Assignment 2 Solution
Q1. A potential field is given as,
V = 2 x 2 y − 5z
(a) Find the potential at a point P(-4,3,6)
(b) Find the electric field intensity at point Q(0,0,1).
(c) Find the electric flux density at S(0.1,0)
(d) Find the volume charge density at (0,2,0).
Solution :
(a) Potential at P(-4,3,6) , Vp = 2(−4) (3) − 5(6) = 66V

 
At Q(0,0,1). E(0,0,1) = z5

(c) D = ε 0 { − x (4 xy) − y (2 x 2 ) + z5 }
  
At S(0.1,0) , E = −2ε 0 y + 5ε 0 z

(d) ρ v = ∇. D = - 35.4y pC/m3
At (0,2,0), ρv=-35.4×2=-70.8 pC/m3

Q2. Two spheres of capacitance C1 and C2 and of potentials V1 and V2 are

connected with a thin wire. If V1 > V2 . Show that
C1C2
(a) the charge transferred from first to the second = (V1 − V2 )
C1 + C2
C1C2
(b) energy loss due to redistribution of charges = (V1 − V2 ) 2
2 ( C1 + C2 )
Solution:
C1 C2

Charge before connecting: q1=C1V1 q2= C2V2

Let, common potential after connecting = V
Charge after connecting:
q1 ' = C 1 V
q2'=C2V
Now,
q1 + q2 = q1' + q2'
⇒ C1V1 + C2V2 = C1V + C2V
C V + C2V2
⇒ V =1 1
C1 + C2
(a) Charge transfer =
q1 − q1'
= C1V1 − C1V
= C1 (V1 − V )
