LET US STUDY

The following are definitions of concepts related to Media and Information Literacy:

Literacy - is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute
using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a
continuum of learning wherein individuals are able to achieve their goals, develop their
knowledge and potential, and participate fully in their community and wider society.

Media - is the physical objects used to communicate with, or the mass communication
through physical objects such as radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to any
physical object used to communicate messages.

Media Literacy - is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a
variety of forms. It aims to empower citizens by providing them with the competencies
(knowledge and skills) necessary to engage with traditional media and new technologies.

Information - is a broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived


from study, experience, instruction, signals or symbols.

Information Literacy - is the ability to recognize when information is needed, and locate,
evaluate and communicate information in its various formats.

Technology Literacy - is the ability of an individual, either working independently or with


others, to responsibly, appropriately, and effectively use technological tools. Using these
tools, an individual can access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicate
information.

Media and Information Literacy - According to UNESCO’s most used definition, MIL is
defined as “a set of competencies that empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand,
evaluate and use, to create as well as share information and media content in all formats,
using various tools, in a critical, ethical and effective way, in order to participate and engage
in personal, professional and societal activities”

Other definition of MIL:


Refers to essential skills and competencies that allow individuals to engage with media and
other information providers effectively, as well as develop critical thinking and life-long
learning skills to socialize and become active citizens

The ultimate goal of MIL is to empower people to exercise their universal rights and
fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of opinion and expression, taking advantage of
emerging opportunities in the most effective, inclusive, ethical and efficient manner for the
benefit of all individuals.

LET US REMEMBER

➢ Media and Information Literacy is not ICT – centered, or a course that teaches how to use
digital technology. MIL is much more than technology use.
➢ MIL is a skill beyond completing classroom requirements. It is a skill that we use in everyday
life.
➢ MIL is not a production course, however, production is part of the MIL process. Producing
and sharing media content alone does not equate to MIL.
➢ MIL is not just about content. It is also a process that requires skills and competencies.
➢ MIL is not about memorizing facts but being skeptical of media content and information and
having the ability to discern information disorders. These are crucial in making the right
decision.
