TINEA CORPORIS

Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that can cause dermatophytosis.

Dermatophysis or eczema is an inflammation that can attack the skin organs caused
by exposure to external irritants or allergies. Dermatosis is divided into several types
based on different causes, namely, atopic dermatosis, contact dermatosis, dyshidrotic
dermatosis, nummular dermatosis, neurodermatitis, static dermatitis, and seborrheic
dermatitis. Dermatophytosis is one of the divisions based on the location of the part of
the human body that is attacked, one of which is Tinea Corporis disease, which is
dermatophytosis that attacks glabrous skin areas, such as the face, body, arms and
legs. Tinea corporis has symptoms in the form of itching, especially in sufferers when
sweating.

Tinea corporis or ringworm is a superficial dermatophyte infection caused by a

common fungus that mimics many other annular lesions. This disease is commonly
known by the public as ringworm. Tinea corporis has signs of inflammation or injury to
the glabrous skin. Tinea corporis occurs in both men and women, occurs in all age
groups, but the incidence is highest in adolescents. Symptoms of tinea corporis usually
begin to appear 4–14 days after the body is exposed to the fungus. Tinea corporis
usually appears as patches or plaques, with prominent edges.

Tinea corporis is usually caused by Trichophyton rubrum, T. tonsurans, and

Microsporum cranis. However, Trichophyton rubrum is one of the most common
dermatophytes causing tinea corporis. Dermatophytes that cause tinea corporis belong
to the genera Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum. Infection usually
occurs by direct contact with skin from soil, animal, or other human skin. This disease
is often seen in areas with hot and humid climates. Like other fungal infections, warm
and humid conditions help spread the infection. Therefore, tropical and subtropical
regions have high cases of tinea corporis.

Everyone is not equally susceptible to fungal infections, and there is a familial

and genetic predisposition. Some other predisposing factors include underlying
diseases such as diabetes mellitus, lymphoma, excessive sweating, or old age. The
currently held view is that cell-mediated immune responses are responsible for
controlling the dermatophysis.
