Part 2 (5 marks)

Assume that you have already completed a 2-year international assignment

working for Deloitte as a Financial Consultant in the UK.

By using the relocation transition curve, you need to make your own
analysis to explain how you adapted to the new living and working
environment.

SOLUTION

Studying and worrking aboard is a dream not only of anyone. I was also
fortunate to have worked for Deloitte as Financial Consultant in the UK for 2
years. During 2 years, there were difficulties, joys, sorrows, countless different
experiences. Below are my feelings and experiences through each stage.

First of all is unreality. In October, 2018, I received a notice that I was

going to the UK to worked at Deloitte for 2 years. I felt it like a dream. This is
the job I have been looking forward to so much. For me, Deloitte is not simply a
world leading provider of auditing but it is also like a second home. That makes
me really excited and happy. Besides, coming to the UK to work will help me
learn and improve my foreign language skills. Challenge yourself, learn and
hone your knowledge. I can acquiring cultural quintessence from British
colleagues. It is possible to become a successful Financial Consultant, bringing
a lot of profit to the company.

The second thing I want to share is fantasia. About 2 months before I

coming to the UK (November, 2018), I was really excited. I have prepared
myself with all the necessary things. I am a person who can adapt well in both
living environment and working environments. I am confident that I can get
used to the lifestyle and time living here. In terms of living environment, UK is
a completely new country for me. But with good adaptability, I am always
ready and confident when coming to the UK to experience and work. With the
Page 7
BSA 1055

living environment is collectivism, Multiple Ethnicities– Multiple Cultures. I

am fully confident that I can easily be friendly and learn from the UK. With the
living environment is collectivism, Multiple Ethnicities– Multiple Cultures. I
am fully confident that I can easily be friendly and learn from the UK. In
Vietnam, I have worked as a financial consultant for LG corporation for 2 years.
Therefore, I think I have enough knowledge to be able to work in the UK. It will
not be too difficult for me to adapt to this new working environment. My
foreign language skills and time management skills are quite good, so
communication and meeting colleagues at the company are not difficult. So this
time prepare to coming UK, I feel very excited.

The third is interest. Before coming to the UK for 6 weeks (November,

2018), I have researched and consulted many books on culture in the UK and I
am very shocked about its difference compared to Vietnam. Firstly is the way to
express personal opinion. UK value frankless.Vietnamese people appreciate
ingenuity and softness. Secondly is style, life style. Westerners appreciate the
ego, personal capacity, individuality... so their lifestyle is more in favor of an
independent and individual lifestyle. Vietnamese people appreciate the self,
people must always know how to integrate with the surrounding environment to
create harmony. Vietnamese people always live in a community, love and care
for each other, so the Vietnamese way of life is much more emotional than in
the West. Next is talking. In the UK, Americans when talking are usually not
afraid to praise themselves and often lift themselves up and that shows their
confidence. In Vietnam, when talking is usually modest, lower yourself a little
to show humility. Finallly is timer. In the UK, punctuality is a highly respected
element of appointments in the West. Accuracy and punctuality are extremely
important to Westerners. People don't have to come early to show respect, but
they won't be late, because they perceive it as impolite. About Vietnam, we can
move the appointment a little bit and sometimes it's not a big deal. Therefore, in

Page 8
BSA 1055

Vietnam, there is a new noun "rubber hour". After finding out, I was feeling
very nervous.

The fouth is acceptance of reality. In February, 2019, when I lived and

worked in the UK for 1 months, I gradually accepted the reality. I gave up my
past gratifications and realized that I was a stranger in a foreign land. After 1
months in the UK, I realized that the UK is so different from Vietnam.
Changing the time zone makes me feel tired and pressured, unable to focus on
work. About colleagues, everyone is strange and difficult to integrate. They do
not even show me any respect just because I am Asian. Their culture
emphasizes ego and independent and self-directed working style. In Vietnam,
we are used to colleagues helping and sharing work. Besides, British culture is
too different. Even riding in the left lane is an unforgettable experience for me.
My living environment in the UK also changed dramatically. The climate in the
UK is also quite harsh for me. I am not used to traveling and am stuck in the
snow. I am not used to the food here. They remind me of home cooked meals.
After coming to the UK for 1 months, I started to feel homesick, missing my
family, friends and colleagues in Vietnam. The familiar culture in Vietnam also
reminds me of many unforgettable memories.

Next is experimentation. After 6 months (October, 2019), I started

experimentation and testing of new approaches. Practice phase, trying to do
things differently. I try to forget the loneliness and homesickness. I focus
completely on work. I dedicate all my time for work to forget everything that is
not good behind. My job requires a lot of concentration. So when I focus on
work, it makes me feel less lonely. Outside of work, I also work hard to practice
English and personal development skills such as independent working skills, or
management skills. I try to prove to everyone that I can do it. Gradually I got
used to their culture. I can work independently and confidently present before
every meeting. Colleagues also gradually become more sociable. We can invite

Page 9
BSA 1055

each other to lunch at the company's lunch. After work, I take time for myself. I
call my family often to forget the nostalgia. Take the time to cook own favorite
Vietnamese dishes. On weekends I also spend time to experience and explore.
After that I was able to adjust to life in the UK, to working at Deloiite UK and
their culture.

Then is search for meaning. In February, 2020, I started search for

meaning. And I understand why I am success. I think it is quite a challenge for
me to integrate into the British culture and colleagues. I think the fact that I can
fit in is due to my research, research and proving myself in my work. Besides, I
also researched their culture very deeply. I understood their culture well after
many months of working. Their work culture and living culture are both very
interesting. I realized that, if we want to integrate into a new community, we
need to understand their culture. We have to change to fit their culture. They are
under no obligation to change with us. Changing habits and culture is quite
difficult. But to integrate into a new community it is necessary.

Finally is integration. In December 2020, my last month in the UK as a

Financial Consultant for Deloiite. I became completely confident with
integrating with them. After 2 years, I can finally integrate of new skills and
behavior. Acceptance of the new environment. Within 2 years I always try to
change myself, habits and culture to be able to adapt to the new environment.
Besides, I also learned many things from them. Cultivate many new skills and
improve foreign language skills. Therefore, I think that anyone who moves to a
new environment needs to change to adapt and integrate. From there we can
easily integrate.

To sum up, its was really a very enjoyable experience. I think it’s a
beautiful and unforgettable part of my life. It has helped me grow up a lot and
have the success I am today.
