TO THE FILIPINO YOUTH

Joaquin, Nicomedes. 1879. To the Filipino Youth. Manila Lyceum of Art and Literature

Nicomedes “Nick” "Onching" M. Joaquin was born in Paco, Manila, on May 4, 1917. His mother
was a public school teacher, while his father served as a colonel in the Philippine Revolution of 1896.
In 1934, Nick Joaquin began writing essays, poetry, and short stories. A clever young man who did not
complete high school found that he could learn more by reading books on his own, and his father's
collection had a large number of the books he wants to read. Over the course of his whole life, he wrote so
many different things on so many different aspects of the Filipino. He assisted in creating and served as the
union's leader for the pre-martial law Philippines Free Press members. Unknown to the public, Joaquin
produced articles for the clandestine press during that dark time opposing Martial Law. He won national
recognition with his essay La Naval de Manila in a competition sponsored by the Dominican Fathers in
1943. The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) later gave him an Associate in Arts credential in recognition of
his literary skills.

Dr. Jose Rizal's poem "To the Filipino Youth" is largely intended to convey the value of one's love
and admiration for his dialect or language, as it serves as a bridge and gateway linking countries and
people. Rizal's thinking in the poem pertains to the importance of youth in country development. The poem
had a big impact on the Spaniards because it depicted true nationalism in the Philippines, inspiring the
youth to rise above fear and address the country's current challenges. Dr. Jose Rizal is inspiring every
Filipino youngster to join, unite, and work together for the country's "CHANGE." The poem has sociological
consequences since it displays poetry's ability to affect society, specifically the youth of the Country. The
poem intends to convey the message that Jose Rizal, also, wishes for young Filipinos to grow and make
the best use of their abilities and talents. We, the next generation, will shine brightly as the visions of the
future if we continue help ourselves and our country thrive.

RIZAL’S LIFE, WORKS, AND WRITING

Dr. Jose Rizal dedicated his poem "To the Filipino Youth" to the youth of the Philippines. He
wished for the Young Filipinos to use their abilities, talents, and skills to distinguish themselves for their
own honor and triumph, as well as the praise and success of their country, the Philippines. Dr. Jose Rizal
also wished for the youth to develop their skills and use them to help those in need. Furthermore, in this
poem, Dr. Jose Rizal encouraged the young to polish and improve their creative ability, reenergize and
strengthen their knowledge, and look ahead and break their chain of enslavement.

Filipinos need to influence their fellow youth who have developed undesirable habits to change
their ways. We always need to remember that everything is open to change. It is still possible to make a
difference. I am well aware that our progress will be difficult, but not unattainable. We must show them that
we live up to Dr. Jose Rizal's ideals, that we are the hope of the future. If we have an optimistic outlook, we
may learn from the difficulties that we are experiencing and become better citizens of our nation. We must
cherish our education, as Dr. Jose Rizal teaches to us. Only through education can we become the youth
our national hero envisions for us.

Dr. Jose Rizal in his poem encourages each of us to continue our efforts because he thinks that
today's and tomorrow's youth will serve as a light to their fellow countrymen. Our hero also adds that "the
country is waiting for us to make a change," and that the youth will take the initiative since they are
equipped with the necessary knowledge, power, and voice in the country. We must reveal our honest
feelings to all people. We have understanding of science and the arts that we may put to good use in order
to attain our country's goals.
