Introduction

LESSON 1 Water, the Aqueous Environment

Activity Draw and label the structure of the plasma membrane inside the box
below. Answer the following questions in the analysis.

Analysis

Application 1.) Make a 3D model clay of a plasma membrane. Provide clear

photographs of your work from different angles. A rubric is
attached on the last page of this module.
2.) Describe the lipid bilayer structure of the plasma membrane.
3.) Discuss the nature of the membrane.
4.) Discuss and briefly describe the chemical composition of the
membrane. How membrane proteins are arranged in the lipid
bilayer?

LESSON 2 Biomolecules and their Properties

Activity In this activity, you will take note of the components of your meal menu
for a series of three meals. Indicate which of the component’s sources
of any of the four biomolecules are.

Biomolecules Meal Components

Breakfast Lunch Supper
Carbohydrate Rice Potato Banana
s
Protein Milk Egg Chicken
Lipids Butter Avocado Corn
Nucleic acid Squid Fish Beans
Analysis 1.) Do you think each of your meal menu contains the four
biomolecules? – No since most of the time I only consume fatty
foods because I love fast food.
2.) Which of the components of your meal provide you energy? –
Rice because it is rich with carbohydrates which provides with
most energy.
3.) Which of the components participates in tissue repair and
growth? – Protein because it is responsible for helping or
developing our damaged or old tissues which then contributes to
growth.

4.) Which of the components provide you with fats? Are fats safe for
consumption? – Lipids provide us fats and is safe when
consumed in small portions only.

Application 1.) Which if the biomolecules chiefly provide you with energy? –
Fats because they have more energy than carbohydrates. This
is because fats are long term storage of energy.
2.) Which of the biomolecules are involved in the transmission of
genes from one generation to another generation? – Nucleic
acid because example of it is DNA and it is the molecule that
holds genetic information.
3.) Do proteins provide energy? Explain. – Yes of course because it
repairs and develop the tissues. However, it takes longer than
carbohydrates to break down that’s why it can only provide small
energy.
4.) How does each biomolecules differ from one another? –
Carbohydrates differ from other biomolecules since it is able to
do many things. Other than provide energy, it also helps the
structure and protection of the cell or body. As for proteins, they
differ because of their amino acid content. For lipids, It is
different because they are insoluble in water and for Nucleic
acid, It is because of it’s contains genetic information.
5.) How does DNA molecule differ from RNA molecule? – DNA is
double helix while RNA is single strand. DNA also has
deoxyribose sugar and RNA has ribose sugar.
