A. INTRODUCTION

C May said that “any

definition of sport can be
contentious, hence sport can
be referred to as human
activity which involves
physical exertion and skills as
the primary focus of the
activity with elements of
competition or social
participation where rules and
pattern of behaviour
governing the activity exist formally through organisation”. As established by World Health
Organisation in 1940’s health is the ability to adopt and manage physical, mental, social
challenges throughout life and the physical body is free form diseases. While wellness is the
overall balance of a person’s physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, environmental
and occupational well-being. This essay is going to discuss how sport, health and wellness
has impacted me socially, morally intellectually and physically. It is going to further clarify
areas of weakness which could and should have been improved by my self’s involvement in
sport and what should be done to increase my rating.

SOCIALLY

Participation in sport, health and wellness have both positive and negative effects to social
life. From sport l learn that team work is important for no man is an island, hence this create
inter-family among the team mates creating a bond and also playing by the rules and
overcoming adversity helps myself to learn good qualities of sportsmanship and personal
responsibilities. Time management and being organised are skills that are developed to
archive athletic and academic results. These benefits transfer to everyday situation providing
social skills that allow me to succeed in the real world. Sport also enhance social and
personal development, they help enhancing leadership skills and in improving capacity for
goal setting and character building. Physical activities can also provide opportunities for
social interaction and can decrease the feeling of loneliness or exclusion. However social
interaction can lead to peer-pressure from other colleques, change in good behaviour and
team mates with more confidence tend to bully other team members leading to low self-
esteem. If also the group does not provide a sense of meaning, belonging and purpose we
tend to have negative psychological consequences.

Participation in sports provides me with opportunities to learn teamwork. Playing as a team

will help me to develop the social skills that i need in life. Teamwork will also teach me to be
less selfish and cooperate. It also teaches to listen to peers which improve my listening and
understanding skills. However, social interaction can lead to peer-pressure from other team
members and team mates with more confidence tend to bully others leading to low self-
esteem

PYSICALLY

Physical benefits of participation in sport, health and wellness are the obvious. One is
physically fit and strong always. Physical fitness helps to strengthen up the body and have a
healthy living habits. Physically fit athletics are even strong at old age hence they combat
major health issues like obesity and heart diseases promoting a very healthy a very long life
which is strong. Sporting develops important habits of regular exercise. Sport can improve
endurance and cardiopulmonary fitness, while providing companionship fitness, a sense of
achievement and highest self-esteem. Sport encourage health eating habits foe wellness. The
positive effects of sport go beyond physical health they influence physical health throughout
my lifetime. Sport helps to build a good health status for myself and good health contributes
to higher standards of living. Even during off train seasons l always train to keep the body in
shape and also knows what type of food to eat for healthy purposes. However, to much of
train may lead to boredom hence there should be different train sections. Training requires
time and this may lead to myself giving little time to academics especial during athletic
period. Most myself ’s grades fall during this time.

ENTERLECTUALY

Intellectual wellness is stimulating the mind for stimulation sake, it keeps one engaged in
meaningful, informed conversation on an ongoing basis. Intellectual wellness has much to do
with perception and those perceptions impact individual behaviour. Social media has helped
myself to know more about all kind of sports one can compete in. Sport helps me to view
situations from more than one point of view, hence even in real life l can use this aspect in
real life situation. Sport not only contribute to physical health but also enhance social and
intellectual development. They helping in enhancing leadership skills and goal setting.
though sports there is good balance in mental health. S Nicholas explained the relationship
between sport and participants He said “sport is a major element in contemporary
participations life. It provides meaning, a sense of belonging and purpose in life. It is
inclusive and embracing in a world where most participants feel alienated. Participants may
use sport to bond with peers, for physical benefits or even just for distraction. The
participants who feel the sense of alienation or the feeling of being different often look for
team sports to provide them with identity and many other benefits. Although there are
positive benefits in sport there can be negative outcome is sport is used incorrectly. I can face
enormous risk from sport due to incomplete physical and emotions developments. Hard
training and healthy eating can cross the line to exhaustion and eating disorder, encouraging
myself to do the best can slip into pushing myself to the point of injury and harm.

MORALLY

Sport has been viewed as a way to stay healthy and fit but sport importance goes much
further. Sport helps in the overall development of myself . Playing sport teaches lessons of
life such as team-work, accountability, self-esteem, responsibility and self-discipline. Sport
activities makes myself acquire ethics, values responsibility, discipline and a sense of
confidence and mutual trust. The sportsmanship spirit helps me more gracefully to deal with
ups and downs of life. I will lead life with good moral and a positive attitude and thus is less
likely to be a victim of social evils. Sport play by the rules hence l should have good ethical
values.

B. AREAS OF WEAKNESS WHICH SHOULD AND COULD HAVE BEEN IMPROVED

BY MY INVOLVEMENT IN SPORT AND WHAT SHOULD BE DONE BE DONE TO
INCREASE MYSELF RATING.

There are limited number of factors which affected my involvement in sport this include
insufficient sport facilities, attachment to sport, commitment to sport game and financial
support. The way l attached myself to sport game affected my participation in the game
reducing my skills in the game. Also the way l was committed to my sport game was of great
influence as sport requires one time and positive attitude to the game. Sport also requires
someone who is goal focused these behavioral attitudes lacked in me as an athletic student.
Lack of financial funds also contribute to how l participate and train to increase my skills,
sometimes l would lack funds to support me hence this lead to sometimes not being able to
physically train myself or not being able compete with my fellow coliguies. According to
Midway and Mwakasangula (2019), mention in a study that parent support to children in
sport also matters henceforth most parents do not want their children to participate in sport
because they think that sport has no future and is time consuming for the child who is
supposed to be reading hence the do not support children both parentally and financially.
Parent support is of great impact to their children hence they should also have knowledge
about sports. Age and gender contributed to my weakness in sport industry. The age limit
had great impact to sport, therefore l could not participate in where l was best in sport but
where my age allowed me to participate in. Gender in many countries contribute most woman
are not allowed to participate in some games hence it is not easy for woman to have a
spotlight we have to fight for it.

Self- determination theory is the human motivation and personality that describe the effects
of social-context determination on human motivation and functions. Self-determination
theory explains more on human theory involvement in sport and steps they take to increase
their rating. Autonomous motivation includes the person’s involvement in an active based on
the willingness and decision of that person (Mahommad and Behzadia,2017). My first step is
to decide the best sport l want without anyone’s control and participate more in it . I am going
to submit more of myself in the sport even if it is time consuming.

Achievement goal theory consider the effect of perception of success versus failure on
motivation which aim to understand individuals view of competence and the role of
involvement or motivational orientation. Hence as a goal achiever l want to do participate in
sport even in the future l will help my parents to understand more about sport so that they
could support me in sport both financially and parentally.

As a goal achiever ,l am going to take more time in physical activities to maintain my

physical body so that l could be a better team player. I am going to devout my time to
practice so that l could be perfect, no one has to make me feel unwanted or helpless.

CONCLUSION

Sport is of great impact not only to me but to the nation as whole. This is because we won’t
be more prone to disease but live a healthy and wellness life. Sport is not only good to
primary, secondary and tertiary students but to also those of old age and disabled one. More
funding should be done to sport and women should also be recognized in sport activities.
Activities of different ages but same time should also be created. This will create a healthy
economy and society. Sport is of positive impact to me and l am going to practice more.
