CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

In the National Vocational High School (SMK) Education System, it is one of the sub-
systems that has a direct function and role in the development of human resources, as an
Integral to the Economic Development Program.
As a sub-system of the National Vocational High School (SMK) education system, it
functions to prepare a workforce that has professional abilities. This is done because so far
there are still many vocational lessons carried out in schools that have not yet provided
professional expertise to students.
By following the outline of government policies in the field of education and studying the
current situation in Indonesia, the principle of mastery of professional skills, it is necessary to
apply industrial work (PKL) in the form of industry for vocational high schools in general
and in particular at SMKN 1 Denpasar in accordance with the existing situation and
conditions. .
With industrial work (PKL) students are expected to later gain knowledge from the
business / industry world in addition to the knowledge that can be obtained through school
education.

THEORETICAL STUDY

2.1 General review

• Network

Network (network) is an operating system consisting of a number of computers

and other network devices that work together to achieve a common goal or a network
consisting of points (nodes) that are connected to each other, with or without cable.
Each node serves as a work station (workstations). One of the nodes as a service
media or server, which regulates certain functions of other nodes. Basically,
computer network technology itself is a combination of computer technology and
communication technology.

• Wifi Network

Wifi is short for Wireless Fidelity, which is a wireless data communication

medium that can be used for communication or transferring programs and data with
very fast capabilities. Why so fast? Because the delivery media uses radio signals
that work at a certain frequency.

2.2 Part Names and Functions

How Wifi Works

Wifi network technology works by using radio waves using a Wireless LAN from
a computer, wireless routers play an important role in how the Wifi system works.
This adapter receives data from the computer in digital form. After the data is
converted into radio waves, it is sent to the router via the antenna. The router's
decoding signal sends it to the Internet. This process is returned when information is
sent from the internet to the computer.

• Wifi Device
The devices from a network include the client and server side. Here the author
will only explain on the server side only. The devices that must be provided on
the server side are:

1) Access Points
Access Point is a network device that contains a transceiver and antenna for
transmitting and receiving signals to and from remote clients.

Figure 3.0 Access Point

2) Router
Router is a network device that is used to connect several networks, both the
same network and different in terms of technology such as connecting
networks that use Bus, Star and Ring topologies. The router has at least two
network interfaces.

Figure 3.1 Router

3) OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)

Optical Time-Domain Reflectometeror commonly abbreviated as OTDR, is
an optoelectronic equipment used to measure parameters such as attenuation,
length, scatter and joint loss, in fiber optic telecommunications systems.

Devices and Technical Instructions for Field Work Practice at SMK Negeri 1 Denpasar 9
Figure 3.2 OTDR

How OTDR works

1. The light signals are fed into the optical fiber.

2. Some of the signal is reflected back and received by the receiver.

3. The return signal received will be declared as a loss.

4. The signal travel time is used to calculate the distance.

2.3 Model Construction

In the practical work activities held at PT. Biseka Ubung. For approximately 6 weeks, the
compiler was placed in the Wireless Area Network (WAN) Division. Activities during the
Practical Work include wifi problems, installation of wifi devices, troubleshooting wifi devices,
and overcoming problematic devices. The working hours determined by the agency are from
08.00 to 16.00. During the practical work activities, the authors and colleagues were divided into
several teams according to the specialization theme taken. One team itself consists of 2 to 3
people. The general description of practical work activities for approximately 6 weeks is as
follows:

1) Monitoring Data Disturbance

The compiler was notified that if there was a disturbance, it would appear in the
personal telkom software that there was a place that was experiencing interference, it
could be seen that there was a problem that occurred in the “Mall
Matahari Cilegon” status has been “Resolved” which means the disturbance has been
successfully handled. The categories such as Platinum, Gold, Silver and so on are
priorities.

2) Check ON/OFF Status Via Tenoss

Tenoss is an application owned by telkom, which is an application that is used for
monitoring in more detail, it can be seen in the picture below that if there is a
"Taskname", "Working Time",
“Job Completed Time” to “Last Status” of the device.

Figure 3.4 Tenoss Status

3) Installation of an Omnidirectional Antenna as a Repeater

Here, the compilers are given the opportunity to help build antenna poles and at the
same time install omnidirectional antennas as repeaters to maximize the distance of
50m wifi signal strength in the area. It can be seen that the antenna is combined with
the access point to obtain the maximum distance as shown below

4) Installation of Access Point (AP)

The process of installing this access point is carried out in public areas such as malls,
hospitals, parks, schools and universities. Because the WAN division handles
problems regarding wifi network problems in the
public areas.

5) Repair Access Point (AP)
The process of repairing this access point is done by checking the color produced by
the access point, if it is red it means there is a problem and if it is green or blue the
access point is functioning properly. In the WAN division itself, if the access point
continues to produce a red color, it is required to replace the device with another.

Figure 3.7 Access Point

6) Installation of ONT (Optical Network Terminal)

ONT installation process, ONT is the end point of the optical path itself. It can be seen
as pictured below, the ONT along with the power cable is inserted into the box to
protect against unwanted situations and conditions.

7) Access Point Treatment (AP)
Access point maintenance is not difficult, just clean it using a cloth, see what color the
access point produces, check the status of the access point as shown below and check
periodically whether the device can still be used or has been replaced by a new device.

Figure 3.9 Signal

2.4 Distractions
In the process of the activity, the authors encountered several obstacles, including:
1) The condition of many network devices is no longer suitable for use even though they
can still be used.
2) The availability of limited internet access is certainly very detrimental, especially in the
WAN division which requires internet access.

Meanwhile, in the process of the activity, the authors carried out repairs and installations
at the following locations:
1) Public areas (malls, hospitals, etc.)
2) Educational institutions (schools, universities, etc.)

2.5 Work safety

1. Worker/Student Aspect
The health of workers/students in companies/schools must be properly maintained, because it is
to improve performance so that they become productive and professional workers. The duties
and responsibilities of workers/students are:

 Learn and implement work safety rules and instructions,

 Provide examples of safe working methods to new workers/less experienced students,
 Demonstrate readiness and interest to learn and train themselves on work safety on every job
assignment

2. Work
Work can be completed if there are workers. However, the workers/students do not mean much
if the work carried out is not treated in accordance with the rules/procedures that have been set. It
is intended to:

 Prevent and prevent accidents.

 Maintain the quality of work.
 Does not reduce production
 Does not damage body parts
 Conducting trainings for workers/students in special fields.

Accidents were caused by technical problems and mostly due to fatigue. Fatigue can have an
adverse effect on both the body and the spirit. The bad effect on the body is called
EXHAUSTION, while the bad effect on the spiritual is called NEURASTHENI.

Efforts to prevent/minimize accidents can be done by: a). Organizing work procedures, including
good scheduling and rational working hours as well as periodic breaks between working hours.
b) Implement and comply with school regulations or legislation - length of working hours. c).
Applying work rolling

3. Workplace
The place of work is an important part for a company/school, indirectly the place of work will
affect the pleasure, comfort, and safety of the workers/students. A pleasant (comfortable) and
safe (safe) situation or atmosphere will lead to a passion for work productivity.

Devices and Technical Instructions for Field Work Practice at SMK Negeri 1 Denpasar 1
5
Health efforts that need to be made to the workplace in general are to apply specific workplace
hygiene and sanitation, including:

 The lighting/lighting in the workspace/workshop must be adjusted/regulated according to the

type of work being carried out.
 Air control in the workspace.
 Room temperature in the workspace.
 Air pressure in the workspace.
 Lighting.

The objectives of occupational safety and health are:

1. Protect workers from bad possibilities that may occur due to carelessness of workers/students
2. Maintaining the health of workers/students to obtain optimal work results
3. Reducing illness/death rate among workers.
4. Prevent the emergence of infectious diseases and other diseases caused by fellow workers
5. Fostering and improving physical and mental health
6. Ensuring the safety of everyone in the workplace
7. Production sources are maintained and used safely and efficiently

To carry out this objective, the company/vocational school must provide or create an
occupational health and safety guide, where the job of the worker/student is to use the equipment
and apply it in activities that have been determined by the company/school.

Companies/schools are required to provide protective equipment for occupational health

and safety such as: work clothes/lab coats, flip-flops, plastic shoes, masks, gloves, goggles, first
aid kits and their contents, fire extinguishers, ladders, trash cans, tools and equipment. cleaning
tools and so on. All student workers are required to know the location of fire extinguishers, first
aid kits and know how to use them. To prevent work accidents, all workers/students must
comply with all regulations and procedures for the use of work tools that have been determined
which are guided by applicable laws.

It should be reminded that the consequences of negligence can cause workers/students to

be dismissed from work/school or given a warning. Therefore, workers/students should always
be careful in carrying out their duties, by complying with and carrying out instructions regarding
the use of protective equipment for occupational health and safety. The workplace is kept clean
and tidy to maintain shared health.

3.2 Installation Steps
The size of the signal from the access point is influenced by the distance we access the access
point. If the user is near the access point, the signal will automatically be full as shown above.
Following are the steps for repairing and installing the access point:

1) Prepare the work tools that will be used.

2) Pay attention to the indicator light from the access point, if the light is red, it means the
access point has a problem and if there is no color light, it means that the power access
point or access point is off.
3) Uninstall from the public area, to be checked first.
4) Do a check on the ONT, whether it is still functioning properly or not.
5) If the ONT condition is still functioning properly, check the cable connecting the ONT to
the access point.
6) Replace the cable if the cable is no longer functioning properly.
7) Check the access point, see the port of the access point. If the condition of the access
point is not functioning properly, then the access point should be replaced.
8) Change the access point, before installing it in the public area, check the access point.
9) If the access point is already functioning properly, install it.
10) Installed and then turned on the power from the access point and connected the cable that
connects the ONT with the access point.
11) Wait for the indicator light from the access point to turn green or blue.
12) If the indicator light is green or blue, check the signal strength through the user's device.
13) If the signal strength is very strong if it is near the access point, then the access point can
function properly.
