INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:

• Write your candidate name on the blank above.

• Do not open this examination until instructed to do so.
• A graphic display calculator is required for this paper.
• A clean copy of the Mathematics SL formula booklet is required for this paper.
• Answer all questions.
• Write your answers in the spaces provided.
• Unless otherwise stated in the question, all numerical answers must be given exactly or correct to three
significant figures.

Maximum marks will be given for correct answers. Where an answer is incorrect, some marks may be given
for correct method, provided this is shown by written working. Working may be continued below the box, if
necessary. Solution found from a graphic calculator should be supported by suitable working, e.g. if graphs
are used to find a solution, you should sketch these as part of your answer.
1. The first four terms of an arithmetic sequence are 5, 9, 13, 17...

(a) Write down the common difference.

(b) Calculate the 100th term of this sequence.

(c) Find the sum of the first 100 terms of this sequence.
[5]

2. Find the value of k given that the following

(a) are consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence: k − 1, k + 1, 4k − 2

(b) are consecutive terms of a geometric sequence: k − 2, k, k + 3
