TALIBAN ANNIVERSARY (‫)اطابلنیکربسی‬

A year ago on this day, the Afghan Taliban rolled into Kabul as ‫ےک‬

the Western-backed government fell like a house of cards, and

its foreign benefactors beat a hasty retreat after a 20-year
occupation of Afghanistan. The hard-line movement’s report ‫اسل‬

ways the ‘new’ Taliban are very much like the ‘old’ Taliban, in ‫وکحتم‬

Of course, amongst the areas where the Taliban rulers have

allow secondary schools for girls to reopen, while restrictions
on women’s freedom of movement remain. Moreover, the ‫دڑھےےنڑلویکںےکڈنکیسریاوکسولں وکدوابرہوھکےنلیکااجزتدےنیےس ااکنررکےت‬

to participate in government, and the country is very much
being run by the Taliban’s inner circle. As for the international ‫اخمفل‬

foreign militants in the country, including those belonging to

the self-styled Islamic State group and the banned TTP. In
addition, the killing of Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in ‫ےہ۔‬

an affluent Kabul suburb [An outlying part of a city or town]

last month in an American drone strike did little to convince

to fighting terrorism. Despite all these grim ‫ نیگنس‬considerations, ‫ےک‬

the fact is that the Taliban are a reality — an unpleasant one —

that cannot be wished away by the international community.
Therefore, to ensure stability in Afghanistan, as well as ‫رکیتکس۔اسےیلااغفنااکحتسم اورالعاقیئ السیتموک ربرقار رےنھک ےکےیلریغیکلم اطوتقں وک‬
regional security, foreign states will have to work with the
‫اسھتاعتونرکےنیکرضورتوہیگ۔‬ ‫لبقتسمرقبیےکےیلاطابلنےک ی‬
Taliban for the foreseeable ‫ وتمعق‬future.

turn Afghanistan into a Western-style liberal democracy is the

stuff of fantasy ‫دویاےن اک وخاب‬. In fact, pushing the Taliban to the

The way forward, therefore, must be pragmatic ‫تقیقح دنسپاہن‬. The ‫ڈاانل‬

girls’ right to education, and women’s rights to work, free

space for foreign militants in Afghanistan, while the Taliban

involve more of the country’s groups and tribes, and eventually ‫رپاین‬

to a degree that has given ammunition to the PTI to accuse it of ‫اسیجہکاقونن ےکاطمقباعریضوطررپ لطعمےیک اجاناچےئہ اھت۔ہیابتاناقلبرتددی‬،‫اھتای‬
‘fascism’ and disregard of constitutional rights. Given
that ARY News after some initial hesitation had on air ‫ےہ ہک لنیچ ےک رپوڈنگیپا ےک رحےب اور ےب اینبد ازلاامت اگلےن اک راحجن وج یھبک اھبکر‬
denounced [Publicly declare to be wrong or evil] Dr Gill’s ‫ولوگں یک زدنویگں وک یھب رطخے ںیم ڈالدےتی ںیہ االخیق احصتف ےک اینبدی ایعمرات یک‬
remarks, the government’s cancellation of the NOC leading to
a revocation of the channel’s licence constitutes a direct attack ‫الخفورزیرکےتںیہ۔‬
on press freedom. At best, ARY News should have been
reprimanded [A formal expression of disapproval] or, as per ‫ی‬
law, suspended for a brief period. Certainly, the channel’s
propagandist approach and habit of making unfounded
allegations that sometimes even put people’s lives at risk
violates the very principles of ethical journalism.

If the extent of sexual violence against women and children is ‫رپ‬

national newspapers is enough to send chills down one’s spine
[To make someone feel very thrilled, frightened]. Their pages ‫لسلسم‬

these segments of the populace. However, the most consistent

public outrage ‫صغ‬‫ مغ و ی‬is often not about the above-mentioned

women who were subjected to sexual violence, 47 were from

at an event in Karachi said that while 2m images of child
sexual abuse were uploaded in 2021 in the country, ‘only’ 343 ‫اسیج‬

material possessions? The misguided sense of shame which
