ACTIVITY TITLE: Virtual Lab: Animal and Plant Tissues

LEARNING TARGET:
 Define tissues
 Compare and contrast the different tissues found in animals and plants
 Explain the importance of taking care of specific tissues found in the organs of animals and
plants.

INSTRUCTION:
Using the links below, explore the different types of tissues of plants and animals. Paste a picture of
each of the types of tissues in the box below. Answer the guide questions below in completing your
activity sheet.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What are the main features/ structures of the animal and plant tissues?
Plant structure is different from the animal skeletal structure. A plant tissue is different from
those in animals. Plant tissues are basically divided into two. Meristematic tissue and
Permanent tissue. These tissues comprise of cells which have the dividing capacity. They are
immature and help plants to divide continuously throughout the life. Depending on the site of
location, it is of three types. Apical, lateral and intercalary meristems. These meristems enlarge
the cell and increase the length and width of the stem, roots and leaves. Permanent tissues
are derivative of meristematic tissue. They don’t have the dividing capability but aid in other
functions like conduction of substances, storage of food etc. Two types of permanent tissues
are found in plants i.e. simple and complex permanent tissue. Simple permanent tissues
include parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma while complex tissues are xylem and
phloem.
2. What is/are the functions of each?

Permanent tissue primarily serves to provide support, defense as well as photosynthesis and
conduction of water, minerals and nutrients. It has three types, first is the dermal tissue that
cover and protect the surface of the different plant organs. Second, the fundamental tissue that
has a three types, the Parenchyma, Collenchyma, and Sclerenchyma cells that serves as a
site for photosynthesis, food storage, provides supporting matrix for the vascular and helps to
store water and sugars. Lastly, the Vascular tissues that has a two types, the Xylem and
Phloem vessel where it transports water, minerals, and sugars to different parts of the plants.
Meristematic tissues are responsible for plant growth. They are present at the tips of roots,
stem and branches. The cells present in these tissues constantly divide to produce new cells.
This leads to an increase in the height and girth of plants. Meristematic tissues are
characterized by the following features: The cells actively divide to produce new cells, the cells
are generally small and the cell walls are thin and the cells have large nuclei and vacuoles are
absent.

1. How is this increasing complexity of the level of organization of an animal/plant body important
in the overall wellness of organisms? Answer not in more than 5 sentences.

It is important in terms of the organisms’ wellness. The increasing complexity of the level of
organization of an animal or plant affects the organism’s population. Furthermore, various
species has their degree of organization because without it, the organisms will suffer. The final
and most complex level of organization in animals is the organism. Organisms are entire living
things that perform basic life processes. Organisms take in materials, release energy from
food, release wastes, grow, respond to the environment, and reproduce.
