EXPERIMENT NO. 2
Moment of Forces
Alido, Kevin F.

Introduction

In this experiment is applied on a scale to understand the concept of the moment of force.
Moment of force is also known as Torque. A moment of a force, or a torque, is a measure of a
force's tendency to cause a body to rotate. The moment depends on both the force, and on the
position at which the force acts. In order to do this experiment to generate moment of force. The
goal of this experiment is to calibrate and test a scale which there is weights applied on the
scale at the two different side. It seen that the meter stick is closer on th middle, the scale given
different weights and distance on the middle to balanced the scale.

Methodology

Procedures:

1. Open the link for the virtual experience and simulation on the experiment on system of
forces.
2. Click the “Begin” button to start the virtual lab.
3. The materials needed are presented that will be use in the experiment. Click “Next Step”.
4. Follow and do all Steps 1-14 by proceeding to the next step.

Materials:

 Meter stick
 Hanging clamps
 Support clamp
 Support stand
 Counterweight
 Bond paper
 Calculator

Set up used in experiment:

By using the scale, computes for the Xc using analytical method in getting the moment of
forces, record it to the left column and record the varying weight of the mass at the right colomn
of the table.
Results and Discussion

Table 1 Experimental Data on Moment of Forces

Trial Counterweight (Wc=200g) Weight 1 @ X1= __41___ cm

1 Xc = __41__cm W1 = __300___g
2 Xc = __29__cm W1 = __200___g
3 Xc = __35__cm W1 = __250___g
4 Xc = __15__cm W1 = __100___g
5 Xc = __21__cm W1 = __150___g

∑ Moment of Forces=0
τ =Fxd

To get the change of location Xc on the left column, we need to minus the measure of the
second clamp to the measure of the middle from 0.

For trial 1, 86 cm is the measure of the second clamp minus the measure of the middle 45 cm
86 cm – 45 cm = 41 cm. 41 cm is our answer for the Xc, Xc = 41 cm.

For trial 2, 74 cm is the measure of the second clamp minus the measure of the middle 45 cm
74 cm – 45 cm = 29 cm. 29 cm is our answer for the Xc, Xc = 29 cm.

For trial 3, 80 cm is the measure of the second clamp minus the measure of the middle 45 cm
80 cm – 45 cm = 35 cm. 35 cm is our answer for the Xc, Xc = 35 cm.

For trial 4, 60 cm is the measure of the second clamp minus the measure of the middle 45 cm
60 cm – 45 cm = 15 cm. 15 cm is our answer for the Xc, Xc = 15 cm.

For trial 5, 66 cm is the measure of the second clamp minus the measure of the middle 45 cm
66 cm – 45 cm = 21 cm. 21 cm is our answer for the Xc, Xc = 21cm.
On the right column we need record the masses you used for Trial 1-5, in the first clamp

Trial 1 first clamp counterweight is 300 g

Trial 1 first clamp counterweight is 200 g
Trial 1 first clamp counterweight is 250 g
Trial 1 first clamp counterweight is 100 g
Trial 1 first clamp counterweight is 150 g

Conclusion and Recommendation

Moment of forces or torque it formula is T=fxd.there are forces in our surrounding that we
do not notice. This experiment gives us ideas about the moment of forces, how to solve for it and
how to do it, in calibrating the trials in this experiment. I learn more about the moment of forces
and the analytical method to get the Xc. Remember to follow the procedures before doing this
experiment. Follow every steps and analyze it carefully.
