 14 days and feel
sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, you should:
• Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency
room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.

Summary of Coronavirus per the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
A novel (new) coronavirus, now called COVID -19, is causing an outbreak of respiratory
illness and has resulted in the deaths of approximately 3000 individuals to date. This
outbreak began in early December 2019 in China and continues to grow. Chinese officials
report that sustained person-to-person spread in the community is occurring in China. In
addition, other destinations have apparent community spread, meaning some people have
been infected who are not sure how or where they became infected.

Signs and Symptoms: This illness may include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. This
novel coronavirus has the potential to cause severe disease and death. Preliminary
information suggests older adults and people with underlying health conditions or
compromised immune systems may be at higher risk of severe illness from this virus. Many
characteristics of this novel coronavirus and how it may affect people are still unclear.

Risk Assessment: The potential public health threat posed by COVID-19 is high globally,
but individual risk is dependent on exposure.
• For those who are unlikely to be exposed to this virus at this time, the immediate
health risk is considered low.
• Under current circumstances, certain people will have an increased risk of
infection, for example healthcare workers caring for patients with COVID-19 and
other close contacts of persons with COVID-19.

COVID-19 Information & Resources
Advisory

To: Katerra Prevention is key to avoid getting the Coronavirus, COVID-19. Katerra has pulled together
some information and resources to help us all do our part to get ready and stay healthy.
From: Security + Health,
Safety, Environmental, & Environmental Cleaning & Disinfection Recommendations
Quality Departments From the CDC, “There is much to learn about the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus
disease 2019 (COVID-19). Based on what is currently known about the virus, spread from
person-to-person happens most frequently among close contacts (within about 6 feet). This
type of transmission occurs via respiratory droplets. Transmission of novel coronavirus to
persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented. Transmission
of coronavirus in general occurs much more commonly through respiratory droplets than
through fomites. Current evidence suggests that novel coronavirus may remain viable for
hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces
followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral
respiratory illnesses in community settings.”

The CDC has some useful tips on how to clean and disinfect, as well as some other detailed
links. Some highlights include the following:
• If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water
prior to disinfection.
• For disinfection, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least
70% alcohol, and most common EPA-registered household disinfectants should be
effective.
• Protecting Your Home
• Interim Recommendations: Households with Suspected/Confirmed Cases
• Approved EPA Cleaning Products
