HST198 Research Methodology Essay — A Toponymic Study: Place Names of Select

Barangays in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte

A qualitative research has been conducted to meet the objectives of the dissertation.
Qualitative research is characterized mainly by its suitability being useful to the research —
place naming origins which mainly relies on oral interviews. But the effectiveness of a
qualitative research approach could only be based on researchers' skills and abilities, while
results cannot be seen as reliable since they are mainly derived from researchers' personal
opinions and interpretations.While a qualitative research is mostly descriptive as such to be used
in any historical research, the research’s methodology aim to integrate the formula needed for
research’s substantial gathering of information. The data collected from personal interviews were
analyzed using content analysis. The content analysis gives researchers the ability to structure the
quality data collected to meet research goals. 1
The research method we have adopted for this analysis is largely based on interview data
collection. The study is primarily directed towards investigating and determining oral interviews
within the localities of the above-mentioned municipality by the selection of people who know
the history of the particular barangays of Kapatangan Lanao del Norte. Data concerning the place
name or the origin of the place itself shall be obtained from the documents and legal papers of
the barangay hall. In addition, it will analyze the origin and importance of the place names and
how it affects the individuals and the respective communities in order to interpret information
acquired together with written documents. The application approval documents for the conduct
of the study and for confidentiality of the identitude of the interviewee during the research
should therefore be followed by ethical considerations.
This study further demonstrates the importance of obtaining information about your
place's history and how this place affects the sense of naming of the people. It should also
assume the responsibility of taking over the heritage of the place-name and ensure that the
place-name plan is carried out in a way that preserves name functions and safeguards cultural
heritage in a changing society.
