is not visible from the earth because the side of the moon that is facing us is
not being lit by the sun.

 When part of the moon facing the Earth is all white it is called Full Moon. This
happen a week after the first quarter. The full moon appears as an entire
circle in the sky.

 When small amount at the edge of the moon is lighted it is called Crescent
Moon. The moon is is less than half-lit. this is because the moon is between
the appearance of the quarter moon and new moon.

 When more than half of the moon is lighted it is called Gibbous Moon. The
moon is between quarter moon and full moon.
