To the Filipino Youth
Rizal wrote this literary poem when he was still studying at the University of Sto.
Tomas (UST). Originally written in Spanish (A la juventud filipina), Rizal submitted this
piece for a poem contest organized for Filipinos by the Manila Lyceum of Art and

What message does the author want to impart to the Filipino youth of today?
Rizal: The poem “To the Filipino Youth” by Dr. Jose Rizal is a message primarily to tell
the importance of one's love and appreciation to his dialect or language, for it is the
bridge and intermediary connecting people's country to each other. In the poem, Rizal
praised the rising generation.
This poem was written in honor of his mother's birthday as suggested by the terms
“perfume of the flowers”, “the songs of the birds”, “feast your day of bloom” and “festive
day”. Jose Rizal's poetic verses show his eternal love and appreciation for his

Jose Rizal wrote the poem "My Fellow Children" to inspire the youth to use their
talents and be the best they can be. He also wrote it to encourage the youth to be
proud of being who they are and the first step to do that is to use their mother tongue or
native language in communicating or speaking.
It was with this joyous thought of resuming his travels that he wrote his heart-warming
poem "El Canto del Viajero"(The song of the Traveler). Rizal wrote a letter to Gov.
Gen. Ramon Blanco December 17, 1895, offering his services as a military doctor in
Cuba
The poem tells us how. ... education is important to every human, because
without education we cannot reach our goals in life. Aside from that it is also one of the most
effective way to make our country proud and no one can steal it to us.
