CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem,

scope and delimitations, definition of terms and conceptual framework.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

South Korea is one in the countries of the world that has a dedicated goal to

become the world’s leading exporter of popular culture. The increasingly popularity of

Korean culture also known as Korean Wave is spreading throughout the mass media. Just

by tapping on networking services or video streaming, The Korean Wave culture is now

enjoying high popularity outside Korea and this is how Korean Wave occur. Korean

Wave or “Hallyu” refers to the global popularity of South Korea’s cultural economy

exporting pop culture, entertainment, music, TV dramas and movies as well as the latest

fashion, food, appliances and cosmetics expanding to things like dance tourism and

language.

According to Martinez the writer of Kimmy Dora illustrates that: Filipinos like

Korea films because they are fresher, less formulated and with a degree of violence and

eroticism that appeals to local audience, who are just being bombarded by teenybopper

and romantic comedies in their local cinemas”. The youths are the one who are most

influenced by the Korean Wave and one of those are the Filipino youth.

The new generation today is different and they are easily captured to the thing

around them. These youths are exposed to the different kinds and genres of music,

television, dramas and also in their taste of fashion. Now and then, the taste of music,

movies and fashion has been changed, improved and made more exciting in the eye of

Filipino Youth. Everywhere you will go, in schools, Malls, stores, while riding a jeepney

and even to recreational places such as parks and also to tourist places, you can see the

effects of Korean Wave in the Filipino especially to the Filipino Youth. In going to

school you can easily see that Korean Sensations are almost everywhere. You can notice

that students are listening and singing songs in different language (Korean Language) that

they don’t know what’s the meaning of it, they also talk about their Korean favourite

dramas then admire the actors and actresses in the movie and sometimes impersonate

their looks (Santamaria, 2012). It is in the light that the purpose of this study is to

determine the effects of Korean Wave to the Senior high school at the College Of Maasin

female student’s lifestyle.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aimed to determine the effects of Korean Wave to Female Senior High

School students at the College of Maasin.

Specifically this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the perceived impact of Korean Wave of the College Of Maasin Female

Students in terms of:

a.) Entertainment

b.) Language

c.) Food

d.) Fashion

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study is a correlational research focusing on the effects of Korean Wave to 5

selected senior high school grade 11 students in each section at The College of Maasin.

Accountancy Business and Management (ABM 1-2), Science Technology Engineering

and Mathematics (STEM 1-2) Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL 1-2) Humanities

and Social Sciences (HUMSS 1-4).

Moreover, the study delimits itself in determining the effects of Korean Wave to the

Senior High School female students at The College of Maasin and will not attempt to

measure any variable beyond the scope of the limitation. The factor that affects the

respondents will be limited only to Korean entertainment, language, food and fashion and

will exclude the other factors.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study shall be able to contribute researched-based data and knowledge on the

possible relationship between the exposure to Korean Wave and the current lifestyle of

female students at The College of Maasin.

More specifically, this study shall be beneficial to the various groups of people.

Students

Will gain knowledge about the effects of Korean Wave either it would be positive or

negative.

Parents

They will be aware of the negative and positive effects of Korean Wave and by that,

they can help and guide their children‘s exposure to Korean Wave.

Future Researcher

The findings and result of the study will serve a great way of interest that future

researchers can possibly study into.

Bombarded - highly influenced

Eroticism - a quality that causes sexual feelings.

Impersonate - pretend to be (another person) as entertainment

Teenybopper - a young teenager who follows adolescent trends in music, fashion and

culture

The effects of Korean Wave towards the College of Maasin female students will be

described in terms of four sub-variables: (a) Korean entertainment (b) Korean language

(c) Korean food (d) Korean fashion. In the research, this variable is seen to possess a

hypothesized relationship with senior high school grade 11 female students lifestyle. This

hypothesized relationship is presented by the two headed arrow connecting both

variables.
